Design Patterns for Fusion-Based Object Retrieval
We address the task of ranking objects (such as people, blogs, or verticals)
that, unlike documents, do not have direct term-based representations. To be
able to match them against keyword queries, evidence needs to be amassed from
documents that are associated with the given object. We present two design
patterns, i.e., general reusable retrieval strategies, which are able to
encompass most existing approaches from the past. One strategy combines
evidence on the term level (early fusion), while the other does it on the
document level (late fusion). We demonstrate the generality of these patterns
by applying them to three different object retrieval tasks: expert finding,

Temperature dependence and resonance effects in Raman scattering of phonons in NdFeAsOF single crystals
We report plane-polarized Raman scattering spectra of iron oxypnictide
superconductor NdFeAsOF single crystals with varying fluorine
content. The spectra exhibit sharp and symmetrical phonon lines with a weak
dependence on fluorine doping . The temperature dependence does not show any
phonon anomaly at the superconducting transition. The Fe related phonon
intensity shows a strong resonant enhancement below 2 eV. We associate the
resonant enhancement to the presence of an interband transition around 2 eV
observed in optical conductivity. Our results point to a rather weak coupling
between Raman-active phonons and electronic excitations in iron oxypnictides

Infrared anomalous Hall effect in SrRuO: Evidence for crossover to intrinsic behavior
The origin of the Hall effect in many itinerant ferromagnets is still not
resolved, with an anomalous contribution from the sample magnetization that can
exhibit extrinsic or intrinsic behavior. We report the first mid-infared (MIR)
measurements of the complex Hall (), Faraday (), and Kerr
() angles, as well as the Hall conductivity () in a
SrRuO film in the 115-1400 meV energy range. The magnetic field,
temperature, and frequency dependence of the Hall effect is explored. The MIR
magneto-optical response shows very strong frequency dependence, including sign
changes. Below 200 meV, the MIR changes sign between 120 and 150
K, as is observed in dc Hall measurements. Above 200 meV, the temperature
dependence of is similar to that of the dc magnetization and the
measurements are in good agreement with predictions from a band calculation for
the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The temperature and frequency
dependence of the measured Hall effect suggests that whereas the behavior above
200 meV is consistent with an intrinsic AHE, the extrinsic AHE plays an
important role in the lower energy response.Comment: The resolution of figures is improve
Toward the Gravity Dual of Heterotic Small Instantons
The question of what happens when the heterotic SO(32) instanton becomes
small was answered sometime back by Witten. The heterotic theory develops an
enhanced Sp(2k) gauge symmetry for k small instantons, besides the allowed
SO(32) gauge symmetry. An interesting question now is to ask what happens when
we take the large k limit. In this paper we argue that in some special cases,
where Gauss' law allows the large k limit, the dynamics of the large k small
instantons can be captured by a dual gravitational description. For the cases
that we elaborate in this paper, the gravity duals are non-Kahler manifolds
although in general they could be non-geometric. These small instantons are
heterotic five-branes and the duality allows us to study the strongly coupled
field theories on these five-branes. We review and elaborate on some of the
recent observations pointing towards this duality, and argue that in certain
cases the gauge/gravity duality may be understood as small instanton
transitions under which the instantons smoothen out and consequently lose the
Sp(2k) gauge symmetry. This may explain how branes disappear on the dual side
and are replaced by fluxes. We analyse the torsion classes before and after the
transitions, and discuss briefly how the ADHM sigma model and related vector
