    Coupled Biological and Thermochemical Process for Plastic Waste Conversion into Biopolymers

    The aqueous phase produced from the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of three matrices (Plasmix treated with different operative conditions and polystyrene) was subjected to acidogenic fermentation (AF) batch tests to obtain organic acids, which are the ideal substrates for biopolymers (e.g., polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHA) production from mixed microbial cultures (MMC). Parallel tests in the presence of only HTL water fractions or only glucose (an easily biodegradable compound), or in presence of both, were conducted and compared to assess any possible recalcitrant or inhibitory effect of plastic waste from the HTL treatment during the AF process. These tests resulted, within approximately 30 days of operation, in a conversion of 96 ± 21% (COD/COD) of the Plasmix by-products after a 2h thermochemical treatment into organic acids, a 54 ± 7% (COD/COD) of conversion for Plasmix by-products treated 4h, and 29 ± 1% (COD/COD) of conversion in the presence of polystyrene residual water

    First case of Anaplasma platys infection in a dog from Croatia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is known that <it>Anaplasma (A.) platys</it>, the causative agent of infectious canine cyclic thrombocytopenia, is endemic in countries of the Mediterranean basin. However, few reports are available from the Balkans. This case report describes a dog, which was imported from Croatia to Germany in May 2010. One month later the dog was presented to a local veterinarian in Germany due to intermittent/recurrent diarrhoea. Diagnostic tests were performed to identify infections caused by <it>Anaplasma </it>spp., <it>Ehrlichia </it>spp., <it>Hepatozoon canis, Babesia </it>spp., <it>Leishmania </it>spp., <it>Borrelia burgdorferi </it>and/or <it>Dirofilaria immitis</it>.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Haematological examination of a blood smear revealed basophilic inclusions in thrombocytes, which were confirmed as <it>A. platys </it>with a species-specific real-time PCR. Additionally, an infection with <it>Babesia (B.) vogeli </it>was also detected (PCR and serology). No specific antibodies against <it>Anaplasma </it>antigen were detectable. Although the dog showed no specific clinical signs, thrombocytopenia, anaemia and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) were observed. Sequencing of a 1,348-bp partial ribosomal RNA gene revealed highest homology to <it>A. platys </it>sequences from Thailand, Japan and France.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>A. platys </it>was detected for first time in a dog imported from Croatia. As the dog was also co-infected by <it>B. vogeli</it>, unique serological and haematological findings were recorded. Thrombocytopenia, anaemia and elevated values of C-reactive protein were the laboratory test abnormalities observed in this case. <it>A. platys </it>infections should be considered in dogs coming from Croatia and adjacent regions.</p

    Toward Diagnosing Leishmania infantum Infection in Asymptomatic Dogs in an Area Where Leishmaniasis Is Endemic

    The most frequently used diagnostic methods were compared in a longitudinal survey with Leishmania infantum-infected asymptomatic dogs from an area of Italy where leishmaniasis is endemic. In February and March 2005, 845 asymptomatic dogs were tested by an immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), a dipstick assay (DS), and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for L. infantum and by IFAT for Ehrlichia canis. Dogs seronegative for L. infantum were further parasitologically evaluated by microscopic examination of lymph node tissues and PCR of skin samples. A total of 204 animals both serologically and parasitologically negative for L. infantum at the first sampling were enrolled in the trial and were further examined for canine leishmaniasis (CanL) and canine monocytic ehrlichiosis in November 2005 (i.e., the end of the first sandfly season) and March 2006 and 2007 (1- and 2-year follow-ups, respectively). At the initial screening, the overall rates of L. infantum seroprevalence were 9.5% by IFAT, 17.1% by ELISA, and 9.8% by DS and the overall rate of E. canis seroprevalence was 15%. The rates of concordance between the results of IFAT and DS were almost equal, whereas the rate of concordance between the results of IFAT and DS and those of the ELISA was lower. The results of the annual incidence of Leishmania infection were variable, depending on the test employed, with the highest values registered for PCR (i.e., 5.7% and 11.4% at the 1- and 2-year follow-ups, respectively), followed by ELISA, IFAT, and DS. Over the 2 years of observation, 55 animals (i.e., 26.9%) became positive for L. infantum by one or more diagnostic tests at different follow-up times, with 12.7% showing clinical signs related to CanL, while the remaining 87.3% were asymptomatic.     Improved qualty bio-crude from hydrothermal liquefaction of oak wood assisted by zero-valent metals

    The production of bio-fuels is becoming one of the biggest challenges of this decade. In this context, the interest on hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is continuously growing. In this work, the HTL of oak wood to produce a high-quality bio-crude is proposed. The effect of the use of zero-valent metals (ZVMs) as hydrogen producers (Fe and Zn) and hydrodeoxygenation catalysts (Ni and Co) on bio-crude quality is investigated. The tests were conducted at 330 °C in micro-batch reactors at different reaction times in the presence of ZVMs. Fe and Zn are oxidized by subcritical water producing active hydrogen, which is used to stabilize biomass fragments during the process and to be used in hydrodeoxygenation reactions in the presence of Ni and Co. The results show that the use of hydrogen producers significantly affects bio-crude yields, which increase by 20% with respect to the blank test when Fe is used. Furthermore, the synergic effect between the hydrogen producers (Fe and Zn) and the catalysts (Ni and Co) was tested. The results pointed out an enhancement of the bio-crude quality with an increase in the H/C ratio and a decrease in the O/C ratio, and also, looking at the bio-crude composition, the hydrogenation extent is clearly proven, for example, 2-cyclopenten-1-ones increase at the expense of furan derivatives

    Antiproliferative Oleanane Saponins from Meryta denhamii.

    Eight new oleanane saponins (1-8) together with four know saponins (9-12) were isolated from the aerial parts of Meryta denhamii. Their structures were elucidated by ID and 2D NMR experiments including ID TOCSY, DQF-COSY, ROESY, HSQC, and HMBC spectroscopy, as well as ESIMS analysis.
