IECM calibration and data reduction requirements
The induced environment contamination monitor (IECM) tape recorder format, as it relates to the ouput of meaningful data from the IECM instrument, is explained. Eight-bit words (or bytes) generate numbers that represent voltage levels of electronic detection probes for each experiment. This information is amalgamated by the IECM Data Acquisition and Control System (DACS). In some cases bits represent certain status situations concerning an experiment, such as whether a valve is opened or closed. Voltages are transformed into meaningful physical phenomena through equations of calibration. Data formats and plots are generated as requested for each IECM experimenter
The characteristics and limitations of the MPS/MMS battery charging system
A series of tests was conducted on two 12 ampere hour nickel cadmium batteries under a simulated cycle regime using the multiple voltage versus temperature levels designed into the modular power system (MPS). These tests included: battery recharge as a function of voltage control level; temperature imbalance between two parallel batteries; a shorted or partially shorted cell in one of the two parallel batteries; impedance imbalance of one of the parallel battery circuits; and disabling and enabling one of the batteries from the bus at various charge and discharge states. The results demonstrate that the eight commandable voltage versus temperature levels designed into the MPS provide a very flexible system that not only can accommodate a wide range of normal power system operation, but also provides a high degree of flexibility in responding to abnormal operating conditions
Pollution reduction technology program for small jet aircraft engines: Class T1
Small jet aircraft engines (EPA class T1, turbojet and turbofan engines of less than 35.6 kN thrust) were evaluated with the objective of attaining emissions reduction consistent with performance constraints. Configurations employing the technological advances were screened and developed through full scale rig testing. The most promising approaches in full-scale engine testing were evaluated
Light curves for bump Cepheids computed with a dynamically zoned pulsation code
The dynamically zoned pulsation code developed by Castor, Davis, and Davison was used to recalculate the Goddard model and to calculate three other Cepheid models with the same period (9.8 days). This family of models shows how the bumps and other features of the light and velocity curves change as the mass is varied at constant period. The use of a code that is capable of producing reliable light curves demonstrates that the light and velocity curves for 9.8 day Cepheid models with standard homogeneous compositions do not show bumps like those that are observed unless the mass is significantly lower than the 'evolutionary mass.' The light and velocity curves for the Goddard model presented here are similar to those computed independently by Fischel, Sparks, and Karp. They should be useful as standards for future investigators

Rotational Symmetry Breaking in Sodium Doped Cuprates
For reasonable parameters a hole bound to a Na^{+} acceptor in
Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} has a doubly degenerate ground state whose
components can be represented as states with even (odd) reflection symmetry
around the x(y) -axes. The conductance pattern for one state is anisotropic as
the tip of a tunneling microscope scans above the Cu-O-Cu bonds along the
x(y)-axes. This anisotropy is pronounced at lower voltages but is reduced at
higher voltages. Qualitative agreement with recent experiments leads us to
propose this effect as an explanation of the broken local rotational symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
