A COMPUTER CLUSTER SYSTEM FOR PSEUDO-PARALLEL EXECUTION OF GEANT4 SERIAL APPLICATION

Simulation of the interactions between particles and matter in studies for developing X-rays detectors generally requires very long calculation times (up to several days or weeks). These times are often a serious limitation for the success of the simulations and for the accuracy of the simulated models. One of the tools used by the scientific community to perform these simulations is Geant4 (Geometry And Tracking) [2, 3]. On the best of experience in the design of the AVES cluster computing system, Federici et al. [1], the IAPS (Istituto di Astrofisica e Planetologia Spaziali INAF) laboratories were able to develop a cluster computer system dedicated to Geant 4. The Cluster is easy to use and easily expandable, and thanks to the design criteria adopted it achieves an excellent compromise between performance and cost. The management software developed for the Cluster splits the single instance of simulation on the cores available, allowing the use of software written for serial computation to reach a computing speed similar to that obtainable from a native parallel software. The simulations carried out on the Cluster showed an increase in execution time by a factor of 20 to 60 compared to the times obtained with the use of a single PC of medium quality

an automatic system based on open source solutions to create virtual machines of running linux systems

The goal of this work is to realize a system to allow the automatic cloning of active physical servers (at work and configured) into virtual platforms. This approach is very useful in cases where computer services are provided by server technologically outdated and therefore hard to be upgraded. Moreover, thanks to the intrinsic characteristics of High Reliability of systems based on virtual machines, in case of failure is possible an effective and fast recovery of the working environment ensuring uninterrupted operation

HAVmS: Highly Available Virtual Machine Computer System Fault Tolerant with Automatic Failback and Close to Zero Downtime

    Get PDF
In scientic computing, systems often manage computations that require continuous acquisition of of satellite data and the management of large databases, as well as the execution of analysis software and simulation models (e.g. Monte Carlo or molecular dynamics cell simulations) which may require several weeks of continuous run. These systems, consequently, should ensure the continuity of operation even in case of serious faults. HAVmS (High Availability Virtual machine System) is a highly available, "fault tolerant" system with zero downtime in case of fault. It is based on the use of Virtual Machines and implemented by two servers with similar characteristics. HAVmS, thanks to the developed software solutions, is unique in its kind since it automatically failbacks once faults have been fixed. The system has been designed to be used both with professional or inexpensive hardware and supports the simultaneous execution of multiple services such as: web, mail, computing and administrative services, uninterrupted computing, data base management. Finally the system is cost effective adopting exclusively open source solutions, is easily manageable and for general use

Stimulatory effect of Eucalyptus essential oil on innate cell-mediated immune response

Besides few data concerning the antiseptic properties against a range of microbial agents and the anti-inflammatory potential both in vitro and in vivo, little is known about the influence of Eucalyptus oil (EO) extract on the monocytic/macrophagic system, one of the primary cellular effectors of the immune response against pathogen attacks. The activities of this natural extract have mainly been recognized through clinical experience, but there have been relatively little scientific studies on its biological actions. Here we investigated whether EO extract is able to affect the phagocytic ability of human monocyte derived macrophages (MDMs) in vitro and of rat peripheral blood monocytes/granulocytes in vivo in absence or in presence of immuno-suppression induced by the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)

Sub-luminous X-ray Bursters Unveiled with INTEGRAL

In 2005 March 22nd, the INTEGRAL satellite caught a type-I X-ray burst from the unidentified source XMMU J174716.1-281048, serendipitously discovered with XMM-Newton in 2003. Based on the type-I X-ray burst properties, we derived the distance of the object and suggested that the system is undergoing a prolonged accretion episode of many years. We present new data from a Swift/XRT campaign which strengthen this suggestion. AX J1754.2-2754 was an unclassified source reported in the ASCA catalogue of the Galactic Centre survey. INTEGRAL observed a type-I burst from it in 2005, April 16th. Recently, a Swift ToO allowed us to refine the source position and establish its persistent nature.Comment: To be published in AIP Proceedings - Conference 'A Population Explosion: The Nature and Evolution of X-ray Binaries in Diverse Environments', 28 Oct - 2 Nov, St. Petersburg Beach, F
