Cluster size entropy in the Axelrod model of social influence: small-world networks and mass media
We study the Axelrod's cultural adaptation model using the concept of cluster
size entropy, that gives information on the variability of the cultural
cluster size present in the system. Using networks of different topologies,
from regular to random, we find that the critical point of the well-known
nonequilibrium monocultural-multicultural (order-disorder) transition of the
Axelrod model is unambiguously given by the maximum of the
distributions. The width of the cluster entropy distributions can be used to
qualitatively determine whether the transition is first- or second-order. By
scaling the cluster entropy distributions we were able to obtain a relationship
between the critical cultural trait and the number of cultural
features in regular networks. We also analyze the effect of the mass media
(external field) on social systems within the Axelrod model in a square
network. We find a new partially ordered phase whose largest cultural cluster
is not aligned with the external field, in contrast with a recent suggestion
that this type of phase cannot be formed in regular networks. We draw a new
phase diagram for the Axelrod model in regular networks.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
W- and Z-boson production with a massive bottom-quark pair at the Large Hadron Collider
We present total and differential cross sections for W b anti-b and Z b
anti-b production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with a center-of-mass
energy of 14 TeV, including Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections and
full bottom-quark mass effects. We also provide numerical results obtained with
a center-of-mass energy of 10 TeV. We study the scale uncertainty of the total
cross sections due to the residual renormalization- and factorization-scale
dependence of the truncated perturbative series. While in the case of Z b
anti-b production the scale uncertainty of the total cross section is reduced
by NLO QCD corrections, the W b anti-b production process at NLO in QCD still
suffers from large scale uncertainties, in particular in the inclusive case. We
also perform a detailed comparison with a calculation that considers massless
bottom quarks, as implemented in the Monte Carlo program MCFM. The effects of a
non-zero bottom-quark mass (m_b) cannot be neglected in phase-space regions
where the relevant kinematic observable, such as the transverse momentum of the
bottom quarks or the invariant mass of the bottom-quark pair, are of the order
of m_b. The effects on the total production cross sections are usually smaller
than the residual scale uncertainty at NLO in QCD.Comment: 24 pages, 24 postscript figures, added one reference, a few typos

Multi-jet cross sections at NLO with BlackHat and Sherpa
In this talk, we report on a recent next-to-leading order QCD calculation of
the production of a W boson in association with three jets at hadron colliders.
The computation is performed by combining two programs, BlackHat for the
computation of the virtual one-loop matrix elements and Sherpa for the real

High multiplicity W+jets predictions at NLO
In these proceedings we present results from a recent calculation for the
production of a W boson in conjunction with five jets at next-to-leading order
in perturbative QCD. We also use results at lower multiplicities to extrapolate

The BlackHat Library for One-Loop Amplitudes
We present recent next-to-leading order (NLO) results in perturbative QCD
obtained using the BlackHat software library. We discuss the use of n-tuples to
separate the lengthy matrix-element computations from the analysis process. The
use of n-tuples allows many analyses to be carried out on the same phase-space
samples, and also allows experimenters to conduct their own analyses using the

Next-to-Leading Order Jet Physics with BlackHat
We present several results obtained using the BlackHat next-to-leading order
QCD program library, in conjunction with SHERPA. In particular, we present
distributions for vector boson plus 1,2,3-jet production at the Tevatron and at
the asymptotic running energy of the Large Hadron Collider, including new
Z+3-jet distributions. The Z+2-jet predictions for the second-jet P_T
distribution are compared to CDF data. We present the jet-emission probability
at NLO in W+2-jet events at the LHC, where the tagging jets are taken to be the
ones furthest apart in pseudorapidity. We analyze further the large left-handed
W polarization, identified in our previous study, for W bosons produced at high

Universality in W+Multijet Production
We study -boson production accompanied by multiple jets at 7 TeV at the
LHC. We study the jet-production ratio, of total cross sections for +- to
+()-jet production, and the ratio of distributions in the total
transverse hadronic jet energy . We use the ratios to
extrapolate the total cross section, and the differential distribution in
, to +6-jet production. We use the BlackHat software

NLO vector boson production with light jets
In this contribution we present recent progress in the computation of
next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections for the production of an
electroweak vector boson in association with jets at hadron colliders. We focus
on results obtained using the virtual matrix element library BLACKHAT in
conjunction with SHERPA, focusing on results relevant to understanding the
