Li Fang-Kuei (1902-1987)
Fang-Kuei Li was one of the foremost scholars of Thai and Sino-Tibetan studies and a major contributor to Amerind studies. Born in China, he was one of the early scholars sent to the United States to study. He had developed an interest in language while learning English, Latin, and German as part of his studies in China, and so he decided to study linguistics in the United States. In 1924, he went to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, receiving his B.A. 2 years later, then moved to the University of Chicago, where he received his M.A. and Ph.D., studying with Edward Sapir, Leonard Bloomfield, and Carl Darling Buck
Consistency between dynamical and thermodynamical stabilities for perfect fluid in theories
We investigate the stability criterions for perfect fluid in theories
which is an important generalization of general relativity. Firstly, using
Wald's general variation principle, we recast Seifert's work and obtain the
dynamical stability criterion. Then using our generalized thermodynamical
criterion, we obtain the concrete expressions of the criterion. We show that
the dynamical stability criterion is exactly the same as the thermodynamical
stability criterion. This result suggests that there is an inherent connection
between the thermodynamics and gravity in theories. It should be pointed
out that using the thermodynamical method to determine the stability for
perfect fluid is simpler and more directly than the dynamical method.Comment: 18page
MENCARI KEBERKAHAN DI KELENTENG TRIDARMA GIE HAP BIO KOMUNIKASI RITUAL DALAM TRADISI FANG SHENG 方生

Training Students for Critical Thinking in an Electrical Engineering Core Course
Analysis and Design of Control Systems is a core course in most Electrical Engineering programs in the United States. This course is the first course that provides a systemic view of engineering designs and links classroom knowledge to real-world applications. Training students for critical thinking (CT) skills in this class is essential to their career success. However, a high D and F grades and withdraw (DFW) rate has been observed in this course for years. The goal of this study is to redesign the course components to integrate critical thinking training into classroom activities and reform students’ habits in problem-solving. The new course components include a series of lectures on cognition, critical thinking, examples of famous engineering projects with critical thinking, and decomposition of critical thinking skills in classroom examples. Evaluation of the new course module was conducted based on critical thinking assessment test, two student surveys through the semester, three classroom observations, and students’ performance comparing against an untrained control group in the previous semester. Our results illustrated an effective way to improve critical thinking with this training module.Cockrell School of Engineerin
Labour Market Outcomes and Skills Acquisition of High-School Dropouts
We utilize an instrumental variable approach to analyse the effect that dropping out of high school has on 17 outcomes pertaining to wages, employment and subsequent skill acquisition for youths. Our analysis is based on the older cohort of the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) for 2003, an ideal data set because it contains a rich array of outcome measures and their observable determinants as well as variables for instrumenting the dropout indicator (based on a link to the 1999 data). Our analysis indicates that dropouts have poorer wage and employment outcomes, and they do not make up for their lack of education through additional skill acquisition and training. The analysis thereby suggests that policies to curb dropping out could have both desirable efficiency effects (high returns) as well as distributional effects (high returns to otherwise more disadvantaged groups) and potential social spillover affects.Education, Training, Youth, Labour Market Outcomes
Web damage during prey capture in Hyptiotes paradoxus (C.L.KOCH 1834) (Uloboridae)
H. paradoxus - well known for its characteristic triangular web - has frequently been described to always completely collapse its web when catching prey. The aim of the present article is to show that this is not the case, and to discuss how the myth of the obligate complete collapse of the web has arisen and why it survived so well.
Iron-based layered superconductor LaOFFeAs: an antiferromagnetic semimetal
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaOFFeAs
through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find
that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic
semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of
located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore
this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi
surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed
superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a new
superconductivity mechanism, mediated by the spin fluctuations. An abrupt
change on the Hall measurement is further predicted for the parent compound
LaOFeAs.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
