2S hyperfine structure of atomic deuterium
We have measured the frequency splitting between the and hyperfine sublevels in atomic deuterium by an optical differential
method based on two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy on a cold atomic beam. The
result Hz is the most precise value for
this interval to date. In comparison to the previous radio-frequency
measurement we have improved the accuracy by the factor of three.
The specific combination of hyperfine frequency intervals for metastable- and
ground states in deuterium atom derived from our measurement is in a good agreement with
calculated from quantum-electrodynamics theory.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Study of hyperfine structure in simple atoms and precision tests of the bound state QED
We consider the most accurate tests of bound state QED, precision theory of
simple atoms, related to the hyperfine splitting in light hydrogen-like atoms.
We discuss the HFS interval of the 1s state in muonium and positronium and of
the 2s state in hydrogen, deuterium and helium-3 ion. We summarize their QED
theory and pay attention to involved effects of strong interactions. We also
consider recent optical measurements of the 2s HFS interval in hydrogen and
deuterium.Comment: presented at The International Workshop "e+e- collisions from phi to

Photoionization Broadening of the 1S-2S Transition in a Beam of Atomic Hydrogen
We consider the excitation dynamics of the two-photon \sts transition in a
beam of atomic hydrogen by 243 nm laser radiation. Specifically, we study the
impact of ionization damping on the transition line shape, caused by the
possibility of ionization of the 2S level by the same laser field. Using a
Monte-Carlo simulation, we calculate the line shape of the \sts transition for
the experimental geometry used in the two latest absolute frequency
measurements (M. Niering {\it et al.}, PRL 84, 5496 (2000) and M. Fischer {\it
et al.}, PRL 92, 230802 (2004)). The calculated line shift and line width are
in excellent agreement with the experimentally observed values. From this
comparison we can verify the values of the dynamic Stark shift coefficient for
the \sts transition for the first time on a level of 15%. We show that the
ionization modifies the velocity distribution of the metastable atoms, the line
shape of the \sts transition, and has an influence on the derivation of its
absolute frequency.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Two-photon excitation dynamics in bound two-body Coulomb systems including ac Stark shift and ionization
One of the dominant systematic effects that shift resonance lines in high-precision measurements of twophoton transitions is the dynamic (ac) Stark shift. For suitable laser frequencies, the ac Stark shift acquires an imaginary part which corresponds to the rate of resonant one-photon ionization of electrons into a continuum state. At the current level of spectroscopic accuracy, the underlying time-dependent quantum dynamics governing the atomic two-photon excitation process must be well understood, and related considerations are the subject of the present paper. In order to illustrate the basic mechanisms in the transient regime, we investigate an analytically solvable model scenario for the population dynamics in the density matrix formalism and describe in detail how to generalize the corresponding equations of motion for individual experimental use. We also calculate the dynamic Stark shift for two-photon S-S and S-D transitions in bound two-body Coulomb systems and the corresponding two-photon transition matrix elements. In particular, we investigate transitions for which the 1S ground state or alternatively the metastable 2S state acts as the lower-energy state, and for which states with n </= 20 represent the upper states. Relativistic and radiative corrections to the excitation dynamics, and the corresponding limitations to the accuracy of the measurements, are briefly discussed. Our considerations suggest the general feasibility of a detection mechanism, offering high quantum efficiency, based on two-step three-photon resonant ionization spectroscopy, for large classes of experimentally relevant two-photon transitions in two-body Coulomb systems.Peer reviewedPhysic
Induction of Plasmodium falciparum-Specific CD4+ T Cells and Memory B Cells in Gabonese Children Vaccinated with RTS,S/AS01E and RTS,S/AS02D
The recombinant circumsporozoite protein (CS) based vaccine, RTS,S, confers protection against Plasmodium falciparum infection in controlled challenge trials and in field studies. The RTS,S recombinant antigen has been formulated with two adjuvant systems, AS01 and AS02, which have both been shown to induce strong specific antibody responses and CD4 T cell responses in adults. As infants and young children are particularly susceptible to malaria infection and constitute the main target population for a malaria vaccine, we have evaluated the induction of adaptive immune responses in young children living in malaria endemic regions following vaccination with RTS,S/AS01(E) and RTS,S/AS02(D). Our data show that a CS-specific memory B cell response is induced one month after the second and third vaccine dose and that CS-specific antibodies and memory B cells persist up to 12 months after the last vaccine injection. Both formulations also induced low but significant amounts of CS-specific IL-2(+) CD4(+) T cells one month after the second and third vaccine dose, upon short-term in vitro stimulation of whole blood cells with peptides covering the entire CS derived sequence in RTS,S. These results provide evidence that both RTS,S/AS01(E) and RTS,S/AS02(D) induced adaptive immune responses including antibodies, circulating memory B cells and CD4(+) T cells directed against P. falciparum CS protein.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00307021
