    A two-frequency acousto-optic modulator driver to improve the beam pointing stability during intensity ramps

    We report on a scheme to improve the pointing stability of the first order beam diffracted by an acousto-optic modulator (AOM). Due to thermal effects inside the crystal, the angular position of the beam can change by as much as 1 mrad when the radio-frequency power in the AOM is reduced to decrease the first order beam intensity. This is done for example to perform forced evaporative cooling in ultracold atom experiments using far-off-resonant optical traps. We solve this problem by driving the AOM with two radio-frequencies f1f_1 and f2f_2. The power of f2f_2 is adjusted relative to the power of f1f_1 to keep the total power constant. Using this, the beam displacement is decreased by a factor of twenty. The method is simple to implement in existing experimental setups, without any modification of the optics

    This study evaluated the intra- and inter-rater reliability of the Pooling score (P-score) in clinical endoscopic evaluation of severity of swal- lowing disorder, considering excess residue in the pharynx and larynx. The score (minimum 4 - maximum 11) is obtained by the sum of the scores given to the site of the bolus, the amount and ability to control residue/bolus pooling, the latter assessed on the basis of cough, raclage, number of dry voluntary or re ex swallowing acts ( 5). Four judges evaluated 30 short lms of pharyngeal transit of 10 solid (1/4 of a cracker), 11 creamy (1 tablespoon of jam) and 9 liquid (1 tablespoon of 5 cc of water coloured with methlyene blue, 1 ml in 100 ml) boluses in 23 subjects (10 M/13 F, age from 31 to 76 yrs, mean age 58.56\ub111.76 years) with different pathologies. The lms were randomly distributed on two CDs, which differed in terms of the sequence of the lms, and were given to judges (after an explanatory ses- sion) at time 0, 24 hours later (time 1) and after 7 days (time 2). The inter- and intra-rater reliability of the P-score was calculated using the intra-class correlation coef cient (ICC; 3,k). The possibility that consistency of boluses could affect the scoring of the lms was considered. The ICC for site, amount, management and the P-score total was found to be, respectively, 0.999, 0.997, 1.00 and 0.999. Clinical evaluation of a criterion of severity of a swallowing disorder remains a crucial point in the management of patients with pathologies that predispose to complications. The P-score, derived from static and dynamic parameters, yielded a very high correlation among the scores attributed by the four judges during observations carried out at different times. Bolus consistencies did not affect the outcome of the test: the analysis of variance, performed to verify if the scores attributed by the four judges to the parameters selected, might be in uenced by the different consistencies of the boluses, was not signi cant. These initial data validate the clinical use of the P-score in the management of patients with deglutition disorders by a multidisciplinary team

We develop further the theory of such vertex algebras by introducing formal calculus techniques and investigating the notion of polylocal fields.     Effect of freeze-dryer design on heat transfer variability investigated using a 3D mathematical model

    International audienceIn the freeze-drying process, vials located at the border of the shelf usually present higher heat flow rates which in turn result in higher product temperatures than central vials. This phenomenon, named edge vial effect, can result in product quality variability within the same batch of vials and between batches at different scales. Our objective was to investigate the effect of various freeze-dryer design features on the heat transfer variability. A 3D mathematical model previously developed in COMSOL Multiphysics and experimentally validated was used to simulate heat transfer of a set of vials located at the edge and in the centre of the shelf. The design features considered were the loading configurations of the vials, the thermal characteristics of the rail, the walls and the shelves and some relevant dimensions of the drying chamber geometry. The presence of the rail in the loading configuration and the value of the shelf emissivity strongly impacted on the heat flow rates received by the vials. Conversely, the heat transfer was not significantly influenced by modifications of the thermal conductivity of the rail, the emissivity of the walls and by the geometry of the drying chamber. The developed model revealed to be a powerful tool to predict the heat transfer variability between edge and central vials for the cycle development and scale-up and to compare various freeze-dryer design features

    Federating heterogeneous datasets to enhance data sharing and experiment reproducibility

    Recent studies have demonstrated the difficulties to replicate scientific findings and/or experiments published in past.1 The effects seen in the replicated experiments were smaller than previously reported. Some of the explanations for these findings include the complexity of the experimental design and the pressure on researches to report positive findings. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) suggests that every study considered for publication must submit a plan to share the de-identified patient data no later than 6 months after publication. There is a growing demand to enhance the management of clinical data, facilitate data sharing across institutions and also to keep track of the data from previous experiments. The ultimate goal is to assure the reproducibility of experiments in the future. This paper describes Shiny-tooth, a web based application created to improve clinical data acquisition during the clinical trial; data federation of such data as well as morphological data derived from medical images; Currently, this application is being used to store clinical data from an osteoarthritis (OA) study.     Feshbach resonances in ultracold K(39)

    We discover several magnetic Feshbach resonances in collisions of ultracold K(39) atoms, by studying atom losses and molecule formation. Accurate determination of the magnetic-field resonance locations allows us to optimize a quantum collision model for potassium isotopes. We employ the model to predict the magnetic-field dependence of scattering lengths and of near-threshold molecular levels. Our findings will be useful to plan future experiments on ultracold potassium atoms and molecules.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
