Comparing league formats with respect to match importance in Belgian football
Recently, most clubs in the highest Belgian football division have become convinced that the format of their league should be changed. Moreover, the TV station that broadcasts the league is pleading for a more attractive competition. However, the clubs have not been able to agree on a new league format, mainly because they have conflicting interests. In this paper, we compare the current league format, and three other formats that have been considered by the Royal Belgian Football Association. We simulate the course of each of these league formats, based on historical match results. We assume that the attractiveness of a format is determined by the importance of its games; our importance measure for a game is based on the number of teams for which this game can be decisive to reach a given goal. Furthermore, we provide an overview of how each league format aligns with the expectations and interests of each type of club
Random multi-index matching problems
The multi-index matching problem (MIMP) generalizes the well known matching
problem by going from pairs to d-uplets. We use the cavity method from
statistical physics to analyze its properties when the costs of the d-uplets
are random. At low temperatures we find for d>2 a frozen glassy phase with
vanishing entropy. We also investigate some properties of small samples by
enumerating the lowest cost matchings to compare with our theoretical
predictions.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figure
N—Person Stochastic Games: Extensions of the Finite State Space Case and Correlation
In this chapter, we present a framework for m-person stochastic games with an infinite state space. Our main purpose is to present a correlated equilibrium theorem proved by Nowak and Raghavan [42] for discounted stochastic games with a measurable state space, where the correlation o
Waveform Modelling for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna
LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in
gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based
gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz
gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources
abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of
massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals
that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of
compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central
to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical
and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that
these sources emit. This white paper is presented on behalf of the Waveform
Working Group for the LISA Consortium. It provides a review of the current
state of waveform models for LISA sources, and describes the significant
challenges that must yet be overcome.Comment: 239 pages, 11 figures, white paper from the LISA Consortium Waveform

Nonzero-sum Stochastic Games
This paper treats of stochastic games. We focus on nonzero-sum games and provide a detailed survey of
selected recent results. In Section 1, we consider stochastic Markov games. A correlation of strategies of the players, involving ``public signals'', is described, and a correlated equilibrium theorem proved recently by Nowak and Raghavan for discounted stochastic games with general state space is presented. We also report an extension of this result to a class of undiscounted stochastic games, satisfying some uniform ergodicity condition.
Stopping games are related to stochastic Markov games. In
Section 2, we describe a version of Dynkin's game related to
observation of a Markov process with random assignment mechanism of states to the players. Some recent contributions of the second author in this area are reported. The paper also contains a brief overview of the theory of nonzero-sum stochastic games and stopping games which is very far from being complete
