Biological Earth observation with animal sensors

    Get PDF
Space-based tracking technology using low-cost miniature tags is now delivering data on fine-scale animal movement at near-global scale. Linked with remotely sensed environmental data, this offers a biological lens on habitat integrity and connectivity for conservation and human health; a global network of animal sentinels of environmen-tal change

THE ROLE OF THE HYDROLOGICAL MODE OF THE SELENGA DELTA IN THE DYNAMICS OF THE DUCKS POPULATION

The multi-year observations on the ecology of multiplications of 11 species of ducks have been performed on the stationary areas. The main factors of the population dynamics the mechanisms and the force of its effect at the different level of water have been revealed. Determined has been the range of the Baikal level, being the optimum one for the ducks multiplication. The new approaches to the evaluation and prognosing of its number have been offered, the ecological monitoring of the Selenga delta has been realized. The number of materials of the investigation has been introduced in the Kabansky region community of hunters and in the Irkutsk region Committee by the Protection of the Ambient MediumAvailable from VNTIC / VNTIC - Scientific & Technical Information Centre of RussiaSIGLERURussian Federatio

Autumn Migration of Eagles in the South Baikal Migratory Pass: Dynamics for 30 Years

Regular observation on autumn migration of raptors in the South Baikal migratory pass (SBMP) began in the late 1980s, and in the late 1990s, full-season counts began (25 August – 10–20 October). During autumn, 5722–14639 individuals of soaring raptors have been recorded. They prefer not to cross Lake Baikal over the water, but instead flying in thermals along the western bank of Baikal; significant numbers of eagles from the southern part of Irkutsk Region pass through this “bottleneck” (Alexeyenko, Fefelov, 2009). Our stationary censuses cover more than 3/4 of the width of this bottleneck
