    Cooling Capacity Test for MIL-101(Cr)/CaCl2 for Adsorption Refrigeration System

    An MIL-101(Cr) powder material was successfully prepared using the hydrothermal synthesis method, and then the original MIL-101(Cr) was combined with different mass fractions of CaCl2 using the immersion method to obtain a MIL-101(Cr)/CaCl2 composite material. The physical properties of the adsorbent were determined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), an N2 adsorption desorption isotherm test, and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The water vapor adsorption performance of the metal-organic frameworks MOFs was tested with a gravimetric water vapor adsorption instrument to analyze its water vapor adsorption mechanism. Based on the SIMULINK platform in the MATLAB software, a simulation model of the coefficient of performance (COP) and cooling capacity of the adsorption refrigeration system was established, and the variation trends of the COP and cooling capacity of the adsorption refrigeration system under different evaporation/condensation/adsorption/desorption temperatures was theoretically studied. MIL101-(Cr)/CaCl2-20% was selected as the adsorption material in the adsorption refrigeration system through the physical characterization of composite materials with different CaCl2 concentrations by means of adsorption water vapor test experiments. A closed adsorption system performance test device was built based on the liquid level method. The cooling power per unit and adsorbent mass (COP and SCP) of the system were tested at different evaporation temperatures (288 K/293 K/298 K); the adsorption temperature was 298 K, the condensation temperature was 308 K, and the desorption temperature was 353 K. The experimental results showed that COP and SCP increased with the increase in the evaporation temperature. When the evaporation temperature was 298 K, the level of COP was 0.172, and the level of SCP was 136.9 W/kg. The COP and SCP of the system were tested at different adsorption temperatures (293 K/298 K/303 K); the evaporation temperature was 288 K, the condensation temperature was 308 K, and the desorption temperature was 353 K. The experimental results showed that the levels of COP and SCP decreased with the increase in the adsorption temperature. When the adsorption temperature was 293 K, the level of COP was 0.18, and the level of SCP was 142.4 W/kg

    FANCC localizes with UNC5A at neurite outgrowth and promotes neuritogenesis

    Abstract Objective The Uncoordinated 5A (UNC5A) protein is part of a family of receptors that play roles in axonal pathfinding and cell migration. We previously showed that the Fanconi anemia C protein (FANCC) interacts with UNC5A and delays UNC5A-mediated apoptosis. FANCC is a predominantly cytoplasmic protein that has multiple functions including DNA damage signaling, oxygen radical metabolism, signal transduction, transcriptional regulation and apoptosis. Given the direct interaction between FANCC and UNC5A and that FANCC interferes with UNC5A-mediated apoptosis, we explored the possibility that FANCC might play a role in axonal-like growth processes. Results Here we show that FANCC and UNC5A are localized to regions of neurite outgrowth during neuronal cell differentiation. We also show that absence of FANCC is required for neurite outgrowth. In addition, FANCC seems required for UNC5A expression. Results from this study combined with our previous report suggest that FANCC plays a role in tissue development through the regulation of UNC5A-mediated functions

    Robust Two-Dimensional Spatial-Variant Map-Drift Algorithm for UAV SAR Autofocusing

    Autofocus has attracted wide attention for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, because autofocus process is crucial and difficult when the phase error is spatially dependent on both range and azimuth directions. In this paper, a novel two-dimensional spatial-variant map-drift algorithm (2D-SVMDA) is developed to provide robust autofocusing performance for UAV SAR imagery. This proposed algorithm combines two enhanced map-drift kernels. On the one hand, based on the azimuth-dependent phase correction, a novel azimuth-variant map-drift algorithm (AVMDA) is established to model the residual phase error as a linear function in the azimuth direction. Then the model coefficients are efficiently estimated by a quadratic Newton optimization with modified maximum cross-correlation. On the other hand, by concatenating the existing range-dependent map-drift algorithm (RDMDA) and the proposed AVMDA in this paper, a phase autofocus procedure of 2D-SVMDA is finally established. The proposed 2D-SVMDA can handle spatial-variance problems induced by strong phase errors. Simulated and real measured data are employed to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm compensates both the range- and azimuth-variant phase errors effectively

    Advances in understanding the changes of tropical rainfall annual cycle: a review

    Aided by progress in the theoretical understanding, new knowledge on tropical rainfall annual cycle changes under global warming background has been advanced in the past decade. In this review, we focus on recent advances in understanding the changes of tropical rainfall annual cycle, including its four distinct features: amplitude, pattern shift, phase and wet/dry season length changes. In a warming climate, the amplitude of tropical rainfall annual cycle is enhanced, more evidently over ocean, while the phase of tropical rainfall annual cycle is delayed, mainly over land. The former is explained by the wet-get-wetter mechanism and the latter is explained by the enhanced effective atmospheric heat capacity and increased convective barrier. The phase delay over land has already emerged in the past four decades. The pattern shift under warming is marked by two features: equatorward shift of the inter-tropical convergence zone throughout the year and the land-to-ocean precipitation shift in the rainy season. The former is explained by the upped-ante mechanism and/or related to the enhanced equatorial warming in a warmer world. The latter is suggested to be caused by the opposite land and ocean surface temperature annual cycle changes in the tropics. Over tropical rainforest regions such as Amazon and Congo Basin, the dry season has lengthened in the recent decades, but the fundamental reason is still unclear. Despite the notable progress of the last decade, many gaps remain in understanding the mechanism, quantifying and attributing the emergence, narrowing the inter-model uncertainty, and evaluating the impact of tropical rainfall annual cycle changes, motivating future work guided by some directions proposed in this review

    Neuronal apoptosis and synaptic density in the dentate gyrus of ischemic rats' response to chronic mild stress and the effects of Notch signaling.

    Our previous research highlighted an inconsistency with Notch1 signaling-related compensatory neurogenesis after chronic mild stress (CMS) in rodents suffering from cerebral ischemia, which continue to display post-stroke depressive symptoms. Here, we hypothesize that CMS aggrandized ischemia-related apoptosis injury and worsened synaptic integrity via gamma secretase-meditated Notch1 signaling. Adult rats were exposed to a CMS paradigm after left middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Open-field and sucrose consumption testing were employed to assess depression-like behavior. Gene expression of pro-apoptotic Bax, anti-apoptotic Bcl-2, and synaptic density-related synaptophysin were measured by western blotting and real-time PCR on Day 28 after MCAO surgery. CMS induced depressive behaviors in ischemic rats, which was accompanied by an elevation in Bax/bcl-2 ratio, TUNEL staining in neurons and reduced synaptophysin expression in the dentate gyrus. These collective effects were reversed by the gamma-secretase inhibitor DAPT (N-[N-(3,5-difluorophenacetyl-L-alanyl)]-S-phenyl-glycine t-butyl ester). We found that post-stroke stressors made neurons in the dentate gyrus vulnerable to apoptosis, which supports a putative role for Notch signaling in neural integrity, potentially in newborn cells' synaptic deficit with regard to preexisting cells. These findings suggest that post-stroke depression therapeutically benefits from blocking gamma secretase mediated Notch signaling, and whether this signaling pathway could be a therapeutic target needs to be further investigated

    The Fanconi anemia group C protein (FANCC) is one of the several proteins that comprise the Fanconi anemia (FA) network involved in genomic surveillance. FANCC is mainly cytoplasmic and has many functions, including apoptosis suppression through caspase-mediated proteolytic processing. Here, we examined the role of FANCC proteolytic fragments by identifying their binding partners. We performed a yeast two-hybrid screen with caspase-mediated FANCC cleavage products and identified the dependence receptor uncoordinated-5A (UNC5A) protein. Here, we show that FANCC physically interacts with UNC5A, a pro-apoptotic dependence receptor. FANCC interaction occurs through the UNC5A intracellular domain, specifically via its death domain. FANCC modulates cell sensitivity to UNC5A-mediated apoptosis; we observed reduced UNC5A-mediated apoptosis in the presence of FANCC and increased apoptosis in FANCC-depleted cells. Our results show that FANCC interferes with UNC5A's functions in apoptosis and suggest that FANCC may participate in developmental processes through association with the dependence receptor UNC5A

    Complex interactive multimodal intervention to improve personalized stress management among healthcare workers in China: A knowledge translation protocol

    Objectives Numerous stress management interventions have been implemented in the workplace, but few are adapted to the healthcare setting. Due to the nature of their jobs, healthcare workers (HCWs) may find it difficult to adopt recommended stress management strategies. We present the protocol for a 12-week personalized stress management intervention among HCWs to change their behavior as well as improve physiological/psychological outcomes. Methods It is a pragmatic quasi-experimental study involving stressed HCWs from two general hospitals in Wuhan, China. The intervention group will receive a complex interactive multimodal intervention, including advanced education via mobile connection, participation in a web-based social network, tailored feedback, and the support of a nurse coach, while the control group will engage in self-guided stress management. Results The primary outcome is centered on behavioral measures, namely improvements in stress management practice frequency after a 12-week intervention. The secondary outcomes are the changes in stress-related physiological indices (i.e. high frequency variability and normalized unit assessed by Holter) and psychological indicators (scores on the Perceived Stress Scale and Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale) following 12 weeks of treatment. Conclusion The knowledge translation intervention builds on a body of work defining the role of individualized instruction and feedback intervention, as well as group intervention through WeChat social network and personalized coaching. We believe this novel intervention will help HCWs promote their stress management awareness and skills, and ultimately benefit their long-term health.     Brown Sequard syndrome in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome following minor trauma: a case report and literature review

    Abstract Background There are some cases of Klippel-Feil syndrome with spinal cord injury in clinical work. However, there is no literature report on Brown-Sequard syndrome after trauma. We report a case of Brown-Sequard syndrome following minor trauma in a patient with KFS type III. Her Brown-Sequard syndrome is caused by Klippel-Feil syndrome. Case presentation We found a 38-year-old female patient with KFS in our clinical work. She was unconscious on the spot following a minor traumatic episode. After treatment, her whole body was numb and limb activity was limited. Half an hour later, she felt numb and weak in the right limb and weak in the left limb. She had no previous hypertension, diabetes, or coronary heart disease. After one-month treatment of medication, hyperbaric oxygen, rehabilitation, and acupuncture in our hospital, her muscle strength partially recovered, but the treatment effect was still not satisfactory. Then, she underwent surgical treatment and postoperative comprehensive treatment, and rehabilitation training. She was able to take care of herself with assistance, and her condition improved from grade B to grade D according to the ASIA (ASIA Impairment Scale) classification. Conclusion KFS, also known as short neck deformity, is a kind of congenital deformity characterized by impaired formation and faulty segmentation of the cervical spine, often associated with abnormalities of other organs. The cervical deformity in patients with KFS can alter the overall mechanical activity of the spine, as well as the compensatory properties of the spine for decelerating and rotatory forces, thus increasing the chance of spinal cord injury (SCI) following trauma. Many mechanisms can make patients more susceptible to injury. Increased range of motion of the segment adjacent to the fused vertebral body may lead to slippage of the adjacent vertebral body and altered disc stress, as well as cervical instability. SCI can result in complete or incomplete impairment of motor, sensory and autonomic nervous functions below the level of lesion. This woman presented with symptoms of BSS, a rare neurological disorder with incomplete SCI. Judging from the woman’s symptoms, we concluded that previously she had KFS, which resulted in SCI without fracture and dislocation following minor trauma, with partial BSS. After the comprehensive treatment of surgery, hyperbaric oxygen, rehabilitation therapy, and neurotrophic drugs, two years later, we found her symptoms significantly improved, with ASIA Impairment Scale from grade B to grade D, and her ability to perform activities of daily living with aids
