Microcrystalline silicon growth for heterojunction solar cells

Microcrystalline Si (m-Si) films with a 1.7eV energy bandgap and crystal size of several hundred A were e-beam evaporated on single crystalline Si (c-Si) to form a heterojunction with the substrate, or a window layer to a single crystalline p-n junction (heteroface structure). The goal was to enhance Voc by such uses of the larger bandgap m-Si, with the intriguing prospect of forming heterostructures with exact lattice match on each layer. The heterojunction structure was affected by interface and shunting problems and the best Voc achieved was only 482mV, well below that of single crystal Si homojunctions. The heteroface structure showed promise for some of the samples with p m-Si/p-n structure (the complementary structure did not show any improvement). Although several runs with different deposition conditions were run, the results were inconsistent. Any Voc enhancement obtained was too small to compensate for the current loss due to the extra absorption and poor carrier transport properties of the m-Si film

Temperature dependence and resonance effects in Raman scattering of phonons in NdFeAsOx_{x}F1x_{1-x} single crystals

We report plane-polarized Raman scattering spectra of iron oxypnictide superconductor NdFeAsO1x_{1-x}Fx_x single crystals with varying fluorine xx content. The spectra exhibit sharp and symmetrical phonon lines with a weak dependence on fluorine doping xx. The temperature dependence does not show any phonon anomaly at the superconducting transition. The Fe related phonon intensity shows a strong resonant enhancement below 2 eV. We associate the resonant enhancement to the presence of an interband transition around 2 eV observed in optical conductivity. Our results point to a rather weak coupling between Raman-active phonons and electronic excitations in iron oxypnictides superconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

Information of Structures in Galaxy Distribution

We introduce an information-theoretic measure, the Renyi information, to describe the galaxy distribution in space. We discuss properties of the information measure, and demonstrate its relationship with the probability distribution function and multifractal descriptions. Using the First Look Survey galaxy samples observed by the Infrared Array Camera onboard Spitzer Space Telescope, we present measurements of the Renyi information, as well as the counts-in-cells distribution and multifractal properties of galaxies in mid-infrared wavelengths. Guided by multiplicative cascade simulation based on a binomial model, we verify our measurements, and discuss the spatial selection effects on measuring information of the spatial structures. We derive structure scan functions at scales where selection effects are small for the Spitzer samples. We discuss the results, and the potential of applying the Renyi information to measuring other spatial structures.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, submitted to ApJ; To appear in The Astrophysical Journal 2006, 644, 678 (June 20th
