Results 1 year after the Reemex system was applied for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence caused by intrinsic sphincter deficiency

We present 1-year results obtained with Reemex for the cure of intrinsic sphincter deficiencies (ISDs). We recruited all patients with primary cases of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) due to an ISD (Valsalva leak-point pressure less than 60 cm or maximal urethral closure pressure less than 20 cm) who did not receive previous surgery. Thirty-eight patients were operated on. Postoperative pain was 3 (range, 1-5, visual analogue scale) at 24 h from surgery. Immediate regulation (the day after surgery) was necessary in three of 38 patients (7.9%), two for obstructive voiding difficulties and one for incontinence. Late regulation was necessary in three of 38 patients (7.9%), two for obstructive voiding difficulties (after 6 months) and one for incontinence (1 year). Symptoms resolved after the sling adjustment. Our results suggest that sling adjustments resolve postoperative failures and maintain the success rate of the Reemex system even in the midterm

Abstract BACKGROUND: Objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the web-based questionnaire in pregnant women as a tool to examine prevalence, knowledge and attitudes about internet utilization for health-related purposes, in a sample of Italian pregnant women. METHODS: The questionnaire was composed by 9 sections for a total of 73 items. Reliability analysis was tested and content validity was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha to check internal consistency. Statistical analysis was performed through SPSS 13.0. RESULTS: Questionnaire was administered to 56 pregnant women. The higher value of Cronbach's alpha resulted on 61 items: alpha = 0.786 (n. 73 items: alpha = 0.579). High rate of pregnant women generally utilized internet (87.5%) and the 92.1% confirmed to use internet with the focus to acquire information about pregnancy (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The questionnaire showed a good reliability property in the pilot study. In terms of internal consistency and validity appeared to have a good performance. Given the high prevalence of pregnant women that use internet to search information about their pregnancy status, professional healthcare workers should give advice regarding official websites where they could retrieve safe information and learn knowledge based on scientific evidence

Probiotics in the add-on treatment of otitis media in clinical practice

Otitis media (OM) affects the middle ear and is typically characterized by earache. OM may be classified as acute (AOM) or chronic (COM), based on symptom duration. OM may be clinically suspected, but the diagnosis is usually confirmed by the otoscopy. Antibiotic therapy is frequently used in clinical practice. However, antibiotics often induce intestinal and respiratory dysbiosis associated with some clinical problems. A one-month course of a probiotic mixture (Abincol® containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 million living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 million living cells), was prescribed in the Group A, and was compared with no addon treatment, such as the Group B. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), at the end of antibiotic treatment (T1), at the end of probiotic course (T2), and at the end of 3-month follow-up (T3)
