Sociotechnical alignment in biomedicine: The 3D bioprinting market beyond technology convergence
The nature of hybrid technologies has been frequently interpreted with the concept of technology convergence. However, this concept tends to highlight only technical aspects of technology and market evolution. In order to provide a more comprehensive picture, the concept of sociotechnical alignment is explored here.
The field of 3D bioprinting (the production of biological structures with automated, computer-controlled bioprinters) is focused on here. In the emergent global bioprinting market, companies have relied on three core technologies (tissue engineering, additive manufacturing, and software development) and continue to receive inputs from other technologies.
On the biological side, bioprinting has benefited from new approaches such as the use of induced pluripotent stem cells. On the engineering side, it has been possible to use relatively cheap technologies such as open-source processing Arduino boards. On the software side, the proliferation of open source packages has strengthened the possibilities of bioprinting. The combination between these and other technology fringes involves a process of sociotechnical alignment whereby technical, scientific, and political issues are always at play.
As a result, different companies have been able to realize different market strategies, having varied geographical reach. However, the first movements towards extensive globalization can also be noticed. In this way, the current diversity of the bioprinting market may be jeopardized in the years to come
Local Charge Excesses in Metallic Alloys: a Local Field Coherent Potential Approximation Theory
Electronic structure calculations performed on very large supercells have
shown that the local charge excesses in metallic alloys are related through
simple linear relations to the local electrostatic field resulting from
distribution of charges in the whole crystal.
By including local external fields in the single site Coherent Potential
Approximation theory, we develop a novel theoretical scheme in which the local
charge excesses for random alloys can be obtained as the responses to local
external fields. Our model maintains all the computational advantages of a
single site theory but allows for full charge relaxation at the impurity sites.
Through applications to CuPd and CuZn alloys, we find that, as a general rule,
non linear charge rearrangements occur at the impurity site as a consequence of
the complex phenomena related with the electronic screening of the external
potential. This nothwithstanding, we observe that linear relations hold between
charge excesses and external potentials, in quantitative agreement with the
mentioned supercell calculations, and well beyond the limits of linearity for
any other site property.Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 7 figure

Adventures in Holographic Dimer Models
We abstract the essential features of holographic dimer models, and develop
several new applications of these models. First, semi-holographically coupling
free band fermions to holographic dimers, we uncover novel phase transitions
between conventional Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, accompanied by a
change in the structure of the Fermi surface. Second, we make dimer vibrations
propagate through the whole crystal by way of double trace deformations,
obtaining nontrivial band structure. In a simple toy model, the topology of the
band structure experiences an interesting reorganization as we vary the
strength of the double trace deformations. Finally, we develop tools that would
allow one to build, in a bottom-up fashion, a holographic avatar of the Hubbard
model.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures; v2: brief description of case of pure D5 lattice

Optically pure heterobimetallic helicates from self-assembly and click strategies
Single diastereomer, diamagnetic, octahedral Fe(II) tris chelate complexes are synthesised that contain three pendant pyridine proligands pre-organised for coordination to a second metal. They bind Cu(I) and Ag(I) with coordination geometry depending on the identity of the metal and the detail of the ligand structure, but for example homohelical (ÎFe,ÎCu) configured systems with unusual trigonal planar Cu cations are formed exclusively in solution as shown by VT-NMR and supported by DFT calculations. Similar heterobimetallic tris(triazole) complexes are synthesised via clean CuAAC reactions at a tris(alkynyl) complex, although here the configurations of the two metals differ (ÎFe,ÎCu), leading to the first optically pure heterohelicates. A second series of Fe complexes perform less well in either strategy as a result of lack of preorganisation
Persistent Current of Free Electrons in the Plane
Predictions of Akkermans et al. are essentially changed when the Krein
spectral displacement operator is regularized by means of zeta function.
Instead of piecewise constant persistent current of free electrons on the plane
one has a current which varies linearly with the flux and is antisymmetric with
regard to all time preserving values of including . Different
self-adjoint extensions of the problem and role of the resonance are discussed.Comment: (Comment on "Relation between Persistent Currents and the Scattering

Notes on Properties of Holographic Matter
Probe branes with finite worldvolume electric flux in the background created
by a stack of Dp branes describe holographically strongly interacting
fundamental matter at finite density. We identify two quantities whose leading
low temperature behavior is independent of the dimensionality of the probe
branes: specific heat and DC conductivity. This behavior can be inferred from
the dynamics of the fundamental strings which provide a good description of the
probe branes in the regime of low temperatures and finite densities. We also
comment on the speed of sound on the branes and the temperature dependence of
DC conductivity at vanishing charge density.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures; v2: corrected error in Section 6, conclusions

DIAPHRAGM MUSCLE STRIP PREPARATION FOR EVALUATION OF GENE THERAPIES IN mdx MICE
1.â Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a severe muscle wasting disease of young boys with an incidence of one in every 3000, results from a mutation in the gene that encodes dystrophin. The absence of dystrophin expression in skeletal muscles and heart results in the degeneration of muscle fibres and, consequently, severe muscle weakness and wasting. The mdx mouse discovered in 1984, with some adjustments for differences, has proven to be an invaluable model for scientific investigations of dystrophy. 2.â The development of the diaphagm strip preparation provided an ideal experimental model for investigations of skeletal muscle impairments in structure and function induced by interactions of disease- and age-related factors. Unlike the limb muscles of the mdx mouse, which show adaptive changes in structure and function, the diaphragm strip preparation reflects accurately the deterioration in muscle structure and function observed in boys with DMD. 3.â The advent of sophisticated servo motors and force transducers interfaced with state-of-the-art software packages to drive complex experimental designs during the 1990s greatly enhanced the capability of the mdx mouse and the diaphragm strip preparation to evaluate more accurately the impact of the disease on the structureâfunction relationships throughout the life span of the mouse. 4.â Finally, during the 1990s and through the early years of the 21st century, many promising, sophisticated genetic techniques have been designed to ameliorate the devastating impact of muscular dystrophy on the structure and function of skeletal muscles. During this period of rapid development of promising genetic therapies, the combination of the mdx mouse and the diaphragm strip preparation has provided an ideal model for the evaluation of the success, or failure, of these genetic techniques to improve dystrophic muscle structure, function or both. With the 2 year life span of the mdx mouse, the impact of age-related effects can be studied in this model.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72970/1/j.1440-1681.2007.04865.x.pd
Holographic Wilsonian flows and emergent fermions in extremal charged black holes
We study holographic Wilsonian RG in a general class of asymptotically AdS
backgrounds with a U(1) gauge field. We consider free charged Dirac fermions in
such a background, and integrate them up to an intermediate radial distance,
yielding an equivalent low energy dual field theory. The new ingredient,
compared to scalars, involves a `generalized' basis of coherent states which
labels a particular half of the fermion components as coordinates or momenta,
depending on the choice of quantization (standard or alternative). We apply
this technology to explicitly compute RG flows of charged fermionic operators
and their composites (double trace operators) in field theories dual to (a)
pure AdS and (b) extremal charged black hole geometries. The flow diagrams and
fixed points are determined explicitly. In the case of the extremal black hole,
the RG flows connect two fixed points at the UV AdS boundary to two fixed
points at the IR AdS_2 region. The double trace flow is shown, both numerically
and analytically, to develop a pole singularity in the AdS_2 region at low
frequency and near the Fermi momentum, which can be traced to the appearance of
massless fermion modes on the low energy cut-off surface. The low energy field
theory action we derive exactly agrees with the semi-holographic action
proposed by Faulkner and Polchinski in arXiv:1001.5049 [hep-th]. In terms of
field theory, the holographic version of Wilsonian RG leads to a quantum theory
with random sources. In the extremal black hole background the random sources
become `light' in the AdS_2 region near the Fermi surface and emerge as new
dynamical degrees of freedom.Comment: 37 pages (including 8 pages of appendix), 10 figures and 2 table
