    The experimental observation of effects due to Berry's phase in quantum systems is certainly one of the most impressive demonstrations of the correctness of the superposition principle in quantum mechanics. Since Berry's original paper in 1984, the spin 1/2 coupled with rotating external magnetic field has been one of the most studied models where those phases appear. We also consider a special case of this soluble model. A detailed analysis of the coupled differential equations and comparison with exact results teach us why the usual procedure (of neglecting nondiagonal terms) is mathematically sound.Comment: 9 page

    Planning health workforce training in the detection and prevention of excessive alcohol consumption: an optimization-based approach

    The adequate training of health workforce in the field of excessive alcohol consumption is essential to provide health professionals with the necessary tools for an adequate provision of care, thus leading to a decrease in alcohol consumption. Proper planning of such training is thus essential, but literature in this area is still scarce. This paper proposes an optimization model based on mathematical programming for supporting the planning of health workforce training in the field of excessive alcohol consumption in National Health Service-based countries – the WFTMalcohol. The model aims at informing on (i) how many health professionals (physicians and nurses) should be trained per year and health unit, and (ii) which training packages should be available per year. The model allows exploring the impact of considering different objectives relevant in this sector, including the minimization of costs and the maximization of multiple performance indicators. Acknowledging that several sources of uncertainty may affect planning decisions, a sensitivity analysis on key parameters of the model is performed. To illustrate the applicability of the model, a case study based on the Oeste Sul ACES in Lisbon is analyzed.     Com o advento da agricultura orgânica no Vale do Submédio São Francisco, surge a demanda por técnicas que atendam aos princípios desse sistema de exploração agrícola. Dessa forma, realizou-se este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência de fosfatos naturais em três solos (argissolo Acinzentado distrófico - PACd, Argissolo Amarelo eutrofico - PAe e Vertissolo - V) da região, cultivados com melão (Cucumis melo) em vasos, na Embrapa Semi-Árido. Os tratmentos constituíram um fatorial (3 x 4) + 1, sendo três doses de P (40, 80 e 160 mg dm-³ de P2O5), quatro fontes de P (superfosfato triplo-ST, termofosfato-TM, fosfato natural de Gafsa-FG e fosfato natural Fosbahia-FB) e uma testemunha sem P, dispostos no delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições. Cada solo constitui um ensaio. Após 38 dias de cultivo do melão, avaliaram-se a produção de matéria seca (MS) da parte aérea, o P absorvido pela planta e o P do solo extraído pelos métodos de Mehlich-1 e resina de troca aniônica (RTA). No V e PACd, os fosfatos apresentaram-se menos eficientes que no PAe. O TM foi a fonte de P que apresentou maior eficiência para produção de MS do melão nos três solos (56 a 100% em relação ao superfosfato triplo). No PAe, o FG também mostrou boa eficiência, sendo equivalente a 80% do superfosfato triplo). Os extratores Mehlich e RTA foram igualmente eficientes para avaliar a disponibilidade do P

    Atypical haemolytic-uraemic syndrome caused by factor H mutation: case report and new management strategies in children

    Atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome is causedby alternative complement pathway dysregulation. It has recently been recognised that most cases are due to genetic factors and a growing list of mutations has been described. Atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome is associated with a dismal prognosis, a relapsing course, high acute mortality and frequent progression to end-stage renal disease. We describe a five-year-old boy admitted with a first recurrence of atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome. The primary onset of the disease was at 15 months of age, following which there was complete recovery of haematological and renal parameters. His family history was significant in that his mother had died at the age of only 23 years of a stroke with associated thrombotic microangiopathy, suggesting a familial form of the disease. Sequencing of the gene encoding complement factor H revealed a heterozygous SCR20 mutation (3644G>T, Arg1215Leu), confirming the diagnosis. The patient was successfully treated with fresh frozen plasma infusions that induced disease remission.
