Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting, Pyramidal Structure And Political Interference: Evidence From China

This paper attempts to investigate the relation between pyramidal structure and corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting quality and the effect of political interference on the relation. Based on 1388 Chinese A-share listed firms during 2010-2012, this paper demonstrates that the separation between control and ownership rights is significantly and positively related to the CSR reporting quality in the state-owned firms (SOFs), while negatively related to the CSR reporting quality in the non-state-owned firms (NSOFs). Results also indicate that the pyramidal layer between the bottom firms and their top ultimate owners is negatively related to CSR reporting quality, particularly significant for the NSOFs. Our research enriches the corporate governance literature by giving insights into the mechanism of pyramidal structure in corporate reporting, and extends the understanding of political interference in the CSR field. This study has public policy implications for China as well as a number of other countries in the Asia–Pacific region.

Characterization of the residual stresses in spray-formed steels using neutron diffraction

    Get PDF
Neutron diffraction was used to characterize the residual stresses in an as-sprayed tube-shaped steel preform. The measured residual stress distributions were compared with those simulated using finite element method by taking into account the effects of the thermal history, porosity and different phases of the sprayed preform. The porosity was measured using X-ray microcomputed tomography. The study revealed for the first time the correlation between the distribution of porosity and residual stress developed in the as-sprayed preform

A set of exactly solvable Ising models with half-odd-integer spin

We present a set of exactly solvable Ising models, with half-odd-integer spin-S on a square-type lattice including a quartic interaction term in the Hamiltonian. The particular properties of the mixed lattice, associated with mixed half-odd-integer spin-(S,1/2) and only nearest-neighbour interaction, allow us to map this system either onto a purely spin-1/2 lattice or onto a purely spin-S lattice. By imposing the condition that the mixed half-odd-integer spin-(S,1/2) lattice must have an exact solution, we found a set of exact solutions that satisfy the {\it free fermion} condition of the eight vertex model. The number of solutions for a general half-odd-integer spin-S is given by S+1/2S+1/2. Therefore we conclude that this transformation is equivalent to a simple spin transformation which is independent of the coordination number
