Assessment of β-D-Glucosidase Activity from Two Typical Strains of the Lactic Acid Bacteria, Oenococcus oeni, in China
β-D-glucosidase (βG) is one of the most interesting glycosidases for the hydrolysis of glycoconjugatedprecursors to release active aromatic compounds in musts and wines. Oenococcus oeni strains SD-2a and31MBR are widely used in Chinese wines to reduce the acidity. In the present study, the βG activity of thetwo strains was localised and partially characterised using synthetic substrate. The activity occurred inwhole cells, sonication supernatants and debris, but not in the culture supernatants for both strains. Wholecells of strain SD-2a possessed greater βG activity, while strain 31MBR showed higher enzyme activity inthe sonication supernatants. Strain 31MBR exhibited higher total enzyme activity than strain SD-2a. Theoptimum temperatures for βG from the two strains were 40ºС at pH 3.5 and 50ºС at pH 5.0, respectively.Ethanol at low concentrations had a positive effect on βG activity in both strains, while a wine-like pH (3.5)decreased the enzyme activity to a great extent. Whole cells of strain SD-2a showed the highest activityamong all samples tested under wine-like conditions. Thus, strain SD-2a proved to have potential foraroma improvement in winemaking

SNP rs1533428 at 2p16.3 as a marker for late-onset primary open-angle glaucoma
Purpose: To investigate the associations between gene variants in cholesterol 24S-hydroxylase (CYP46A1), LIM homeobox transcription factor 1-beta (LMX1B), plexin domain containing 2 (PLXDC2), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), transmembrane and tetratricopeptide repeat containing 2 (TMTC2), zona pellucida glycoprotein 4 (ZP4), chromosome 2p16.3, and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: We studied 462 POAG patients and 577 controls from three cohorts (Hong Kong, Shantou, and Beijing, China). Twelve single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped in the Hong Kong cohort using TaqMan genotyping assay. Significant associations were validated in the Shantou and Beijing cohorts. Results: Association of POAG with TLR4 rs7037117, in a recessive model, was identified in the Hong Kong and Shantou cohorts (both southern Chinese, =0.0019) but not the Beijing cohort (northern Chinese). rs1533428 at chromosome 2p16.3 showed a consistent trend of age-specific association in all three cohorts. Genotypes TT + CT conferred a 2.16 fold of significantly increased risk to late-onset POAG (=0.00025), but no significant risk to POAG of younger ages of onset in the combined cohort. A joint effect was found between rs7037117 and rs1533428, with carriers of both higher-risk genotypes having a 4.53 fold of increased disease risk (p=0.00028). Conclusions: Our study reveals discrepant association patterns of 12 candidate SNPs in 7 genes/loci with POAG in Chinese, provides positive replications for POAG markers rs1533428 at 2p16.3 and TLR4 rs7037117, and suggests that rs1533428 is a putative risk variant for late-onset POAG. The identification of an age-specific association between rs1533428 and late-onset POAG highlights a new genotype-phenotype association in POAG. Further studies are warranted to confirm the age-specific association
Manifestation of photonic band structure in small clusters of spherical particles
We study the formation of the photonic band structure in small clusters of
dielectric spheres. The first signs of the band structure, an attribute of an
infinite crystal, can appear for clusters of 5 particles. Density of resonant
states of a cluster of 32 spheres may exhibit a well defined structure similar
to the density of electromagnetic states of the infinite photonic crystal. The
resonant mode structure of finite-size aggregates is shown to be insensitive to
random displacements of particles off the perfect lattice positions as large as
half-radius of the particle. The results were obtained by an efficient
numerical method, which relates the density of resonant states to the the
scattering coefficients of the electromagnetic scattering problem. Generalized
multisphere Mie (GMM) solution was used to obtain scattering matrix elements.
These results are important to miniature photonic crystal design as well as
understanding of light localization in dense random media.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Multifractal Analysis of inhomogeneous Bernoulli products
We are interested to the multifractal analysis of inhomogeneous Bernoulli
products which are also known as coin tossing measures. We give conditions
ensuring the validity of the multifractal formalism for such measures. On
another hand, we show that these measures can have a dense set of phase
transitions
Lyapunov spectrum of asymptotically sub-additive potentials
For general asymptotically sub-additive potentials (resp. asymptotically
additive potentials) on general topological dynamical systems, we establish
some variational relations between the topological entropy of the level sets of
Lyapunov exponents, measure-theoretic entropies and topological pressures in
this general situation. Most of our results are obtained without the assumption
of the existence of unique equilibrium measures or the differentiability of
pressure functions. Some examples are constructed to illustrate the
irregularity and the complexity of multifractal behaviors in the sub-additive
case and in the case that the entropy map that is not upper-semi continuous.Comment: 44 page
Prunella vulgaris: A comprehensive review of chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and clinical applications.
Prunella vulgaris (PV) is a perennial herb belonging to the Labiate family and is widely distributed in northeastern Asian countries such as Korea, Japan, and China. It is reported to display diverse biological activities including anti-microbial, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammation as determined by in vitro or in vivo studies. So far, about 200 compounds have been isolated from PV plant and majority of these have been characterized mainly as triterpenoids, sterols and flavonoids, followed by coumarins, phenylpropanoids, polysaccharides and volatile oils. This review summarizes and analyzes the current knowledge on the chemical constituents, pharmacological activities, mechanisms of action and clinical applications of the PV plant including its potential as a future medicinal plant. Although some of the chemical constituents of the PV plant and their mechanism of action have been investigated the biological activities of many of these remain unknown and further clinical trials are required to further enhance its reputation as a medicinal plant
