A web-based gamification of upper extremity robotic rehabilitation

In recent years, gamification has become very popular for rehabilitating different cognitive and motor problems. It has been shown that rehabilitation is effective when it starts early enough and it is intensive and repetitive. However, the success of rehabilitation depends also on the motivation and perseverance of patients during treatment. Adding serious games to the rehabilitation procedure will help the patients to overcome the monotonicity of the treatment procedure. On the other hand, if a variety of games can be used with a robotic rehabilitation system, it will help to define tasks with different levels of difficulty with greater variety. In this paper we introduce a procedure for connecting a rehabilitation robot to several web-based games. In other words, an interface is designed that connects the robot to a computer through a USB port. To validate the usefulness of the proposed approach, a researcher designed survey was used to get feedback from several users. The results demonstrate that having several games besides rehabilitation makes the procedure of rehabilitation entertaining.Comment: 2021 International Serious Games Symposium (ISGS

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to compare several selection strategies and to find a method of selection permitting improvement in body weight with possible decrease or, if possible, slight increase in fat tail weight. Stochastic simulation was used to produce a flock of 10 breeding rams and 250 breeding ewes with four lambs per ewe. A total of 1000 lambs were produced for five consecutive non-overlapping generations. Data were simulated using a two trait model. Both single trait and two trait models were used under phenotypic and genetic selection. In two trait selection, economic weights were used to construct the selection indices. A range of covariance components were used for generating data and different sets of economic weights were applied to test the sensitivity of different selection strategies to these parameters. With low heritability for both traits, the least genetic trend was achieved for tail weight with phenotypic selection index. Highest aggregate genotype was obtained with two trait genetic method. With increased heritability for tail weight and under single trait selection, an increase in total body weight fully coincided with increased genetic trend in fat tail weight. The highest aggregate genotype and the lowest genetic trend in fat tail weight was obtained when negative economic weight was applied to fat tail weight. When high heritability was used for simulation, the two trait genetic selection model performed the best. However, when two trait genetic evaluation is not practical, the best alternative would be to use two trait phenotypic selection based on economic weights for the two traits

Background Use of the Amplatzer septal occluder (ASO) for the closure of secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) has recently become the procedure of choice, while earlier the only treatment for ASD was surgical closure. This study compares the right ventricular indices of the ASO group with the surgical closure group one year after intervention in adults. Methods From January 2008 to February 2010, 38 patients with isolated atrial septal defect of the secundum type one year after surgical (n = 20, age = 27 ± 4 years, 13 females, 7 males) or Amplatzer septal occluder closure (n = 18, age = 25 ± 4 years, 12 females, 6 males) were studied. At the same time, thirty-one age-matched normal subjects (age = 26 ± 6 years, 23 females, 9 males) were included as the control group. Strain and strain rate of the right ventricle were measured. Results The mean values of strain of the midportion were −26% ± 11.7%, −8.9% ± 4.2%, and 24.5% ± 7.4% ( P < 0.001). Strain rates of the midportion were −2.19 ± 0.6 s −1 , −1.2 ± 0.4 s −1 , −1.9 ± 0.6 s −1 ( P < 0.001) in ASO, surgery, and control groups, respectively. Conclusion This study showed that the right ventricle might show better performance in the ASO than the surgery group in adults with ASD in midterm follow-up

Family History of Alzheimer’s Disease Increases the Risk of COVID-19 Positivity: A SUMS Employees Cohort-based Study

Background: Substantial data indicate that genetic and environmental factors play a key role in determining the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Moreover, it is known that having relatives with AD increases the risk of developing this disease. Objective: This study is aimed at investigating whether having a family history of AD, may increase the risk of COVID-19 in a cohort-based study.Material and Methods: Participants of this retrospective cohort study were previously enrolled in the SUMS Employees Cohort (SUMSEC). All participants including those whose SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed by positive PCR test and chest CT scan were requested to respond to interviewer-administered questionnaires. Moreover, AD was diagnosed via memory and thinking impairment, concentration problems, confusion with location, and problems in finishing daily tasks. Results: The total numbers of female and male participants with a family history of AD were 463 and 222 individuals, respectively. When all types of family history of AD were considered, a 51.3% increase was found in the relative frequency of the participants with both family history of AD and confirmed COVID-19 compared with those only with a family history of AD. Conclusion: Despite the limitations of our study, and from a broader perspective, our findings can further support the concept that AD risk haplotypes including APOE are linked to the same morbidities from cardiovascular disease and obesity that increase vulnerability to COVID-19. Given this consideration, millions of APOE ε4 carriers around the globe should be advised to take additional precautions to prevent life-threatening diseases such as COVID-19

Abstract

Background

Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease in Iran. Although many treatments have been suggested for this disease, there hasn't been an effective and safe treatment yet. Regarding the healing effect of honey in the chronic ulcers and its reported therapeutic effect in cutaneous leishmaniasis, we performed a study to better evaluate the efficacy of honey in cutaneous leishmaniasis and its final scar.

Methods

In a prospective clinical trial, 100 patients with confirmed cutaneous leishmaniasis were selected and randomized into 2 groups. Group A were treated with topical honey twice daily along with intralesional injection of glucantime once weekly until complete healing of the ulcer or for maximum of 6 weeks. Group B were treated with intralesional injection of glucantime alone until complete healing of the ulcer or for a maximum of 6 weeks, too. The patients were followed for 4 months. The collected data were analyzed statistically using statistical tests including Chi-square, Mann Whitney and Kaplan – Mayer tests.

Results

In this study, 45 patients that had cutaneous leishmaniasis were treated with intralesional glucantime alone and 45 patients were treated with topical honey and glucantime . Ten patients left out the study. In the glucantime alone treated group, 32 patients (71.1%) had complete cure whereas in the group treated with both glucantime & topical honey, 23 patients (51.1%) achieved complete cure. This difference was significant statistically (p = 0.04).

Conclusion

Further studies to better clarify the efficacy of honey in cutaneous leishmaniasis is needed. We suggest that in another study, the efficacy of honey with standardized level of antibacterial activity is evaluated against cutaneous leishmaniasis.</p

The unfinished agenda of communicable diseases among children and adolescents before the COVID-19 pandemic, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Communicable disease control has long been a focus of global health policy. There have been substantial reductions in the burden and mortality of communicable diseases among children younger than 5 years, but we know less about this burden in older children and adolescents, and it is unclear whether current programmes and policies remain aligned with targets for intervention. This knowledge is especially important for policy and programmes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to use the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 to systematically characterise the burden of communicable diseases across childhood and adolescence. METHODS: In this systematic analysis of the GBD study from 1990 to 2019, all communicable diseases and their manifestations as modelled within GBD 2019 were included, categorised as 16 subgroups of common diseases or presentations. Data were reported for absolute count, prevalence, and incidence across measures of cause-specific mortality (deaths and years of life lost), disability (years lived with disability [YLDs]), and disease burden (disability-adjusted life-years [DALYs]) for children and adolescents aged 0-24 years. Data were reported across the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) and across time (1990-2019), and for 204 countries and territories. For HIV, we reported the mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) as a measure of health system performance. FINDINGS: In 2019, there were 3·0 million deaths and 30·0 million years of healthy life lost to disability (as measured by YLDs), corresponding to 288·4 million DALYs from communicable diseases among children and adolescents globally (57·3% of total communicable disease burden across all ages). Over time, there has been a shift in communicable disease burden from young children to older children and adolescents (largely driven by the considerable reductions in children younger than 5 years and slower progress elsewhere), although children younger than 5 years still accounted for most of the communicable disease burden in 2019. Disease burden and mortality were predominantly in low-SDI settings, with high and high-middle SDI settings also having an appreciable burden of communicable disease morbidity (4·0 million YLDs in 2019 alone). Three cause groups (enteric infections, lower-respiratory-tract infections, and malaria) accounted for 59·8% of the global communicable disease burden in children and adolescents, with tuberculosis and HIV both emerging as important causes during adolescence. HIV was the only cause for which disease burden increased over time, particularly in children and adolescents older than 5 years, and especially in females. Excess MIRs for HIV were observed for males aged 15-19 years in low-SDI settings. INTERPRETATION: Our analysis supports continued policy focus on enteric infections and lower-respiratory-tract infections, with orientation to children younger than 5 years in settings of low socioeconomic development. However, efforts should also be targeted to other conditions, particularly HIV, given its increased burden in older children and adolescents. Older children and adolescents also experience a large burden of communicable disease, further highlighting the need for efforts to extend beyond the first 5 years of life. Our analysis also identified substantial morbidity caused by communicable diseases affecting child and adolescent health across the world.
