Scaling Behavior of Ricci Curvature at Short Distance near Two Dimensions
We study the renormalization of the Ricci curvature as an example of
generally covariant operators in quantum gravity near two dimensions. We find
that it scales with a definite scaling dimension at short distance. The Ricci
curvature singularity at the big bang can be viewed as such a scaling
phenomenon. The problem of the spacetime singularity may be resolved by the
scale invariance of the spacetime at short distance.Comment: 9pages, LaTe

Time-resolved spectroscopy of multi-excitonic decay in an InAs quantum dot
The multi-excitonic decay process in a single InAs quantum dot is studied
through high-resolution time-resolved spectroscopy. A cascaded emission
sequence involving three spectral lines is seen that is described well over a
wide range of pump powers by a simple model. The measured biexcitonic decay
rate is about 1.5 times the single-exciton decay rate. This ratio suggests the
presence of selection rules, as well as a significant effect of the Coulomb
interaction on the biexcitonic wavefunction.Comment: one typo fixe
Efficient implementation of selective recoupling in heteronuclear spin systems using Hadamard matrices
We present an efficient scheme which couples any designated pair of spins in
heteronuclear spin systems. The scheme is based on the existence of Hadamard
matrices. For a system of spins with pairwise coupling, the scheme
concatenates intervals of system evolution and uses at most pulses
where . Our results demonstrate that, in many systems, selective
recoupling is possible with linear overhead, contrary to common speculation

Structural and photophysical characterisation of coordination and optical isomers of mononuclear ruthenium(II) polypyridyl 1,2,4-triazole complexes
The X-ray crystal structure of the N2 isomers of the Ru(bipy)2 complexes of Hphpztr (1) and Hpztr (2), (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Hphpztr = 2-(5'-phenyl-4'H-[1,2,4]triazol-3'-yl)pyrazine and Hpztr = 2-(4'H-[1,2,4]triazol-3'-yl)pyrazine) are reported. The molecular structure obtained for 2 demonstrates an interesting structural aspect in the sharing of a single proton between two molecular units. The isolation of the Î and Î stereoisomers of 1 and [Ru(phen)2(pztr)]+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) (3) by semipreparative HPLC is also reported. The compounds obtained are characterised by electronic spectroscopy and particular attention is paid to the photophysical properties of Î and Î isomers of 1 and 3, in chiral enantiopure and racemic solvents

Optical Detection of a Single Nuclear Spin
We propose a method to optically detect the spin state of a 31-P nucleus
embedded in a 28-Si matrix. The nuclear-electron hyperfine splitting of the
31-P neutral-donor ground state can be resolved via a direct frequency
discrimination measurement of the 31-P bound exciton photoluminescence using
single photon detectors. The measurement time is expected to be shorter than
the lifetime of the nuclear spin at 4 K and 10 T.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Slow dynamics near glass transitions in thin polymer films
The -process (segmental motion) of thin polystyrene films supported
on glass substrate has been investigated in a wider frequency range from
10 Hz to 10 Hz using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy and thermal
expansion spectroscopy. The relaxation rate of the -process increases
with decreasing film thickness at a given temperature above the glass
transition. This increase in the relaxation rate with decreasing film thickness
is much more enhanced near the glass transition temperature. The glass
transition temperature determined as the temperature at which the relaxation
time of the -process becomes a macroscopic time scale shows a distinct
molecular weight dependence. It is also found that the Vogel temperature has
the thickness dependence, i.e., the Vogel temperature decreases with decreasing
film thickness. The expansion coefficient of the free volume is
extracted from the temperature dependence of the relaxation time within the
free volume theory. The fragility index is also evaluated as a function of
thickness. Both and are found to decrease with decreasing film
