    Submarine glide blocks from the Lower Cretaceous of the Antarctic Peninsula

    Isolated exotic blocks of late Jurassic age occur within an undeformed succession of marine Lower Cretaceous back‐arc basin deposits on the west coast of James Ross Island, Antarctica. These flat, tabular slabs range up to 200 × 800 m in cross‐section and lie concordant with the enclosing Cretaceous strata. Although mainly undeformed, one block displays a range of emplacement‐related deformation structures, comparable in many respects to tectonic fabrics produced by simple shear. Emplacement by submarine block gliding is proposed, possibly as the final phase in the evolution of a composite mass transport event. Derivation of such gigantic slabs requires the existence of a steep, highly unstable basin margin during the early Cretaceous. In more complex terranes, differentiation between gravity slides and thrust slices can be difficult. Clearly, internal and marginal disruption of an allochthonous unit is not diagnostic since structures developed within a lithified block during submarine gliding may closely mimic tectonic fabrics. Where contact relationships are ambiguous, emplacement by gravity sliding is suggested by the increasing intensity of internal disruption towards the basal margin and by the style of deformation, reflecting simple shear under low overburden

    A prognosis-based approach to infertility: understanding the role of time

    The current definition of infertility acknowledges the importance of duration of pregnancy seeking but fails to recognize the prevalent negative impact of female age. In fact, the diagnosis of unexplained infertility increases with women's age because of our incapacity to discern between age-related infertility and real unexplained infertility. Physicians' response to the pressures of increased female age has been to take prompt refuge in assisted reproduction despite the lack of robust evidence and the inherent risks and costs of these procedures. Moreover, the prioritization of immediate health gains over those in the future, preference for accessing active treatment rapidly and reluctance to wait for spontaneous pregnancy expose patients to additional risks of overtreatment. Solutions are not simple to find but an alternative and innovative vision of infertility based on prognosis may be a valid solution. The availability of validated dynamic models based on real-life data that could predict both natural and ART-mediated conceptions may be of benefit. They could facilitate patients' counselling and could optimize the chances of success without exposing patients to unnecessary, expensive and demanding treatment

    Protect us from poor-quality medical research

    Much of the published medical research is apparently flawed, cannot be replicated and/or has limited or no utility. This article presents an overview of the current landscape of biomedical research, identifies problems associated with common study designs and considers potential solutions. Randomized clinical trials, observational studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses are discussed in terms of their inherent limitations and potential ways of improving their conduct, analysis and reporting. The current emphasis on statistical significance needs to be replaced by sound design, transparency and willingness to share data with a clear commitment towards improving the quality and utility of clinical research.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
