Feasibility Assessment of Direct Marketing Strategies: The Case of Vegetable Farmer Clusters in Marilog, Davao City, Philippines
In the Philippines, majority of the vegetable farmers are categorized as small and are often disconnected from markets, which lessen their opportunities to sell at a profit. This study focused on the feasibility assessment of direct marketing strategies, specifically the farmersâ market and direct sales to institutional users. A random survey was conducted on 110 residents of the first district of Davao City where consumersâ willingness to shop at farmersâ markets was analyzed using Probit regression. On the other hand, case study analyses were conducted to assess the farmersâ market event in a university and the direct sales strategy to institutional user, the food service provider of a government agency. Costs and benefits of each direct marketing channel were also determined. The farmer groups PAFA and SAFE are the producers and sellers of vegetables for this research. The study revealed that majority of the respondents are willing to participate in a farmersâ market if one exists and they perceived it as a source of fresh yet affordable vegetables. Moreover, most of them believed that participating in a farmersâ market is a form of social responsibility. The institutional buyer mainly benefited through significant reduction in marketing costs. Alternatively, the farmers perceived direct marketing as opportunities for learning and maximizing economic gains through diversifying its market portfolio and securing a market for their produce. The results of the study indicate the feasibility of direct marketing strategies to be carried out by the vegetable farmer clusters, which are PAFA and SAFE
Coherent states for compact Lie groups and their large-N limits
The first two parts of this article surveys results related to the
heat-kernel coherent states for a compact Lie group K. I begin by reviewing the
definition of the coherent states, their resolution of the identity, and the
associated Segal-Bargmann transform. I then describe related results including
connections to geometric quantization and (1+1)-dimensional Yang--Mills theory,
the associated coherent states on spheres, and applications to quantum gravity.
The third part of this article summarizes recent work of mine with Driver and
Kemp on the large-N limit of the Segal--Bargmann transform for the unitary
group U(N). A key result is the identification of the leading-order large-N
behavior of the Laplacian on "trace polynomials."Comment: Submitted to the proceeding of the CIRM conference, "Coherent states

Serological survey for mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in free-living wild boars from Campos Gerais region, ParanĂĄ, Brasil.
The south region of Brazil was responsible for 80.3% of total pork meat export in the country in 2015 (2), with the state of ParanĂĄ accountable for 21% of the total pork meat production in that year. Pig farming represented 5.7% of the agricultural gross income of the state in 2016, and the Campos Gerais region accounted for 13.2% of that amount (2). Wild boars are the result of crossbreeding between boars (Sus scrofa scrofa) and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). The total population of free-living wild boars in Brazil is unknown (11), but sightings are common in the crop fields and near livestock farms of different regions of ParanĂĄ state, including in Campos Gerais (9). The health status of pig herds is important in terms of maintenance and growth of pork production and exports and there are evidences that domestic pigs and wild boars share vulnerabilities in certain viral and bacterial pathogen infections (12). Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhyo) is a bacterial pathogen that causes porcine enzootic pneumonia, an economically important disease that affects both domestic pigs and wild boars. Mhyo was first isolated in 1965, simultaneously in the United Kingdom (UK) and in the United States of America (USA) (3; 7). Economic losses related to this pathogen and mycoplasmal pneumonia in pig herds are associated with decreased feed efficiency, reduced average of the daily weight gain, and increased medication costs. Thus, knowing the health status of free-living wild boars in the regards of this pathogen is important for the biosecurity of the pork production. The aim of this study was to investigate antibodies against Mhyo in serum samples of free-living wild boars in Campos Gerais region
Protocol for the establishment of a serine integrase-based platform for functional validation of genetic switch controllers in eukaryotic cells.
Serine integrases (Ints) are a family of site-specific recombinases (SSRs) encoded by some bacteriophages to integrate their genetic material into the genome of a host. Their ability to rearrange DNA sequences in different ways including inversion, excision, or insertion with no help from endogenous molecular machinery, confers important biotechnological value as genetic editing tools with high host plasticity. Despite advances in their use in prokaryotic cells, only a few Ints are currently used as gene editors in eukaryotes, partly due to the functional loss and cytotoxicity presented by some candidates in more complex organisms. To help expand the number of Ints available for the assembly of more complex multifunctional circuits in eukaryotic cells, this protocol describes a platform for the assembly and functional screening of serine-integrase-based genetic switches designed to control gene expression by directional inversions of DNA sequence orientation. The system consists of two sets of plasmids, an effector module and a reporter module, both sets assembled with regulatory components (as promoter and terminator regions) appropriate for expression in mammals, including humans, and plants. The complete method involves plasmid design, DNA delivery, testing and both molecular and phenotypical assessment of results. This platform presents a suitable workflow for the identification and functional validation of new tools for the genetic regulation and reprogramming of organisms with importance in different fields, from medical applications to crop enhancement, as shown by the initial results obtained. This protocol can be completed in 4 weeks for mammalian cells or up to 8 weeks for plant cells, considering cell culture or plant growth time.Na publicação: Eduardo O. Melo; Daniela M. The Relationship between Regular Sports Participation and Vigilance in Male and Female Adolescents
The present study investigated the relationship between regular sport participation (soccer) and vigilance performance. Two groups of male and female adolescents differentiated in terms of their sport participation (athletes, n = 39, and non-athletes, n = 36) took part in the study. In one session, participants performed the Leger Multi-stage fitness test to estimate their aerobic fitness level. In the other session, participants completed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) to evaluate their vigilance performance. Perceived arousal prior to the task and motivation toward the task were also measured in the PVT session. The results revealed that athletes had better cardiovascular fitness and showed better performance in the PVT. However, correlation analyses did not show any significant relationship between cardiovascular fitness and performance in the PVT. Athletes showed larger scores in motivation and perceived arousal measures with respect to non-athletes, although, once again, these variables were not correlated with PVT performance. Gender differences were observed only in the Leger test, with males showing greater fitness level than females. The major outcome of this research points to a positive relationship between regular sport participation and vigilance during adolescence. This relationship did not seem to be influenced by gender, perceived arousal, motivation toward the task or cardiovascular fitness. We discuss our results in terms of the different hypotheses put forward in the literature to explain the relationship between physical activity and cognitive functioning. This research was supported by a Spanish

Extraordinary room-temperature photoluminescence in WS2 monolayers
Individual monolayers of metal dichalcogenides are atomically thin
two-dimensional crystals with attractive physical properties different from
their bulk layered counterpart. Here we describe the direct synthesis of WS2
monolayers with triangular morphologies and strong room-temperature
photoluminescence (PL). Bulk WS2 does not present PL due to its indirect band
gap nature. The edges of these monolayers exhibit PL signals with extraordinary
intensity, around 25 times stronger than the platelets center. The structure
and composition of the platelet edges appear to be critical for the PL
enhancement effect. Electron diffraction revealed that platelets present zigzag
edges, while first-principles calculations indicate that sulfur-rich zigzag WS2
edges possess metallic edge states, which might tailor the optical response
reported here. These novel 2D nanoscale light sources could find diverse
applications including the fabrication of flexible/transparent/low-energy
optoelectronic devices
