    Entanglement of separate nitrogen-vacancy centers coupled to a whispering-gallery mode cavity

    We present a quantum electrodynamical model involving nitrogen-vacancy centers coupled to a whispering-gallery mode cavity. Two schemes are considered to create W state and Bell state, respectively. One of the schemes makes use of the Raman transition with the cavity field virtually excited; The other enables the Bell state preparation and quantum information transfer by virtue of dark state evolution and adiabatic passage, which is tolerant to ambient noise and experimental parameter fluctuations. We justify our schemes by considering the experimental feasibility and challenge using currently available technology.Comment: 8 pages and 5 figure

    Private Standards, Handling and Hygiene in Fruit Export Supply Chains: A Preliminary Evaluation of the Economic Impact of Parallel Standards

    With the emergence of private food safety and quality standards in developed countries fruit exporting countries in the developing world face increasing constraints to access markets in the rich industrialised countries in the North. Producers in the South have no alternative as to make the necessary investments on farms and in pack houses to comply with the requirements of these food quality and safety standards. The export of fresh fruit is an important component of South African agricultural exports, with citrus fruit exported to markets such as Europe being of particular importance. This paper reports selected results from a large research project into the impact of private standard compliance on the quality of the fruit and the returns to farmers. The research process involved a multi-disciplinary analysis of Agricultural Economics and Microbiology / Plant pathology as we analysed the dynamics of the citrus export supply chain from the farms in South Africa to the end consumer in Europe. Sampled fruit containers were followed through the whole supply chain which allowed us to provide an exposé of the behaviour of the different actors in the citrus supply chain and obtain some evidence of poor handling and hygiene standards by means of a comparison of the experimental observations with various relevant components of the EurepGAP control points and compliance criteria for fruit and vegetables. Observations suggest that these standards are adequately applied to the production and handling of fruit at the farm and pack house levels while on the other hand the subsequent stages (mainly after the importing harbour in Europe) of the fruit supply chain are seemingly not subjected to the same strict requirements laid out for producers, leading to fruit quality deterioration and financial losses for producers. This constitutes clear parallel standards in terms of fruit safety and quality standards between upstream and downstream sections of the supply chain and questions thus the purpose of the standards and the financial return for producers making large investments to comply with these privately introduced standards.International Relations/Trade,

    Nonclassical paths in the recurrence spectrum of diamagnetic atoms

    Using time-independent scattering matrices, we study how the effects of nonclassical paths on the recurrence spectra of diamagnetic atoms can be extracted from purely quantal calculations. This study reveals an intimate relationship between two types of nonclassical paths: exotic ghost orbits and diffractive orbits. This relationship proves to be a previously unrecognized reason for the success of semiclassical theories, like closed-orbit theory, and permits a comprehensive reformulation of the semiclassical theory that elucidates its convergence properties.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    A Case Study in Matching Test and Proof Coverage

    AbstractThis paper studies the complementarity of test and deductive proof processes for Java programs specified in JML (Java Modeling Language). The proof of a program may be long and difficult, especially when automatic provers give up. When a theorem is not automatically proved, there are two possibilities: either the theorem is correct and there are not enough pieces of information to deal with the proof, or the theorem is incorrect. In order to discriminate between those two alternatives, testing techniques can be used. Here, we present experiments around the use of the JACK tool to prove Java programs annotated with JML assertions. When JACK fails to decide proof obligations, we use a combinatorial testing tool, TOBIAS, to produce large test suites that exercise the unproved program parts. The key issue is to establish the relevance of the test suite with respect to the unproved proof obligations. Therefore, we use code coverage techniques: our approach takes advantage of the statement orientation of the JACK tool to compare the statements involved in the unproved proof obligations and the statements covered by the test suite. Finally, we ensure our confidence within the test suites, by evaluating them on mutant program killing exercises. These techniques have been put into practice and are illustrated by a simple case study

    Coexistence of localized and itinerant electrons in BaFe2X3 (X = S and Se) revealed by photoemission spectroscopy

    We report a photoemission study at room temperature on BaFe2X3 (X = S and Se) and CsFe2Se3 in which two-leg ladders are formed by the Fe sites. The Fe 2p core-level peaks of BaFe2X3 are broad and exhibit two components, indicating that itinerant and localized Fe 3d sites coexist similar to KxFe2-ySe2. The Fe 2p core-level peak of CsFe2Se3 is rather sharp and is accompanied by a charge-transfer satellite. The insulating ground state of CsFe2Se3 can be viewed as a Fe2+ Mott insulator in spite of the formal valence of +2.5. The itinerant versus localized behaviors can be associated with the stability of chalcogen p holes in the two-leg ladder structure.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in publication for Physical Review

    Deforming Maps for Lie Group Covariant Creation and Annihilation Operators

    Any deformation of a Weyl or Clifford algebra A can be realized through a `deforming map', i.e. a formal change of generators in A. This is true in particular if A is covariant under a Lie algebra g and its deformation is induced by some triangular deformation UhgU_h g of the Hopf algebra UgUg. We propose a systematic method to construct all the corresponding deforming maps, together with the corresponding realizations of the action of UhgU_h g. The method is then generalized and explicitly applied to the case that UhgU_h g is the quantum group Uhsl(2)U_h sl(2). A preliminary study of the status of deforming maps at the representation level shows in particular that `deformed' Fock representations induced by a compact UhgU_h g can be interpreted as standard `undeformed' Fock representations describing particles with ordinary Bose or Fermi statistics.Comment: Latex file, 26 pages, no figures.     Crystallization in a model glass: influence of the boundary conditions

    Using molecular dynamics calculations and the Voronoi tessellation, we study the evolution of the local structure of a soft-sphere glass versus temperature starting from the liquid phase at different quenching rates. This study is done for different sizes and for two different boundary conditions namely the usual cubic periodic boundary conditions and the isotropic hyperspherical boundary conditions for which the particles evolve on the surface of a hypersphere in four dimensions. Our results show that for small system sizes, crystallization can indeed be induced by the cubic boundary conditions. On the other hand we show that finite size effects are more pronounced on the hypersphere and that crystallization is artificially inhibited even for large system sizes.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

    Kinetic simulations of X-B and O-X-B mode conversion

    We have performed fully-kinetic simulations of X-B and O-X-B mode conversion in one and two dimensional setups using the PIC code EPOCH. We have recovered the linear dispersion relation for electron Bernstein waves by employing relatively low amplitude incoming waves.
