Hardy's paradox and violation of a state-independent Bell inequality in time
Tests such as Bell's inequality and Hardy's paradox show that joint
probabilities and correlations between distant particles in quantum mechanics
are inconsistent with local realistic theories. Here we experimentally
demonstrate these concepts in the time domain, using a photonic entangling gate
to perform nondestructive measurements on a single photon at different times.
We show that Hardy's paradox is much stronger in time and demonstrate the
violation of a temporal Bell inequality independent of the quantum state,
including for fully mixed states.Comment: Published Version, 4 pages, 3 figures. New, more boring titl
Characterizing quantum dynamics with initial system-environment correlations
We fully characterize the reduced dynamics of an open quantum system
initially correlated with its environment. Using a photonic qubit coupled to a
simulated environment we tomographically reconstruct a superchannel---a
generalised channel that treats preparation procedures as inputs---from
measurement of the system alone, despite its coupling to the environment. We
introduce novel quantitative measures for determining the strength of initial
correlations, and to allow an experiment to be optimised in regards to its
environment.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figure
Entanglement-free certification of entangling gates
Not all quantum protocols require entanglement to outperform their classical
alternatives. The nonclassical correlations that lead to this quantum advantage
are conjectured to be captured by quantum discord. Here we demonstrate that
discord can be explicitly used as a resource: certifying untrusted entangling
gates without generating entanglement at any stage. We implement our protocol
in the single-photon regime, and show its success in the presence of high
levels of noise and imperfect gate operations. Our technique offers a practical
method for benchmarking entangling gates in physical architectures in which
only highly-mixed states are available.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Quantum entanglement distribution with 810 nm photons through telecom fibers
We demonstrate the distribution of polarization entangled photons of
wavelength 810 nm through standard telecom fibers. This technique allows
quantum communication protocols to be performed over established fiber
infrastructure, and makes use of the smaller and better performing setups
available around 800 nm, as compared to those which use telecom wavelengths
around 1550 nm. We examine the excitation and subsequent quenching of
higher-order spatial modes in telecom fibers up to 6 km in length, and perform
a distribution of high quality entanglement (visibility 95.6%). Finally, we
demonstrate quantum key distribution using entangled 810 nm photons over a 4.4
km long installed telecom fiber link.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Trace elements in home-processed food obtained from unconventional animals
Wild animals have been used as food since ancient times and, currently, the consumption of unconventional animals is increasing worldwide. The process of cooking meat using traditional recipes includes a variety of ingredients, which can influence the total metal intake from the diet. In this study, the concentrations of eight essential (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Se, Ni, Mo, and Co) and six non-essential (Pb, Cd, Hg, Al, As, and Cr) trace elements were determined in home-processed food obtained from snails and from three common species of game animals (woodcock, pheasant, and hare), seasoned with anchovies, mushrooms, and different vegetables using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In general, Fe was the most abundant trace element, ranging from 18 \ub1 8 \u3bcg/g in pheasant to 99 \ub1 76 \u3bcg/g in snail, and Co was the least abundant, ranging from 0.007 \ub1 0.003 \u3bcg/g in hare to 0.093 \ub1 0.048 \u3bcg/g in snail. Regarding the non-essential trace elements, Pb concentrations showed wide variations, reaching a concentration of 17.30 \u3bcg/g in hare, while Cd concentrations were higher in snail, ranging from 0.18 to 0.46 \u3bcg/g. These alternative food sources can offer an important contribution to the human nutritional requirements of essential trace elements, in particular of Fe. The high concentrations of Pb and Cd present in some samples should be considered as potentially dangerous for the consumers
Discrete single-photon quantum walks with tunable decoherence
Quantum walks have a host of applications, ranging from quantum computing to
the simulation of biological systems. We present an intrinsically stable,
deterministic implementation of discrete quantum walks with single photons in
space. The number of optical elements required scales linearly with the number
of steps. We measure walks with up to 6 steps and explore the
quantum-to-classical transition by introducing tunable decoherence. Finally, we
also investigate the effect of absorbing boundaries and show that decoherence
significantly affects the probability of absorption.Comment: Published version, 5 pages, 4 figure
A novel thermo-geometrical model for accurate keyhole porosity prediction in Laser Powder-Bed Fusion
When performing Laser Powder-Bed Fusion, undesired physical phenomena, such as balling, preballing and keyhole, must be avoided in order to achieve high-quality products. To date, keyhole-free process parameters can be identified either using demanding empirical methods or complex numerical simulations, while only a few analytical models can be found in literature for this purpose. In this work, state-of-the-art analytical models for predicting keyhole porosity were summarized and proved to be rather inaccurate because they are only based on thermodynamic principles, whereas they neglect the geometry and both the kinetics and kinematics of the keyhole cavity, which do also influence cavity collapse and porosity formation. Here an innovative physics-based semi-analytical model for predicting the formation of keyhole-related porosities was conceived, in which both thermodynamic and geometrical factors are taken into account. The proposed model was validated by performing single tracks experiments on Ti6Al4V according to a full factorial DoE on laser power and scanning speed. Produced samples were cross-sectioned and analyzed to evaluate keyhole porosity formation. The comparison between experimental data and model predictions confirmed the higher accuracy of the new model with respect to state of the art models. Besides improving the understanding of the keyhole phenomenon, the proposed model may provide a novel, effective and simple tool for fast process parameter optimization in industry
Occurrence of ochratoxin a in different types of cheese offered for sale in Italy
The detection of Ochratoxin A (OTA) in the milk of ruminants occurs infrequently and at low levels, but its occurrence may be higher in dairy products such as cheese. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of OTA in cheeses purchased in the metropolitan city of Bologna (Italy) and the surrounding area. For the analysis, a LC-MS/MS method with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1 µg/kg was used. OTA was detected in seven out of 51 samples of grated hard cheese (concentration range 1.3–22.4 µg/kg), while it was not found in the 33 cheeses of other types which were also analysed. These data show a low risk of OTA contamination for almost all types of cheese analysed. To improve the safety of cheese marketed in grated form, more regulations on cheese rind, which is the part most susceptible to OTA-producing moulds, should be implemented or, alternatively, producers should consider not using the rind as row material for grated cheese. It would be interesting to continue these investigations particularly on grated hard cheeses to have more data to update the risk assessment of OTA in cheese, as also suggested by EFSA in its 2020 scientific opinion on OTA
Efficient measurement of quantum dynamics via compressive sensing
The resources required to characterise the dynamics of engineered quantum
systems-such as quantum computers and quantum sensors-grow exponentially with
system size. Here we adapt techniques from compressive sensing to exponentially
reduce the experimental configurations required for quantum process tomography.
Our method is applicable to dynamical processes that are known to be
nearly-sparse in a certain basis and it can be implemented using only
single-body preparations and measurements. We perform efficient, high-fidelity
estimation of process matrices on an experiment attempting to implement a
photonic two-qubit logic-gate. The data base is obtained under various
decoherence strengths. We find that our technique is both accurate and noise
robust, thus removing a key roadblock to the development and scaling of quantum
technologies.Comment: New title and authors. A new experimental section. Significant
