From brawn to brains: how immigration works for America
Immigrants help fuel the U.S. economy, representing about one in every six workers. Because of accelerated immigration and slowing U.S. population growth, foreign-born workers accounted for almost half of labor force growth over the past 15 years. Public attention has forcused mainly on the large number of low-skilled immigrant workers, but the number of high-skilled immigrants actually grew faster during the period.Immigrants ; Labor supply - United States ; Education - Economic aspects ; Emigration and immigration

Stochastic epidemics in growing populations
Consider a uniformly mixing population which grows as a super-critical linear
birth and death process. At some time an infectious disease (of SIR or SEIR
type) is introduced by one individual being infected from outside. It is shown
that three different scenarios may occur: 1) an epidemic never takes off, 2) an
epidemic gets going and grows but at a slower rate than the community thus
still being negligible in terms of population fractions, or 3) an epidemic
takes off and grows quicker than the community eventually leading to an endemic
equilibrium. Depending on the parameter values, either scenario 1 is the only
possibility, both scenario 1 and 2 are possible, or scenario 1 and 3 are
possible.Comment: 11 page

Multifrequency broadband polarized horn antenna
A corrugated conical horn antenna is simultaneously fed a multiplicity of signals, two for each of five frequencies, with each of a pair of signals fed in each of two orthogonal planes for excitation of a desired spherical hybrid mode. The lowest frequency is fed into the horn through orthogonal pairs of colinear slots, each pair being fed by coaxial tee power dividers. Other signals are fed through a circular waveguide connected to the vertex. The highest frequency signals are fed through orthogonal ports near the far end of the circular waveguide. The intermediate frequency signals are fed through orthogonal ports spaced along the waveguide. Filtering is incorporated for each to maintain isolation and low insertion loss
Systematic review of psychological approaches to the management of neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia
Objective: The authors systematically reviewed the literature on psychological approaches to treating the neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia.Method: Reports of studies that examined effects of any therapy derived from a psychological approach that satisfied prespecified criteria were reviewed. Data were extracted, the quality of each study was rated, and an overall rating was given to each study by using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine criteria. Results: A total of 1,632 studies were identified, and 162 satisfied the inclusion criteria for the review. Specific types of psychoeducation for caregivers about managing neuropsychiatric symptoms were effective treatments whose benefits lasted for months, but other caregiver interventions were not. Behavioral management techniques that are centered on individual patients' behavior or on caregiver behavior had similar benefits, as did cognitive stimulation. Music therapy and Snoezelen, and possibly sensory stimulation, were useful during the treatment session but had no longer-term effects; interventions that changed the visual environment looked promising, but more research is needed. Conclusions: Only behavior management therapies, specific types of caregiver and residential care staff education, and possibly cognitive stimulation appear to have lasting effectiveness for the management of dementia-associated neuropsychiatric symptoms. Lack of evidence regarding other therapies is not evidence of lack of efficacy. Conclusions are limited because of the paucity of high-quality research ( only nine level-1 studies were identified). More high-quality investigation is needed
