Results from the CASTLES Survey of Gravitational Lenses
We show that most gravitational lenses lie on the passively evolving
fundamental plane for early-type galaxies. For burst star formation models (1
Gyr of star formation, then quiescence) in low Omega_0 cosmologies, the stellar
populations of the lens galaxies must have formed at z_f > 2. Typical lens
galaxies contain modest amounts of patchy extinction, with a median
differential extinction for the optical (radio) selected lenses of E(B-V) =
0.04 (0.07) mag. The dust can be used to determine both extinction laws and
lens redshifts. For example, the z_l=0.96 elliptical lens in MG0414+0534 has an
R_V=1.7 +/- 0.1 mean extinction law. Arc and ring images of the quasar and AGN
source host galaxies are commonly seen in NICMOS H band observations. The hosts

The Rewards of Patience: An 822 Day Time Delay in the Gravitational Lens SDSS J1004+4112
We present 107 new epochs of optical monitoring data for the four brightest
images of the gravitational lens SDSS J1004+4112 observed between October 2006
and June 2007. Combining this data with the previously obtained light curves,
we determine the time delays between images A, B and C. We confirm our previous
measurement finding that A leads B by dt_BA=40.6+-1.8 days, and find that image
C leads image A by dt_CA=821.6+-2.1 days. The lower limit on the remaining
delay is that image D lags image A by dt_AD>1250 days. Based on the
microlensing of images A and B we estimate that the accretion disk size at a
rest wavelength of 2300 angstrom is 10^{14.8+-0.3} cm for a disk inclination of
cos{i}=1/2, which is consistent with the microlensing disk size-black hole mass
correlation function given our estimate of the black hole mass from the MgII
line width of logM_BH/M_sun=8.44+-0.14. The long delays allow us to fill in the
seasonal gaps and assemble a continuous, densely sampled light curve spanning
5.7 years whose variability implies a structure function with a logarithmic
slope of gamma = 0.35+-0.02. As C is the leading image, sharp features in the C
light curve can be intensively studied 2.3 years later in the A/B pair,
potentially allowing detailed reverberation mapping studies of a quasar at

Density of states in an optical speckle potential
We study the single particle density of states of a one-dimensional speckle
potential, which is correlated and non-Gaussian. We consider both the repulsive
and the attractive cases. The system is controlled by a single dimensionless
parameter determined by the mass of the particle, the correlation length and
the average intensity of the field. Depending on the value of this parameter,
the system exhibits different regimes, characterized by the localization
properties of the eigenfunctions. We calculate the corresponding density of
states using the statistical properties of the speckle potential. We find good
agreement with the results of numerical simulations.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, revtex
Satellite material contaminant optical properties
The Air Force Wright Research and Development Center and the Arnold Engineering Development Center are continuing a program for measuring optical effects of satellite material outgassing products on cryo-optic surfaces. Presented here are infrared (4000 to 700 cm(-1)) transmittance data for contaminant films condensed on a 77 K geranium window. From the transmittance data, the contaminant film refractive and absorptive indices (n, k) were derived using an analytical thin-film interference model with a nonlinear least-squares algorithm. To date 19 materials have been studied with the optical contents determined for 13 of those. The materials include adhesives, paints, composites, films, and lubricants. This program is continuing and properties for other materials will be available in the future
