    Mechanical performance of auxetic polyurethane foam for antivibration glove applications

    In this study the static and dynamic characteristics of conventional open cell polyurethane (PU), of auxetic (negative Poisson’s ratio) and of iso-density foams were analysed. The specimens were produced from conventional gray open-cells polyurethane foam with 30-35 pores/inch and 0.0027 g/cm3 density, by means of process which has been previously defined by the authors. Poisson’s ratio measurements were performed under quasi-static conditions using an MTS 858 servohydraulic test machine and a video image acquisition system. For the auxetic foams the results suggested similar behaviour to that previously reported in the literature, with significant increases in stiffness during compressive loading, and a significant dependence of the Poisson’s ratio on the applied strain. Transmissibility tests, performed in accordance with the ISO 13753 procedure for antivibration glove materials, suggested a strong dependence of the transmissibility on the foam manufacturing parameters. Within the frequency range from 10 to 31.5 Hz the transmissibility was found to be greater than 1, while it was less than 1 at all frequencies greater than 31.5 Hz. The transmissibility results were similar to the mean values for 80 resilient materials tested by Koton et. al., but were higher than the five best materials (not all polymeric) identified by the same researchers. In this study it has been suggested that the resilient behaviour of glove isolation materials should also be evaluated in terms of the indentation characteristics. A simple, linear elastic, Finite Element simulation was therefore performed, and the indentation results suggested that auxetic foams offer a significant decrease in compressive stresses with respect to conventional PU foams

    Dynamic behavior and damping capacity of auxetic foam pads

    A novel set of auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) open cell polyurethane foam has been developed and tested under dynamic loading conditions to assess the viscoelastic response under white noise random excitation and compressive cycling. Foam pads normalized to standard ISO 13753 have been tested at room temperature and frequency bandwidth 10-500 Hz to assess transmissibility characteristics for possible antivibration glove applications. The results show that the ISO 13753 normalized transmissibility for these foams falls below 0.6 above 100 Hz, with lower peak maximum stresses under indentation compared to conventional open cell solids. These results suggest possible use of the auxetic foam for pads or linens against « white fingers« vibration applications. Further tests have been conducted on cyclic compressive loading up to 3 Hz and loading ratios of 0.95 for loading histories up to 100000 cycles. The damping capacity of the auxetic foams showed and increase by a factor 10 compared to the conventional foams used to manufacture the negative Poisson's ratio ones, and stiffness degradation stabilized after few tens on cycles

    Optical surface photometry of radio galaxies - II. Observations and data analysis

    Optical imaging observations for 50 radio galaxies are presented. For each object isophotal contours, photometric profiles, structural parameters (position angle, ellipticity, Fourier coefficients), and total magnitudes are given. These observations, obtained in the Cousins R band, complement the data presented in a previous paper and are part of a larger project aimed at studying the optical properties of low redshift (z<0.12) radio galaxies (Govoni et al. 1999).     Investigating legal information in commercial websites: the Terms and conditions of use in different varieties of English

    The Terms and conditions of use which are embedded in commercial websites provide a standardised legal model based in common law which exemplifies the increasingly influential role that English plays in international and intercultural commercial and legal settings, but also how deeply rooted legal knowledge is in socio-cultural values and national cultures. Using a small monolingual corpus of Terms and conditions of use drafted in English and embedded in the commercial websites from different countries of origin and legislations based both on common law and civil law, the paper investigates the extent to which different layout/content and language features are displayed by: (1) ELF Terms and conditions translated from different languages/legislations, and (2) ENL non-translated Terms and conditions drafted in different \u2018core\u2019 varieties of English. The aim is to show that the English intralingual variation of this highly structured and conventionalised legal format reflects in fact the existing disparities in legal practice among various national legislations, even among systems belonging to the common law family. International legal models such as the one investigated should consequently be considered as \u201cglobally-relevant STs\u201d (Adab, 1998, p. 224), i.e. flexible text formats that have been adopted by most countries but at the same time allow for local socio-cultural aspects to influence the construction of legal discourse

    Ultrasound Guidance in Paravertebral Injections of Oxygen-Ozone: Treatment of Low Back Pain

    Background: Paravertebral injection of ozone is an established clinical practice for the treatment of Low Back Pain (LBP). The role of Ultrasound Guidance (USG) in mini invasive procedures has become important in many clinical practice thanks to the greater precision this technique can add. As matter of fact, a large volume of ozone in a single administration may have some adverse or side effects. In this study we wanted to verify if the use of USG in Oxygen/ Ozone (O2/O3) infiltrations could allow the administration of a smaller volume of gas mixture, increasing the safety and the comfort of the procedure itself, obtaining however similar or better results in pain decrease. Methods: We compared two groups of 25 patients affected by LBP, undergoing 10 infiltrations of O2/O3, by using USG (group U) or only anatomical landmarks (group AL). Pain intensity, by calculating Visual Analogical Scale (VAS) difference before and after the treatment, and the discomfort were evaluated in both groups. Results: The mean of the VAS before the treatment was 6.44 in group U and 6.48 in group AL. The mean of the VAS after the treatment was 2.22 in group U and 3.04 in group AL. The mean of discomfort rate was 2.84 in group U and 5.44 in group AL. The number of patients with unbearable discomfort was 0 in group U and 7 in group AL. Conclusions: As many other treatment, also paravertebral injections of O2/O3 benefits of the advantages of the US device which makes this treatment safer and more accurate

    Novel schedule for treatment of inflammatory breast cancer

    Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is the most aggressive form of this tumor, with the clinical and biological characteristics of a rapidly proliferating disease. This tumor is always diagnosed at advanced stages, atleast stage IIIB (locally advanced), so its management requires an integrated multidisciplinary approach with a systemic therapy followed by surgery and radiation therapy. Patients with IBC usually have a worse prognosis but the achievement of a pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy may have good rates of overall survival. We present the case of a 47 year old women with IBC, luminal B and with high proliferative index; she was successfully treated with a sequential schedule of chemotherapy (anthracyclines dose-dense/carboplatin+ taxane/Cyclophosphamide Methotrexate Fluorouracil), hormone-therapy, complementary radiotherapy and finally surgery until the achievement of a complete clinical and pathological response. Luminal B inflammatory breast cancer with high proliferation index can benefit from sequential schedules of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and hormonal treatment and this can result in pathological complete response

    Random separation property for stochastic Allen-Cahn-type equations

    We study a large class of stochastic p-Laplace Allen-Cahn equations with singular potential. Under suitable assumptions on the (multiplicative-type) noise we first prove existence, uniqueness, and regularity of variational solutions. Then, we show that a random separation property holds, i.e. almost every trajectory is strictly separated in space and time from the potential barriers. The threshold of separation is random, and we further provide exponential estimates on the probability of separation from the barriers. Eventually, we exhibit a convergence-in-probability result for the random separation threshold towards the deterministic one, as the noise vanishes, and we obtain an estimate of the convergence rate
