    Towards a Universal Methodology for Performance Evaluation of Electrical Impedance Tomography Systems using Full Reference SNR

    This paper describes a simple and reproducible methodology towards a universal figure-of-merit (FoM) for evaluating the performance of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) systems using reconstructed images. Based on objective full-referencing and signal-to-noise ratio, the method provides a visually distinguishable hot-map and two new FoM factors, to address the issues where common electrical parameters are not directly related to the quality of EIT images. The paper describes the method with simulation results and develops a 16 electrode EIT system using an ASIC front-end for evaluation using the proposed method. The measured results show both visually and in terms of the proposed FoM factors, the impact on recorded EIT images with different current injection amplitudes

    Electrical Impedance Tomography for Biomedical Applications: Circuits and Systems Review

    There has been considerable interest in electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to provide low-cost, radiation-free, real-time and wearable means for physiological status monitoring. To be competitive with other well-established imaging modalities, it is important to understand the requirements of the specific application and determine a suitable system design. This paper presents an overview of EIT circuits and systems including architectures, current drivers, analog front-end and demodulation circuits, with emphasis on integrated circuit implementations. Commonly used circuit topologies are detailed, and tradeoffs are discussed to aid in choosing an appropriate design based on the application and system priorities. The paper also describes a number of integrated EIT systems for biomedical applications, as well as discussing current challenges and possible future directions

    An active microchannel neural interface with artifact reduction

    High-density neural electrodes in microchannel interfaces require in-situ amplification of the neural signals and rejection of high-voltage stimulus pulses leaking to the channel in order to adequately detect neural signals in the presence of concurrent stimulation. This paper presents the design of an active microchannel neural interface in 0.18 μm CMOS employing neural recording and stimulation. To reduce stimulus artifacts, a novel method is proposed that disconnects the recording module during concurrent channel stimulation and automatically applies detection and reduction of stimulus artifacts from adjacent channels using a tunable filter. Simulations show that the method provides at least 54 dB artifact attenuation

    Live Demonstration: Performance Evaluation of Electrical Impedance Tomography Systems using a Color-Coded Full Reference SNR Method

    A color-coded full reference signal-to-noise (FR-SNR) method is proposed as a simple and reproducible performance evaluation method for EIT systems. It will be demonstrated with a 16-electrode high-speed EIT system and a resistive phantom. The performance of the EIT system can be altered by artificially introducing non-ideal operating conditions such as low drive current, low ADC resolution, dc offset in the readout front-end and large electrode impedance. The performance under these conditions will be measured and displayed using the FR-SNR method

    Sample entropy analysis of EEG signals via artificial neural networks to model patients' consciousness level based on anesthesiologists experience.

    Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, as it can express the human brain's activities and reflect awareness, have been widely used in many research and medical equipment to build a noninvasive monitoring index to the depth of anesthesia (DOA). Bispectral (BIS) index monitor is one of the famous and important indicators for anesthesiologists primarily using EEG signals when assessing the DOA. In this study, an attempt is made to build a new indicator using EEG signals to provide a more valuable reference to the DOA for clinical researchers. The EEG signals are collected from patients under anesthetic surgery which are filtered using multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) method and analyzed using sample entropy (SampEn) analysis. The calculated signals from SampEn are utilized to train an artificial neural network (ANN) model through using expert assessment of consciousness level (EACL) which is assessed by experienced anesthesiologists as the target to train, validate, and test the ANN. The results that are achieved using the proposed system are compared to BIS index. The proposed system results show that it is not only having similar characteristic to BIS index but also more close to experienced anesthesiologists which illustrates the consciousness level and reflects the DOA successfully.This research is supported by the Center forDynamical Biomarkers and Translational Medicine, National Central University, Taiwan, which is sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology (Grant no.     Reproducibility and intraindividual variation over days in buccal cell DNA methylation of two asthma genes, interferon γ (IFNγ) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)

    The biological mechanisms responsible for the onset and exacerbation of asthma symptoms in children may involve the epigenetic regulation of inflammatory genes after environmental exposures. Using buccal cells, we hypothesized that DNA methylation in promoter regions of two asthma genes, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and interferon γ (IFNγ), can vary over several days. Repeat buccal samples were collected 4 to 7 days apart from 34 children participating in the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) birth cohort study. Several field duplicates (sequential collection of two samples in the field) and replicates (one sample pyrosequenced twice) also were collected to ensure consistency with collection and laboratory procedures. DNA methylation was assessed by pyrosequencing a PCR of bisulfite-treated DNA. We found that replicate and field duplicate samples were correlated strongly (r = 0.86 to 0.99, P < 0.05), while repeat samples demonstrated low within-subject correlations (r = 0.19 to 0.56, P = 0.06 to 0.30). Our data reveal DNA methylation as a dynamic epigenetic mechanism that can be accessed safely and reproducibly in an inner city pediatric cohort using non-invasive buccal swabs and pyrosequencing technology

    The sudden change phenomenon of quantum discord

    Even if the parameters determining a system's state are varied smoothly, the behavior of quantum correlations alike to quantum discord, and of its classical counterparts, can be very peculiar, with the appearance of non-analyticities in its rate of change. Here we review this sudden change phenomenon (SCP) discussing some important points related to it: Its uncovering, interpretations, and experimental verifications, its use in the context of the emergence of the pointer basis in a quantum measurement process, its appearance and universality under Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics, its theoretical and experimental investigation in some other physical scenarios, and the related phenomenon of double sudden change of trace distance discord. Several open questions are identified, and we envisage that in answering them we will gain significant further insight about the relation between the SCP and the symmetry-geometric aspects of the quantum state space.Comment: Lectures on General Quantum Correlations and their Applications, F.     Familial clustering of Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata: an unknown genetic syndrome?

    BACKGROUND: Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) is defined as the occurrence of multiple tumorous intraabdominal lesions, which are myomatous nodules. LPD is a rare disease with only about 100 cases reported. The usual course of LPD is benign with the majority of the patients being premenopausal females. Only two cases involving men have been reported, no syndrome or familial occurrence of LPD has been described. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a Caucasian-American family in which six members (three men) are diagnosed with Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) and three deceased family members most likely had LPD (based on the autopsy reports). Furthermore we describe the association of LPD with Raynaud's syndrome and Prurigo nodularis. CONCLUSION: Familial clustering of Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) has not been reported so far. The etiology of LPD is unknown and no mode of inheritance is known. We discuss possible modes of inheritance in the presented case, taking into account the possibility of a genetic syndrome. Given the similarity to other genetic syndromes with leiomyomatosis and skin alterations, we describe possible similar genetic pathomechanisms
