    Mass coupling and Q1ofimpuritylimitednormalQ^{-1} of impurity-limited normal ^3$He in a torsion pendulum

    We present results of the Q1Q^{-1} and period shift, ΔP\Delta P, for 3^3He confined in a 98% nominal open aerogel on a torsion pendulum. The aerogel is compressed uniaxially by 10% along a direction aligned to the torsion pendulum axis and was grown within a 400 μ\mum tall pancake (after compression) similar to an Andronikashvili geometry. The result is a high QQ pendulum able to resolve Q1Q^{-1} and mass coupling of the impurity-limited 3^3He over the whole temperature range. After measuring the empty cell background, we filled the cell above the critical point and observe a temperature dependent period shift, ΔP\Delta P, between 100 mK and 3 mK that is 2.9% of the period shift (after filling) at 100 mK. The Q1Q^{-1} due to the 3^3He decreases by an order of magnitude between 100 mK and 3 mK at a pressure of 0.14±0.030.14\pm0.03 bar.     Power outage detection methods for theoperation of a shunt active power flter as energy backup system

    This paper presents the study of power outage detection methods that can be applied to a Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) with energy backup capability. SAPFs can successfully compensate Power Quality problems related with distorted or unbalanced currents and low power factor. Future Smart Grids will combine devices, control strategies and functionalities to increase the grid reliability and the power management capability. One of the main tools necessary to enable these features is the information of what is occurring in all the smart grid parts. In this context the fast detection of power outages is critical, so this paper also contributes for the discussion of the best ways to extract information in the context of future smart grids.     Dynamics of Tachyon and Phantom Field beyond the Inverse Square Potentials

    We investigate the cosmological evolution of the tachyon and phantom-tachyon scalar field by considering the potential parameter Γ\Gamma(=VV"V2=\frac{V V"}{V'^2}) as a function of another potential parameter λ\lambda(=VκV3/2=\frac{V'}{\kappa V^{3/2}}), which correspondingly extends the analysis of the evolution of our universe from two-dimensional autonomous dynamical system to the three-dimension. It allows us to investigate the more general situation where the potential is not restricted to inverse square potential and .One result is that, apart from the inverse square potential, there are a large number of potentials which can give the scaling and dominant solution when the function Γ(λ)\Gamma(\lambda) equals 3/23/2 for one or some values of λ\lambda_{*} as well as the parameter λ\lambda_{*} satisfies condition Eq.(18) or Eq.(19).     Photoresponsive and Ultraviolet to Visible-Light Range Photocatalytic Properties of ZnO:Sb Nanowires

    100學年度研究獎補助論文[[abstract]]Zinc oxide (ZnO) doped antimony (Sb) nanowires have been synthesized for improving ultraviolet sensing and photocatalytic properties. Upon illumination by UV light (365nm , 2.33mWcm−2 ), the photoelectric current of the ZnO:Sb nanowires exhibited a rapid photoresponse as compared to that of the ZnO nanowires. A highest ratio of photocurrent to dark current of around 48.8-fold was achieved in the as-synthesized ZnO:Sb nanowires. A UV-visible spectrophotometer was used to investigate the absorbance spectrum of the ZnO:Sb nanowires, which exhibited a high absorbance ratio with redshift effect in contrast to that of the ZnO nanowires.     Amplification of evanescent waves in a lossy left-handed material slab

    We carry out finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, with a specially-designed boundary condition, on pure evanescent waves interacting with a lossy left-handed material (LHM) slab. Our results provide the first full-wave numerical evidence for the amplification of evanescent waves inside a LHM slab of finite absorption. The amplification is due to the interactions between the evanescent waves and the coupled surface polaritons at the two surfaces of the LHM slab and the physical process can be described by a simple model.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Safety and efficacy of kidney transplantation in patients with aortoiliac stenosis:a retrospective cohort study

    BACKGROUND: The impact of aortoiliac occlusive disease on kidney transplantation remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the clinical outcomes of kidney transplant patients with aortoiliac atherosclerotic stenosis. METHODS: Retrospective data from our transplant center were used to identify patients undergoing kidney transplantation between January 2010 and December 2020. Aortoiliac atherosclerotic stenosis was screened and stratified by the Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) II classification. The primary outcome was patient survival. Secondary outcomes were 90-day mortality, death-censored graft survival, graft function, and arterial complications. Propensity score matching was used to match all patients in the stenosis group with patients without stenosis sharing similar characteristics. RESULTS: The analysis included 655 patients, 524 without stenosis and 131 with aortoiliac stenosis (95 with TASC A/B stenosis and 36 with TASC C/D stenosis). Recipient age [median (IQR), 66 (60-70) vs. 66 (59-71) years; P =0.47], sex [male: 87 (66%) vs. 355 (68%), P =0.85], and comorbidities were comparable between the stenosis and no-stenosis groups. Forty-six (35%) patients with stenosis were symptomatic. Patient survival was significantly lower in the stenosis group compared with the no-stenosis group (TASC A/B: 30.6% vs. no-stenosis: 44.1%, P =0.013; TASC C/D: 11.4% vs. no-stenosis: 44.1%, P &lt;0.001). The incidence rates of artery dissection, lower extremity ischemia, and acute thrombosis were significantly higher in the stenosis group ( P &lt;0.001). However, death-censored graft survival (TASC A/B: 73.6% vs. no-stenosis: 72.9%, P =0.62; TASC C/D: 58.1% vs. no-stenosis: 72.9%, P =0.16) and graft function were comparable between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Aortoiliac atherosclerotic stenosis significantly impacts patient survival but not graft survival. Our analyses suggest that patients with TASC A/B stenosis have prolonged survival and enhanced quality of life through kidney transplantation. However, for patients with TASC C/D stenosis, kidney transplantation improves quality of life without bringing survival benefits.</p

    Curie temperature enhancement of electron doped Sr2_2FeMoO6_6 perovskites studied by photoemission spectroscopy

    We report here on the electronic structure of electron-doped half-metallic ferromagnetic perovskites such Sr2x_{2-x}Lax_xFeMoO6_6 (xx=0-0.6) as obtained from high-resolved valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (PES). By comparing the PES spectra with band structure calculations, a distinctive peak at the Fermi level (EF_F) with predominantly (Fe+Mo) t2g_{2g}^\downarrow character has been evidenced for all samples, irrespectively of the xx values investigated. Moreover, we show that the electron doping due to the La substitution provides selectively delocalized carriers to the t2g_{2g}^\downarrow metallic spin channel. Consequently, a gradual rising of the density of states at the EF_F has been observed as a function of the La doping. By changing the incoming photon energy we have shown that electron doping mainly rises the density of states of Mo parentage. These findings provide fundamental clues for understanding the origin of ferromagnetism in these oxides and shall be of relevance for tailoring oxides having still higher TC_C

    Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm does not Improve Early Survival versus Open Repair in Patients Younger than 60 Years

    AbstractObjectivesMultiple randomised trials have demonstrated lower perioperative mortality after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) compared to open surgical repair for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). However, in these trials the mortality advantage for EVAR is being lost within 2 years of repair and the patients evaluated are relatively older with no study specifically comparing EVAR and open repair for patients younger than 60 years of age.DesignA retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data.Materials and methodsPatients younger than 60 years of age who underwent EVAR and open surgical repair for elective infrarenal AAA were identified from the 2007–09 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) – a prospective database maintained at 237 centres across the United States. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed.ResultsOf the 651 patients, 369 (56.7%) underwent EVAR and 282 (43.3%) underwent open repair. Thirty-day mortality for EVAR and open repair were 1.1% and 0.4%, respectively. This was not significantly different on univariate (P = 0.22) as well as multivariate (P = 0.69) analysis after controlling for other co-morbidities. On multivariate analysis, body mass index, history of stroke and bleeding disorder prior to surgery were associated with a higher 30-day mortality after AAA repair (combined open and EVAR).ConclusionsThese contemporary results demonstrate that the 30-day mortality rate after open repair is similar to that after EVAR in patients younger than 60 years with infrarenal AAA

    Superconductivity and single crystal growth of Ni0:05TaS2

    Superconductivity was discovered in a Ni0:05TaS2 single crystal. A Ni0:05TaS2 single crystal was successfully grown via the NaCl/KCl flux method. The obtained lattice constant c of Ni0:05TaS2 is 1.1999 nm, which is significantly smaller than that of 2H-TaS2 (1.208 nm). Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that the superconductivity transition temperature of Ni0:05TaS2 is enhanced from 0.8 K (2H-TaS2) to 3.9 K. The charge-density-wave transition of the matrix compound 2H-TaS2 is suppressed in Ni0:05TaS2. The success of Ni0:05TaS2 single crystal growth via a NaCl/KCl flux demonstrates that NaCl/KCl flux method will be a feasible method for single crystal growth of the layered transition metal dichalcogenides.Comment: 13pages, 6 figures, Published in SS
