Room temperature GW bar detector with opto-mechanical readout
We present the full implementation of a room-temperature gravitational wave
bar detector equipped with an opto-mechanical readout. The mechanical
vibrations are read by a Fabry--Perot interferometer whose length changes are
compared with a stable reference optical cavity by means of a resonant laser.
The detector performance is completely characterized in terms of spectral
sensitivity and statistical properties of the fluctuations in the system output
signal. The new kind of readout technique allows for wide-band detection
sensitivity and we can accurately test the model of the coupled oscillators for
thermal noise. Our results are very promising in view of cryogenic operation
and represent an important step towards significant improvements in the
performance of massive gravitational wave detectors.Comment: 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Minimal Potentials with Very Many Minima
We demonstrate, by construction, that simple renormalizable matrix potentials
with S_N, as opposed to O(N), symmetry can exhibit an exponentially large
number of inequivalent deep local minima.Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, 2 figures. Additional applications and references

Infrared Observations of AGN
We present results from an imaging and spectroscopic study of the dust
properties of Seyfert galaxies in the 1-10um range. The data are compared to
state of the art models of torus emission to constrain geometrical and physical
properties of the obscuring medium.Comment: 2 pages, to appear in the IAU Symp.No.222 proceedings:"The Interplay

Fine Structure of the 1s3p ^3P_J Level in Atomic ^4He: Theory and Experiment
We report on a theoretical calculation and a new experimental determination
of the 1s3p ^3P_J fine structure intervals in atomic ^4He. The values from the
theoretical calculation of 8113.730(6) MHz and 658.801(6) MHz for the nu_{01}
and nu_{12} intervals, respectively, disagree significantly with previous
experimental results. However, the new laser spectroscopic measurement reported
here yields values of 8113.714(28) MHz and 658.810(18) MHz for these intervals.
These results show an excellent agreement with the theoretical values and
resolve the apparent discrepancy between theory and experiment.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Spatio-temporal variability of sugarcane yield efficiency in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
The objective of this work was to assess the spatial and temporal variability of sugarcane yield efficiency and yield gap in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, throughout 16 growing seasons, considering climate and soil as main effects, and socioeconomic factors as complementary. An empirical model was used to assess potential and attainable yields, using climate data series from 37 weather stations. Soil effects were analyzed using the concept of production environments associated with a soil aptitude map for sugarcane. Crop yield efficiency increased from 0.42 to 0.58 in the analyzed period (1990/1991 to 2005/2006 crop seasons), and yield gap consequently decreased from 58 to 42%. Climatic factors explained 43% of the variability of sugarcane yield efficiency, in the following order of importance: solar radiation, water deficit, maximum air temperature, precipitation, and minimum air temperature. Soil explained 15% of the variability, considering the average of all seasons. There was a change in the correlation pattern of climate and soil with yield efficiency after the 2001/2002 season, probably due to the crop expansion to the west of the state during the subsequent period. Socioeconomic, biotic and crop management factors together explain 42% of sugarcane yield efficiency in the state of São Paulo
Dynamical two-mode squeezing of thermal fluctuations in a cavity opto-mechanical system
We report the experimental observation of two-mode squeezing in the
oscillation quadratures of a thermal micro-oscillator. This effect is obtained
by parametric modulation of the optical spring in a cavity opto-mechanical
system. In addition to stationary variance measurements, we describe the
dynamic behavior in the regime of pulsed parametric excitation, showing
enhanced squeezing effect surpassing the stationary 3dB limit. While the
present experiment is in the classical regime, our technique can be exploited
to produce entangled, macroscopic quantum opto-mechanical modes
