    PAAWS: A Collaborative Progam Designed to Serve Preschool Children with Significant Language Impairments

    In Fall 2019, a collaboration was created between UNC\u27s Speech-Language Pathology graduate students and Tozer Primary School\u27s preschool program. Tozer Preschool has a high number of preschool children with significant language needs, including children who need access to augmentative-alternative communication (AAC). Based on this need, the PAAWS program was created (Preschoolers Accessing AAC with Students). Three SLP graduate students have participated and designed this program in conjunction with Robyn Moore, SLP at Tozer Primary School (who is a UNC graduate)

    Talking with Technology Camp: A Collaboration with Children\u27s Hospital Colorado

    Talking with Technology Camp is a one-week, intensive program developed by Children\u27s Hospital Colorado for children who use augmentative and alternative communication devices as their primary means of expressive communication. Each summer, graduate students from the University of Northern Colorado - speech-language pathology program apply for the opportunity to grow their clinical skills alongside speech-language pathologists from Children\u27s Hospital Colorado. During the summer of 2019, 8 graduate students and 2 undergraduate students participated in this program to provide intervention to children with significant communication needs

    An empirical investigation of the emergent issues around OER adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa

    In the past few years, Africa has joined the rest of the world as an active participant in the Open Educational Resource (OER) movement with a number of home-grown and externally driven initiatives. These have the potential to make an immense contribution to teaching and learning in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, certain barriers prevent full participation. This paper reports on qualitative research that sought to investigate SSA's readiness to adopt OERs. This study involves three case studies based in higher education institutions involved in OER projects and located in Kenya, Uganda and South Africa. Contrary to the popular belief, findings indicate that low technological levels in Africa do not necessarily impede the adoption of such educational technologies; the real challenges facing the readiness to adopt OERs appear to be related to socio-economic, cultural, institutional and national issues. This paper argues for a complete mind shift in how people perceive OERs. It also proposes raising awareness of OERs at all levels, involving institutions and government, versioning OERs for the African context and conducting more research on OER adoption

    The Stanford Microarray Database: implementation of new analysis tools and open source release of software

    The Stanford Microarray Database (SMD; ) is a research tool and archive that allows hundreds of researchers worldwide to store, annotate, analyze and share data generated by microarray technology. SMD supports most major microarray platforms, and is MIAME-supportive and can export or import MAGE-ML. The primary mission of SMD is to be a research tool that supports researchers from the point of data generation to data publication and dissemination, but it also provides unrestricted access to analysis tools and public data from 300 publications. In addition to supporting ongoing research, SMD makes its source code fully and freely available to others under an Open Source license, enabling other groups to create a local installation of SMD. In this article, we describe several data analysis tools implemented in SMD and we discuss features of our software release

    Women's Experiences of Care after Stillbirth and Obstetric Fistula: A Phenomenological Study in Kenya

    Background Stillbirth and (obstetric) fistula are traumatic life events, commonly experienced together following an obstructed labour in low- and middle-income countries with limited access to maternity care. Few studies have explored women's experiences of the combined trauma of stillbirth and fistula. Aim To explore the lived experiences of women following stillbirth and fistula. Methods Qualitative, guided by Heideggerian phenomenology. Twenty women who had experienced a stillbirth were interviewed while attending a specialist Hospital fistula service in urban Kenya. Data were analysed following Van Manen's reflexive approach. Results Three main themes summarised participants' experiences: ‘Treated like an alien’ reflected the isolation and stigma felt by women. The additive and multiplying impacts of stillbirth and fistula and the ways in which women coped with their situations were summarised in ‘Shattered dreams’. The impact of beliefs and practices of women and those around them were encapsulated in ‘It was not written on my forehead.’ Conclusion The distress women experienced following the death of a baby was intensified by the development of a fistula. Health professionals lacked understanding of the pathophysiology and identification of fistula, and its association with stillbirth. Women were isolated as they were stigmatised and blamed for both conditions. Difficulty accessing follow-up care meant that women suffered for long periods while living with a constant reminder of their baby's death. Cultural beliefs, faith and family support affected women's resilience, mental health and recovery. Specialist services, staff training and inclusive policies are needed to improve knowledge and awareness and enhance women's experiences

    The Stanford Microarray Database accommodates additional microarray platforms and data formats

    The Stanford Microarray Database (SMD) (http://smd.stanford.edu) is a research tool for hundreds of Stanford researchers and their collaborators. In addition, SMD functions as a resource for the entire biological research community by providing unrestricted access to microarray data published by SMD users and by disseminating its source code. In addition to storing GenePix (Axon Instruments) and ScanAlyze output from spotted microarrays, SMD has recently added the ability to store, retrieve, display and analyze the complete raw data produced by several additional microarray platforms and image analysis software packages, so that we can also now accept data from Affymetrix GeneChips (MAS5/GCOS or dChip), Agilent Catalog or Custom arrays (using Agilent's Feature Extraction software) or data created by SpotReader (Niles Scientific). We have implemented software that allows us to accept MAGE-ML documents from array manufacturers and to submit MIAME-compliant data in MAGE-ML format directly to ArrayExpress and GEO, greatly increasing the ease with which data from SMD can be published adhering to accepted standards and also increasing the accessibility of published microarray data to the general public. We have introduced a new tool to facilitate data sharing among our users, so that datasets can be shared during, before or after the completion of data analysis. The latest version of the source code for the complete database package was released in November 2004 (http://smd.stanford.edu/download/), allowing researchers around the world to deploy their own installations of SMD

    A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study of Autologous CD34+ Cell Therapy for Critical Limb Ischemia

    Critical limb ischemia (CLI) portends a risk of major amputation of 25-35% within 1 year of diagnosis. Pre-clinical studies provide evidence that intramuscular injection of autologous CD34+ cells improve limb perfusion and reduce amputation risk. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of intramuscular injections of autologous CD34+ cells in subjects with moderate or high-risk CLI who were poor or non-candidates for surgical or percutaneous revascularization (ACT34-CLI)

    In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: Non-standard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for better reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer-review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants
