From B Modes to Quantum Gravity and Unification of Forces
It is commonly anticipated that gravity is subject to the standard principles
of quantum mechanics. Yet some (including Einstein) have questioned that
presumption, whose empirical basis is weak. Indeed, recently Freeman Dyson has
emphasized that no conventional experiment is capable of detecting individual
gravitons. However, as we describe, if inflation occurred, the Universe, by
acting as an ideal graviton amplifier, affords such access. It produces a
classical signal, in the form of macroscopic gravitational waves, in response
to spontaneous (not induced) emission of gravitons. Thus recent BICEP2
observations of polarization in the cosmic microwave background will, if
confirmed, provide empirical evidence for the quantization of gravity. Their
details also support quantitative ideas concerning the unification of strong,
electromagnetic, and weak forces, and of all these with gravity.Comment: 4 pages, no figures. v2: minor typos corrected, reference added. v3:

Interview on \u3cem\u3eThe Black Box Society\u3c/em\u3e
Hidden algorithms drive decisions at major Silicon Valley and Wall Street firms. Thanks to automation, those firms can approve credit, rank websites, and make myriad other decisions instantaneously. But what are the costs of their methods? And what exactly are they doing with their digital profiles of us?
Leaks, whistleblowers, and legal disputes have shed new light on corporate surveillance and the automated judgments it enables. Self-serving and reckless behavior is surprisingly common, and easy to hide in code protected by legal and real secrecy. Even after billions of dollars of fines have been levied, underfunded regulators may have only scratched the surface of troublingly monopolistic and exploitative practices.
Drawing on the work of social scientists, attorneys, and technologists, The Black Box Society offers a bold new account of the political economy of big data. Data-driven corporations play an ever larger role in determining opportunity and risk. But they depend on automated judgments that may be wrong, biased, or destructive. Their black boxes endanger all of us. Faulty data, invalid assumptions, and defective models can’t be corrected when they are hidden.
Frank Pasquale exposes how powerful interests abuse secrecy for profit and explains ways to rein them in. Demanding transparency is only the first step. An intelligible society would assure that key decisions of its most important firms are fair, nondiscriminatory, and open to criticism. Silicon Valley and Wall Street need to accept as much accountability as they impose on others.
In this interview with Lawrence Joseph, Frank Pasquale describes the aims and methods of the book
Using Cosmology to Establish the Quantization of Gravity
While many aspects of general relativity have been tested, and general
principles of quantum dynamics demand its quantization, there is no direct
evidence for that. It has been argued that development of detectors sensitive
to individual gravitons is unlikely, and perhaps impossible. We argue here,
however, that measurement of polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background
due to a long wavelength stochastic background of gravitational waves from
Inflation in the Early Universe would firmly establish the quantization of
gravity.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, revised in response to referee's reports.

Almost rolling motion: An investigation of rolling grooved cylinders
We examine the dynamics of cylinders that are grooved to form N teeth for
rolling motion down an inclined plane. The grooved cylinders are experimentally
found to reach a terminal velocity. This result can be explained by the
inclusion of inelastic processes which occur whenever a tooth hits the surface.
The fraction of the angular velocity that is lost during an inelastic collision
is phenomenologically found to be proportional to
(2*sin^2*pi/N)-(alpha*sin^3*pi/N), and the method of least squares is used to
find the constant alpha=0.98. The adjusted theoretical results for the time of
rolling as well as for terminal velocity are found to be in good agreement with
the experimental results.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures http://link.aip.org/link/?AJPIAS/66/202/
Cultivating Lifelong Donors: Stewardship and the Fundraising Pyramid
This handbook helps nonprofits build long-term giving programs that span the entire supporter lifecycle, from engagement through the end of life. It highlights strategies for engaging new supporters online, investigates the characteristics of loyal donors, examines the importance of developing personal relationships with transitional giving prospects, and discusses donor cultivation
Visual enhancements in pick-and-place tasks: Human operators controlling a simulated cylindrical manipulator
A teleoperation simulator was constructed with vector display system, joysticks, and a simulated cylindrical manipulator, in order to quantitatively evaluate various display conditions. The first of two experiments conducted investigated the effects of perspective parameter variations on human operators' pick-and-place performance, using a monoscopic perspective display. The second experiment involved visual enhancements of the monoscopic perspective display, by adding a grid and reference lines, by comparison with visual enhancements of a stereoscopic display; results indicate that stereoscopy generally permits superior pick-and-place performance, but that monoscopy nevertheless allows equivalent performance when defined with appropriate perspective parameter values and adequate visual enhancements
Comparison of Results Obtained from Flight Tests and Simulated Tests of a Digital Electronic Engine Control System in an F-15 Airplane
Substantial benefits of a full authority digital electronic engine control on an air breathing engine were demonstrated repeatedly in simulation studies, ground engine tests, and engine altitude test facilities. A digital engine electronic control system showed improvements in efficiency, performance, and operation. An additional benefit of full authority digital controls is the capability of detecting and correcting failures and providing engine health diagnostics
