The Galactic Center Black Hole Laboratory
The super-massive 4 million solar mass black hole Sagittarius~A* (SgrA*)
shows flare emission from the millimeter to the X-ray domain. A detailed
analysis of the infrared light curves allows us to address the accretion
phenomenon in a statistical way. The analysis shows that the near-infrared
flare amplitudes are dominated by a single state power law, with the low states
in SgrA* limited by confusion through the unresolved stellar background. There
are several dusty objects in the immediate vicinity of SgrA*. The source G2/DSO
is one of them. Its nature is unclear. It may be comparable to similar stellar
dusty sources in the region or may consist predominantly of gas and dust. In
this case a particularly enhanced accretion activity onto SgrA* may be expected
in the near future. Here the interpretation of recent data and ongoing

Comparative mortality of hemodialysis patients at for-profit and not-for-profit dialysis facilities in the United States, 1998 to 2003: A retrospective analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Concern lingers that dialysis therapy at for-profit (versus not-for-profit) hemodialysis facilities in the United States may be associated with higher mortality, even though 4 of every 5 contemporary dialysis patients receive therapy in such a setting.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Our primary objective was to compare the mortality hazards of patients initiating hemodialysis at for-profit and not-for-profit centers in the United States between 1998 and 2003. For-profit status of dialysis facilities was determined after subjects received 6 months of dialysis therapy, and mean follow-up was 1.7 years.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the study population (<it>N </it>= 205,076), 79.9% were dialyzed in for-profit facilities after 6 months of dialysis therapy. Dialysis at for-profit facilities was associated with higher urea reduction ratios, hemoglobin levels (including levels above 12 and 13 g/dL [120 and 130 g/L]), epoetin doses, and use of intravenous iron, and less use of blood transfusions and lower proportions of patients on the transplant waiting-list (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Patients dialyzed at for-profit and at not-for-profit facilities had similar mortality risks (adjusted hazards ratio 1.02, 95% CI 0.99–1.06, <it>P </it>= 0.143).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>While hemodialysis treatment at for-profit and not-for-profit dialysis facilities is associated with different patterns of clinical benchmark achievement, mortality rates are similar.</p

Molybdenum (Mo) increases endogenous phenolics, proline and photosynthetic pigments and the phytoremediation potential of the industrially important plant Ricinus communis L. for removal of cadmium from contaminated soil.
Cadmium (Cd) in agricultural soil negatively affects crops yield and compromises food safety. Remediation of polluted soil is necessary for the re-establishment of sustainable agriculture and to prevent hazards to human health and environmental pollution. Phytoremediation is a promising technology for decontamination of polluted soil. The present study investigated the effect of molybdenum (Mo) (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ppm) on endogenous production of total phenolics and free proline, plant biomass and photosynthetic pigments in Ricinus communis plants grown in Cd (25, 50 and 100 ppm) contaminated soils and the potential for Cd phytoextraction. Mo was applied via seed soaking, soil addition and foliar spray. Foliar sprays significantly increased plant biomass, Cd accumulation and bioconcentration. Phenolic concentrations showed significantly positive correlations with Cd accumulation in roots (R 2 = 0.793, 0.807 and 0.739) and leaves (R 2 = 0.707, 721 and 0.866). Similarly, proline was significantly positively correlated with Cd accumulation in roots (R 2 = 0.668, 0.694 and 0.673) and leaves (R 2 = 0.831, 0.964 and 0.930). Foliar application was found to be the most effective way to deliver Mo in terms of increase in plant growth, Cd accumulation and production of phenolics and proline
Supernova remnants: the X-ray perspective
Supernova remnants are beautiful astronomical objects that are also of high
scientific interest, because they provide insights into supernova explosion
mechanisms, and because they are the likely sources of Galactic cosmic rays.
X-ray observations are an important means to study these objects.And in
particular the advances made in X-ray imaging spectroscopy over the last two
decades has greatly increased our knowledge about supernova remnants. It has
made it possible to map the products of fresh nucleosynthesis, and resulted in
the identification of regions near shock fronts that emit X-ray synchrotron
radiation.
In this text all the relevant aspects of X-ray emission from supernova
remnants are reviewed and put into the context of supernova explosion
properties and the physics and evolution of supernova remnants. The first half
of this review has a more tutorial style and discusses the basics of supernova
remnant physics and thermal and non-thermal X-ray emission. The second half
offers a review of the recent advances.The topics addressed there are core
collapse and thermonuclear supernova remnants, SN 1987A, mature supernova
remnants, mixed-morphology remnants, including a discussion of the recent
finding of overionization in some of them, and finally X-ray synchrotron
