    Accuracy-awareness: A pessimistic approach to optimal control of triggered mobile communication networks

    We use nonlinear model predictive control to procure a joint control of mobility and transmission to minimize total network communication energy use. The nonlinear optimization problem is solved numerically in a self-triggered framework, where the next control update time depends on the predicted state trajectory and the accuracy of the numerical solution. Solution accuracy must be accounted for in any circumstance where systems are run in open-loop for long stretches of time based on potentially inaccurate predictions. These triggering conditions allow us to place wireless nodes in low energy ‘idle' states for extended periods, saving over 70% of energy compared to a periodic policy where nodes consistently use energy to receive control updates

    Consumer Adoption of Self-Service Technologies in the Context of the Jordanian Banking Industry: Examining the Moderating Role of Channel Types

    YesThis study aimed to examine the key factors predicting Jordanian consumers’ intentions and usage of three types of self-service banking technologies. This study also sought to test if the impacts of these main predictors could be moderated by channel type. This study proposed a conceptual model by integrating factors from the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), along with perceived risk. The required data were collected from a convenience sample of Jordanian banking customers using a survey questionnaire. The statistical results strongly support the significant influence of performance expectancy, social influence, and perceived risk on customer intentions for the three types of SSTs examined. The results of the X2 differences test also indicate that there are significant differences in the influence of the main predictors due to the moderating effect of channel type. One of the key contributions of this study is that three types of SSTs were tested in a single study, which had not been done before, leading to the identification of the factors common to all three types, as well as the salient factors unique to each type

    An equity analysis of utilization of health services in Afghanistan using a national household survey

    Abstract Background Afghanistan has made great strides in the coverage of health services across the country but coverage of key indicators remains low nationally and whether the poorest households are accessing these services is not well understood. Methods We analyzed the Afghanistan Mortality Survey 2010 on utilization of inpatient and outpatient care, institutional delivery and antenatal care by wealth quintiles. Concentration indexes (CIs) were generated to measure the inequality of using the four services. Additional analyses were conducted to examine factors that explain the health inequalities (e.g. age, gender, education and residence). Results Among households reporting utilization of health services, public health facilities were used more often for inpatient care, while they were used less for outpatient care. Overall, the utilization of inpatient and outpatient care, and antenatal care was equally distributed among income groups, with CIs of 0.04, 0.03 and 0.08, respectively. However, the poor used more public facilities while the wealthy used more private facilities. There was a substantial inequality in the use of institutional delivery services, with a CI of 0.31. Poorer women had a lower rate of institutional deliveries overall, in both public and private facilities, compared to the wealthy. Location was an important factor in explaining the inequality in the use of health services. Conclusions The large gap between the rich and poor in access to and utilization of key maternal services, such as institutional delivery, may be a central factor to the high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity and impedes efforts to make progress toward universal health coverage. While poorer households use public health services more often, the use of public facilities for outpatient visits remains half that of private facilities. Pro-poor targeting as well as a better understanding of the private sector’s role in increasing equitable coverage of maternal health services is needed. Equity-oriented approaches in health should be prioritized to promote more inclusive health system reforms

    Robotic networks, particularly of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are benefiting from increased on-board computing capabilities. The aim of our work is to minimize the total communication energy required by a UAV-assisted network to achieve certain mobility and data throughput objectives. We capture the full cost of communication by defining communication energy as the sum of transmission energy and propulsion energy used for the purpose of facilitating transmission. Simulation results show how joint optimization of mobility and transmission schemes results in significant energy savings and increased network capacity

    Information Transmission Bounds between Moving Terminals

    In networks of mobile autonomous agents, e.g. for data acquisition, we may wish to maximize data transfer or to reliably transfer a minimum amount of data, subject to quality of service or energy constraints. These requirements can be guaranteed through both offline node design/specifications and online trajectory/communications design. Regardless of the distance between them, for a stationary point-to-point transmitter-receiver pair communicating across a single link under average power constraints, the total data transfer is unbounded as time tends to infinity. In contrast, we show that if the transmitter/receiver is moving at any constant speed away from each other, then the maximum transmittable data is bounded. Although general closed-form expressions as a function of communication and mobility profile parameters do not yet exist, we provide closed-form expressions for particular cases, such as ideal free space path loss. Under more general scenarios we instead give lower bounds on the total transmittable information across a single link between mobile nodes

    Networks of autonomous agents are becoming ubiquitous, motivating the challenging task of developing control policies for communication across these networks. The aim is usually to maximize the data transmission rate, or to reliably transfer a minimum amount of data subject to network constraints. For a stationary transmitter-receiver pair under an average transmit power constraint, the total amount of data that can be transmitted is unbounded as transmission time tends to infinity. We show that, in contrast, if the transmitter is moving at a constant speed, then the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted is bounded. This bound is of particular relevance to networks of aerial vehicles, where distances may quickly grow large and channel gain is dominated by path loss dynamics

    Energy-efficient communication in mobile aerial relay-assisted networks using predictive control

    Energy-efficient communication in wireless networks of mobile autonomous agents mandates joint optimization of both transmission and propulsion energy. In Faqir et al. (2017) we developed communication-theoretic data transmission and Newtonian flight mechanics models to formulate a nonlinear optimal control problem. Here we extend the previous work by generalizing the communication model to include UAV-appropriate slow fading channels and specifically investigate the potential from joint optimization of mobility and communication over a multiple access channel. Numerical results exemplify the potential energy savings available to all nodes through this joint optimization. Finally, using the slow fading channel problem formulation, we generate a chance-constrained nonlinear model predictive control scheme for control of a terrestrial network served by a single UAV relay. Closed-loop simulations are performed subject to uncertainties in both transmission and mobility models
