Introduction to Categories and Categorical Logic
The aim of these notes is to provide a succinct, accessible introduction to
some of the basic ideas of category theory and categorical logic. The notes are
based on a lecture course given at Oxford over the past few years. They contain
numerous exercises, and hopefully will prove useful for self-study by those
seeking a first introduction to the subject, with fairly minimal prerequisites.
The coverage is by no means comprehensive, but should provide a good basis for
further study; a guide to further reading is included. The main prerequisite is
a basic familiarity with the elements of discrete mathematics: sets, relations
and functions. An Appendix contains a summary of what we will need, and it may
be useful to review this first. In addition, some prior exposure to abstract
algebra - vector spaces and linear maps, or groups and group homomorphisms -

Initial Scientific Results from Phase-Referenced Astrometry of Sub-Arcsecond Binaries
The Palomar Testbed Interferometer has observed several binary star systems
whose separations fall between the interferometric coherence length (a few
hundredths of an arcsecond) and the typical atmospheric seeing limit of one
arcsecond. Using phase-referencing techniques we measure the relative
separations of the systems to precisions of a few tens of micro-arcseconds. We
present the first scientific results of these observations, including the
astrometric detection of the faint third stellar component of the kappa Pegasi

Soluble CD40 ligand can replace the normal T cell-derived CD40 ligand signal to B cells in T cell-dependent activation
We have constructed a soluble chimeric fusion protein between the mouse CD8 alpha chain and the mouse CD40 T cell ligand. This protein binds to both human and mouse B cells. By itself it induced a modest degree of B cell proliferation, but together with anti-immunoglobulin (anti-Ig) antibody it greatly stimulated B cell proliferation, as determined by both [3H]thymidine uptake and increase in cell numbers. These data are evidence that the CD40 ligand on T cells provides a signal that drives B cell proliferation. This signal is synergistic with that delivered by anti-Ig antibody
Vacuum Alignment in Technicolor Theories-I. The Technifermion Sector
We have carried out numerical studies of vacuum alignment in technicolor
models of electroweak and flavor symmetry breaking. The goal is to understand
alignment's implications for strong and weak CP nonconservation in quark
interactions. In this first part, we restrict our attention to the
technifermion sector of simple models. We find several interesting phenomena,
including (1) the possibility that all observable phases in the technifermions'
unitary vacuum-alignment matrix are integer multiples of \pi/N' where N' \le N,
the number of technifermion doublets, and (2) the possibility of exceptionally
light pseudoGoldstone technipions.Comment: 19 pages, Latex with one postscript figur
Direct radiative capture of p-wave neutrons
The neutron direct radiative capture (DRC) process is investigated,
highlighting the role of incident p-wave neutrons. A set of calculations is
shown for the 12-C(n,gamma) process at incoming neutron energies up to 500 keV,
a crucial region for astrophysics. The cross section for neutron capture
leading to loosely bound s, p and d orbits of 13-C is well reproduced by the
DRC model demonstrating the feasibility of using this reaction channel to study
the properties of nuclear wave functions on and outside the nuclear surface. A
sensitivity analysis of the results on the neutron-nucleus interaction is
performed for incident s- as well as p-waves. It turned out that the DRC cross
section for p-wave neutrons is insensitive to this interaction, contrary to the
case of incident s-wave neutrons.

The Collider Phenomenology of Technihadrons in the Technicolor Straw Man Model
We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest SU(3)_C singlet and non-singlet
technihadrons in the Straw Man Model of low-scale technicolor (TCSM). The
technihadrons are assumed to be those arising in topcolor--assisted technicolor
models in which topcolor is broken by technifermion condensates. We improve
upon the description of the color--singlet sector presented in our earlier
paper introducing the TCSM (hep-ph/9903369). These improvements are most
important for subprocess energies well below the masses of the technirho and
techniomega, and, therefore, apply especially to e+e- colliders such as LEP and
a low--energy linear collider. In the color--octet sector, we consider mixing
of the gluon, the coloron V_8 from topcolor breaking, and four isosinglet
color--octet technirho mesons. We assume, as expected in walking technicolor,
that these technirhos decay into qbar-q, gg, and g-technipion final states, but
not into technipion pairs. All the TCSM production and decay processes
discussed here are included in the event generator Pythia. We present several
simulations appropriate for the Tevatron Collider, and suggest benchmark model
lines for further experimental investigation.Comment: 42 pages, 7 figure
The PRIMA fringe sensor unit
The Fringe Sensor Unit (FSU) is the central element of the Phase Referenced
Imaging and Micro-arcsecond Astrometry (PRIMA) dual-feed facility and provides
fringe sensing for all observation modes, comprising off-axis fringe tracking,
phase referenced imaging, and high-accuracy narrow-angle astrometry. It is
installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and successfully
servoed the fringe tracking loop during the initial commissioning phase. Unique
among interferometric beam combiners, the FSU uses spatial phase modulation in
bulk optics to retrieve real-time estimates of fringe phase after spatial
filtering. A R=20 spectrometer across the K-band makes the retrieval of the
group delay signal possible. The FSU was integrated and aligned at the VLTI in
summer 2008. It yields phase and group delay measurements at sampling rates up
to 2 kHz, which are used to drive the fringe tracking control loop. During the
first commissioning runs, the FSU was used to track the fringes of stars with
K-band magnitudes as faint as m_K=9.0, using two VLTI Auxiliary Telescopes (AT)
and baselines of up to 96 m. Fringe tracking using two Very Large Telescope
(VLT) Unit Telescopes (UT) was demonstrated. During initial commissioning and
combining stellar light with two ATs, the FSU showed its ability to improve the
VLTI sensitivity in K-band by more than one magnitude towards fainter objects,
which is of fundamental importance to achieve the scientific objectives of

Building the Brazilian Academic Genealogy Tree
Along the history, many researchers provided remarkable contributions to
science, not only advancing knowledge but also in terms of mentoring new
scientists. Currently, identifying and studying the formation of researchers
over the years is a challenging task as current repositories of theses and
dissertations are cataloged in a decentralized way through many local digital
libraries. Following our previous work in which we created and analyzed a large
collection of genealogy trees extracted from NDLTD, in this paper we focus our
attention on building such trees for the Brazilian research community. For
this, we use data from the Lattes Platform, an internationally renowned
initiative from CNPq, the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and
Technological Development, for managing information about individual
researchers and research groups in Brazil
