Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Nursing and Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) have created a unique partnership in which brand new undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students are completing their first clinical rotation on VCUHS’s Secure Care Unit (SCU). The VCU School of Nursing has had a total of 50 beginner nursing students rotate through a semester long clinical on the SCU over the past three years

Realizing Empathy and Expertise through Accounts Lived (REEAL)-An Integrated Learning Experience

Undergraduate nursing students have historically learned to focus on the clinical and technical components of patient care. There is an increasing body of literature about the importance of incorporating empathy into healthcare curricula, and various techniques, such as role modelling, have been utilized. The increasing complexity and demands on nurses, and other healthcare providers, in today\u27s healthcare system have led to a higher incidence of burnout and turnover. It is recognized that patients have felt the effects of this burnout in that they cite feeling a lack of connection and empathy from their clinical providers. We have sought to create a new learning experience that integrates traditional teaching methods with real patients’ lived experiences

Scientific Argumentation as a Foundation for the Design of Inquiry-Based Science Instruction

Despite the attention that inquiry has received in science education research and policy, a coherent means for implementing inquiry in the classroom has been missing [1]. In recent research, scientific argumentation has received increasing attention for its role in science and in science education [2]. In this article, we propose that organizing a unit of instruction around building a scientific argument can bring inquiry practices together in the classroom in a coherent way. We outline a framework for argumentation, focusing on arguments that are central to science—arguments for the best explanation. We then use this framework as the basis for a set of design principles for developing a sequence of inquiry-based learning activities that support students in the construction of a scientific argument. We show that careful analysis of the argument that students are expected to build provides designers with a foundation for selecting resources and designing supports for scientific inquiry. Furthermore, we show that creating multiple opportunities for students to critique and refine their explanations through evidence-based argumentation fosters opportunities for critical thinking, while building science knowledge and knowledge of the nature of science

IMPACTS OF PRICING POLICIES ON SELECTED FINANCIAL OUTCOMES OF THE CATTLEMEN'S TEXAS LONGHORN BEEF COOPERATIVE, INC.

The impacts of meat pricing on selected financial results for the CattlemenÂ’'s Texas Longhorn Beef Cooperative, Inc. were investigated in a stochastic simulation model. Triangular price distributions for boxed beef and various carcasses categories were specified for each month and correlated, based on 2000 USDA carlot meat report data. Hot-carcass weights were also modeled as triangular distributions. At 5,000 head and with meat prices 12% over USDA prices the probability of net profits before taxes (NPBT) falling below 0was1.30 was 1.3%. At 10,000 head and payments 9% over USDA prices there was an 11.8% chance of NPBT falling below 0.Demand and Price Analysis,

Structural transformation and localization during simulated nanoindentation of a non-crystalline metal film

A simulation study demonstrates that localization can arise as the result of the breakdown of stable quasi-crystal-like atomic configurations. Samples produced at elevated quench rates and via more energetic processes contain a lower fraction of such configurations and exhibit significantly less pronounced localization and shorter spacing between bands. In the samples produced by the lowest quench rates localization is accompanied by the amorphization of material with initially quasi-crystal-like medium range order. This result is of particular significance in light of recent experimental evidence of local quasi-crystal order in the most stable of the bulk metallic glasses.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
