Synergisms between pharmacological agents and endogenous neurotransmitters are familiar and frequent. The present review describes the experimental evidence for interactions between neuropharmacological compounds and the classes of weak magnetic fields that might be encountered in our daily environments. Whereas drugs mediate their effects through specific spatial (molecular) structures, magnetic fields mediate their effects through specific temporal patterns. Very weak (microT range) physiologically-patterned magnetic fields synergistically interact with drugs to strongly potentiate effects that have classically involved opiate, cholinergic, dopaminergic, serotonergic, and nitric oxide pathways. The combinations of the appropriately patterned magnetic fields and specific drugs can evoke changes that are several times larger than those evoked by the drugs alone. These novel synergisms provide a challenge for a future within an electromagnetic, technological world. They may also reveal fundamental, common physical mechanisms by which magnetic fields and chemical reactions affect the organism from the level of fundamental particles to the entire living system

Expression of galectin-3 is associated with sarcoma progression, invasion and metastasis. Here we determined the role of extracellular galectin-3 on migration of sarcoma cells on laminin-111. Cell lines from methylcholanthrene-induced sarcomas from both wild type and galectin-3â/â mice were established. Despite the presence of similar levels of laminin-binding integrins on the cell surface, galectin-3â/â sarcoma cells were more adherent and less migratory than galectin-3+/+ sarcoma cells on laminin-111. When galectin-3 was transiently expressed in galectin-3â/â sarcoma cells, it inhibited cell adhesion and stimulated the migratory response to laminin in a carbohydrate-dependent manner. Extracellular galectin-3 led to the recruitment of SHP-2 phosphatase to focal adhesion plaques, followed by a decrease in the amount of phosphorylated FAK and phospho-paxillin in the lamellipodia of migrating cells. The promigratory activity of extracellular galectin-3 was inhibitable by wortmannin, implicating the activation of a PI-3 kinase dependent pathway in the galectin-3 triggered disruption of adhesion plaques, leading to sarcoma cell migration on laminin-111

The CMS core software is publicly available on GitHub (https://github.com/cms-sw/cmssw).In July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider announced the observation of a Higgs boson at a mass of around 125âgigaelectronvolts. Ten years later, and with the data corresponding to the production of a 30-times larger number of Higgs bosons, we have learnt much more about the properties of the Higgs boson. The CMS experiment has observed the Higgs boson in numerous fermionic and bosonic decay channels, established its spinâparity quantum numbers, determined its mass and measured its production cross-sections in various modes. Here the CMS Collaboration reports the most up-to-date combination of results on the properties of the Higgs boson, including the most stringent limit on the cross-section for the production of a pair of Higgs bosons, on the basis of data from protonâproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13âteraelectronvolts. Within the uncertainties, all these observations are compatible with the predictions of the standard model of elementary particle physics. Much evidence points to the fact that the standard model is a low-energy approximation of a more comprehensive theory. Several of the standard model issues originate in the sector of Higgs boson physics. Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, detailed studies of its properties have been ongoing. Besides its mass, its widthârelated to its lifetimeâis an important parameter. One way to determine this quantity is to measure its off-shell production, where the Higgs boson mass is far away from its nominal value, and relating it to its on-shell production, where the mass is close to the nominal value. Here we report evidence for such off-shell contributions to the production cross-section of two Z bosons with data from the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We constrain the total rate of the off-shell Higgs boson contribution beyond the Z boson pair production threshold, relative to its standard model expectation, to the interval [0.0061,â2.0] at the 95% confidence level. The scenario with no off-shell contribution is excluded at a p-value of 0.0003 (3.6 standard deviations). We measure the width of the Higgs boson as ÎH=3.2+2.4â1.7MeV, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 4.1âMeV. In addition, we set constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to W and Z boson pairs

A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs
bosons (H1) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in
f
inal states with small missing transverse momentum. A data
set of LHC pp collisions collected with the CMS detector
at âs = 13TeV and corresponding to an integrated lumi
nosity of 138fbâ1 is used. The search targets events where
both H1 bosons decay into bÂŻb pairs that are reconstructed
as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evi
dence is found for an excess of events beyond the back
ground expectations of the standard model (SM). Results
from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal super
symmetric extension of the SM, where a âsinglinoâ of small
mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can pre
dominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like H1
andasinglino-likeneutralinoofsmalltransversemomentum.
Upperlimitsaresetontheproductofthesquarkorgluinopair
production cross section and the square of the bÂŻb branching
fraction of the H1 in a benchmark model containing almost
mass-degenerategluinosandlight-flavoursquarks.Underthe
assumption of an SM-like H1 â bÂŻb branching fraction, H1
bosonswithmassesintherange40â120GeVarisingfromthe
decays of squarks or gluinos with a mass of 1200â2500GeV
are excluded at 95% confidence level.SCOA
