Box representations of embedded graphs
A -box is the cartesian product of intervals of and a
-box representation of a graph is a representation of as the
intersection graph of a set of -boxes in . It was proved by
Thomassen in 1986 that every planar graph has a 3-box representation. In this
paper we prove that every graph embedded in a fixed orientable surface, without
short non-contractible cycles, has a 5-box representation. This directly
implies that there is a function , such that in every graph of genus , a
set of at most vertices can be removed so that the resulting graph has a
5-box representation. We show that such a function can be made linear in
. Finally, we prove that for any proper minor-closed class ,
there is a constant such that every graph of
without cycles of length less than has a 3-box representation,
which is best possible.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures - revised versio

X-ray total scattering study of regular and magic-size nanoclusters of cadmium sulphide
Four kinds of magic-size CdS clusters and two different regular CdS quantum dots have been studied by x-ray total scattering technique and pair distribution function method. Results for the regular CdS quantum dots could be modelled as a mixed phase of atomic structures based on the two bulk crystalline phases, which is interpreted as representing the effects of stacking disorder. However, the results for the magic-size clusters were significantly different. On one hand, the short-range features in the pair distribution function reflect the bulk, indicating that these structures are based on the same tetrahedral coordination found in the bulk phases (and therefore excluding new types of structures such as cage-like arrangements of atoms). But on the other hand, the longer- range atomic structure clearly does not reflect the layer structures found in the bulk and the regular quantum dots. We compare the effects of two ligands, phenylacetic acid and oleic acid, showing that in two cases the ligand has little effect on the atomic structure of the magic-size nanocluster and in another it has a significant effect

Natural history of spontaneous aortic intramural hematoma progression: Six years follow-up with cardiovascular magnetic resonance
We described a 6 years follow-up of a spontaneous aortic intramural hematoma (IMH) with cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) examination. Since multiple factors may play roles in the natural history of IMH, the patient experienced the course of progression, which included hematoma absorption, ulcer-like lesion, aneurysm and limited dissection. The initial and follow-up CMR examination included 3D CE MRA and non-enhanced "bright blood" pulse sequence. The inherent advantage of outstanding contrast with plain scan, which shorten the scan time and avoid potential risk of contrast agent, might make the fast gradient echo sequence as an alternative method when following stable IMH
Quantitative chemometric phenotyping of three-dimensional liver organoids by Raman spectral imaging
Confocal Raman spectral imaging (RSI) enables high-content, label-free visualization of a wide range of molecules in biological specimens without sample preparation. However, reliable quantification of the deconvoluted spectra is needed. Here we develop an integrated bioanalytical methodology, qRamanomics, to qualify RSI as a tissue phantom calibrated tool for quantitative spatial chemotyping of major classes of biomolecules. Next, we apply qRamanomics to fixed 3D liver organoids generated from stem-cell-derived or primary hepatocytes to assess specimen variation and maturity. We then demonstrate the utility of qRamanomics for identifying biomolecular response signatures from a panel of liver-altering drugs, probing drug-induced compositional changes in 3D organoids followed by in situ monitoring of drug metabolism and accumulation. Quantitative chemometric phenotyping constitutes an important step in developing quantitative label-free interrogation of 3D biological specimens
