    Teamwork in Cybersecurity: Evaluating the Cooperative Board Game [d0x3d!] as an Experimental Testbed

    It is crucial to identify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that contribute to success in cybersecurity teams. We introduce a board game, [d0x3d!], as an experimental testbed designed to create a controlled environment and set of manageable tasks aimed at exploring teamwork competencies that may be relevant to the cybersecurity workforce. [d0x3d!] requires players to work together and share information to retrieve stolen digital assets. The authors aim to improve the efficacy of cybersecurity team training by incorporating modern teamwork theory and measurement.     Trends in the Proceedings of the International Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (2021)

    The field of human factors and its associated research has experienced a large amount of growth over the years. In this paper, we present the results of a text frequency analysis of the Proceedings of the International Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, Vol. 65 Issue 1, September 2021. Popular words in proceedings titles include “Performance” (n = 28), “Task” (n = 24), “Learning” (n = 21), “Robot” (n = 21) , and “User” (n = 21). These are preliminary results of a larger endeavor to uncover the publishing trends within the field of human factors over the last decade. However, the results of this analysis will provide a useful lens through which we can better understand trends within the field of human factors and ergonomics over the past year

    Cyber Hygiene Practices: A Systematic Literature Review

    Cyber hygiene, a term originally derived from the public health literature in reference to personal hygiene and cleanliness, is currently best understood as a set of cybersecurity steps that should be taken to ensure safety and protection for users of computers and other technological devices. Despite the ubiquity of such devices and frequent calls for better cyber hygiene practices, there is little agreement on what practices constitute optimal cyber hygiene. In order to outline best practices for non-expert end-users, our team conducted a systematic literature review. Here, we report the initial results of this three-pronged analysis instituted to develop our own empirically grounded set of best practices for end-user cyber hygiene, and acknowledge lessons learned from this endeavour

    Telemedicine Security: Challenges and Solutions

    The proliferation of telemedicine spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic has come with a variety of human factors challenges. Such challenges include mitigating potential risks associated with the quick transition to virtual care. We identify challenges and solutions related to telemedicine security, and analyze our results using Schlarman’s People, Policy, Technology framework (2001). Our systematic literature review synthe-sizes gray literature (white papers, news articles, and blog posts) in addition to formal (published) litera-ture. This methodology closes the gap between academic research and professional practice and aids in providing timely, practical insights related to cybersecurity and safety in virtual care environments. As the transition from traditional care continues to develop, we seek to better understand emerging vulnerabilities, identify crucial cyber hygiene practices, and provide insights on how to improve the safety of paitent data in virtiual care. Telemedicine is here to stay, and lessons learned from the pandemic are likely to remain useful

    Investigative approaches: Lessons learned from the RaDonda Vaught case

    Accidental patient harms occur frequently in healthcare, but their exact prevalence and interventions that will best prevent them are still poorly understood. In rare cases, healthcare providers who have contributed to accidental patient harm may be criminally prosecuted to obtain justice for the patient and family or to set an example, which theoretically prevents other providers from making similar mistakes due to fear of punishment. A recent case where this strategy was chosen is the RaDonda L. Vaught vs. Tennessee (2022) criminal case. The present article discusses this case and its ramifications, as well as provides concrete recommendations for actions that healthcare organizations should take to foster a safer and more resilient healthcare system. Recommendations include placing an emphasis on just culture; ensuring timely, systems-level investigations of all incidents; creating and facilitating participation in a national reporting system; incorporating Human Factors professionals at multiple levels of organizations; and establishing a national safety board for medicine

    Telerounding: A Scoping Review and Implications for Future Healthcare Practice

    Telerounding is slated to become an important avenue for future healthcare practice. As utilization of telerounding is increasing, a review of the literature is necessary to distill themes and identify critical considerations for the implementation of telerounding. We provide evidence of the utility of telerounding and considerations to support its implementation in future healthcare practice based on a scoping review. Method: We collected articles from nine scientific databases from the earliest dated available articles to August 2020. We identified whether each article centered on telerounding policies, regulations, or practice. We also organized information from each article and sorted themes into four categories: sample characteristics, technology utilized, study constructs, and research outcomes. Results: We identified 21 articles related to telerounding that fit our criteria. All articles emphasized telerounding practice. Most articles reported data collected from surgical wards, had adult samples, and utilized robotic telerounding systems. Most articles reported null effects or positive effects on their measured variables. Discussion: Providers and patients can benefit from the effective implementation of telerounding. Telerounding can support patient care by reducing travel expenses and opportunities for infection. Evidence suggests that telerounding can reduce patient length of stay. Patients and providers are willing to utilize telerounding, but patient willingness is influenced by age and education. Telerounding does not appear to negatively impact satisfaction or patient care. Organizations seeking to implement telerounding systems must consider education for their providers, logistics associated with hardware and software, scheduling, and characteristics of the organizational context that can support telerounding. Considerations provided in this article can mitigate difficulties associated with the implementation of telerounding
