Long Range Forces from Two Neutrino Exchange Revisited

The exchange of two massless neutrinos gives rise to a long range force which couples to weakly charged matter. As has been noted previously in the literature, the potential for this force is \VN \propto G_{F}^2 / r^5 with monopole-monople, spin-spin and more complicated interactions. Unfortunately, this is far too small to be observed in present day experiments. We calculate \VN explicitly in the electroweak theory, and show that under very general assumptions forces arising from the exchange of two massless fermions can at best yield 1/r51 / r^5 potentials.Comment: 5 pages + 1 figure (not included), UFIFT-HEP-92-28/HUTP-92-A04

The curious case of large-N expansions on a (pseudo)sphere

We elucidate the large-N dynamics of one-dimensional sigma models with spherical and hyperbolic target spaces and find a duality between the Lagrange multiplier and the angular momentum. In the hyperbolic model we propose a new class of operators based on the irreducible representations of hyperbolic space. We also uncover unexpected zero modes which lead to the double scaling of the 1/N expansion and explore these modes using Gelfand-Dikiy equations.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure

A survey of secondary school science teachers' attitudes on the responsibility of scientists to society.

Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityThe purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes of science teachers in secondary school on matters relating to the responsibility of scientists to society. Science teachers in grades 9-12, or 7-12 where combined high schools existed, were surveyed. The justification for this study partially rests on the contention that the teacher's attitudes or absence of attitudes are communicated to the pupil and influence him to varying degrees. Since it was shown - in the review of literature - that much thought is being and has been given , and much controversy is raging, regarding the role of the scientist in society and his responsibilities to that society; the attitudes of the nation's science teachers - who it is believed are influencing the future citizens very much in this respect - are of concern. The other foundation that this justification rests on is the desire to know what these representative (see limitations) teachers think on this vital subject. Because of this alone the study is justified.[TRUNCATED
