    Influence of Coupled Sidesticks on the Pilot Monitoring's Awareness During Flare

    Passive sidesticks have been used in modern fly-by-wire commercial airplanes since the late 1980s. These passive sidesticks typically do not feature a mechanical coupling between them, so the pilot’s and copilot’s sidesticks move independently. This characteristic disabled the pilot monitoring (PM) to perceive the control inputs of the pilot flying (PF). This can lead to problems of awareness in abnormal situations. The development of active inceptor technology made it possible to electronically couple two sidesticks emulating a mechanical coupling. This research focuses on the benefits of coupled sidesticks to the situation awareness of the PM. The final approach and landing scenario was considered for this study. Twelve pilots participated in the simulator experiment. Results suggest that the coupling between sidesticks, allowing the PM to perceive the PF’s inputs, can improve the PM’s situation awareness

    Correlation between magnetic and transport properties of phase separated La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3}

    The effect of low magnetic fields on the magnetic and electrical transport properties of polycrystalline samples of the phase separated compound La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} is studied. The results are interpreted in the framework of the field induced ferromagnetic fraction enlargement mechanism. A fraction expansion coefficient af, which relates the ferromagnetic fraction f with the applied field H, was obtained.     Equilibrium tuned by a magnetic field in phase separated manganite

    We present magnetic and transport measurements on La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 with y = 0.3, a manganite compound exhibiting intrinsic multiphase coexistence of sub-micrometric ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic charge ordered regions. Time relaxation effects between 60 and 120K, and the obtained magnetic and resistive viscosities, unveils the dynamic nature of the phase separated state. An experimental procedure based on the derivative of the time relaxation after the application and removal of a magnetic field enables the determination of the otherwise unreachable equilibrium state of the phase separated system. With this procedure the equilibrium phase fraction for zero field as a function of temperature is obtained. The presented results allow a correlation between the distance of the system to the equilibrium state and its relaxation behavior.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures.     Effects of Fe doping in La1/2Ca1/2MnO3

    The effect of Fe doping in the Mn site on the magnetic, transport and structural properties of polycrystalline La1/2Ca1/2MnO3 was studied. Doping with low Fe concentration (< 10%) strongly affects electrical transport and magnetization. Long range charge order is disrupted even for the lowest doping level studied (~2%). For Fe concentration up to 5% a ferromagnetic state develops at low temperature with metallic like conduction and thermal hysteresis. In this range, the Curie temperature decreases monotonously as a function of Fe doping. Insulating behavior and a sudden depression of the ferromagnetic state is observed by further Fe doping.Comment: 2 pages, presented at ICM2000, to appear in JMM

    Influence of Nd on the magnetic properties of Nd1-xCaxMnO3

    The role played by the Nd ions in the magnetic properties of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 is studied using static magnetization, neutron diffraction and high frequency (9.4-475GHz) Electron Spin Resonance. We show that the Nd ions are weakly coupled to the Mn ions via ferromagnetic exchange and are responsible for the peculiar ferromagnetic resonance observed in the FM phase of both compounds (ground state below 120K for x=0.3, high field state for x=0.5). We then use ESR to look for magnetic phase separation in the low field, CO phase of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3. We show that there is no trace of the FM phase imbedded in the CO phase, contrary to what is observed in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 or Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3.Comment: to be published in phys.Rev.B as a Rapid Com

    Low temperature irreversibility induced by thermal cycles on two prototypical phase separated manganites

    We have studied the effect of irreversibility induced by repeated thermal cycles on the electric transport and magnetization of polycrystalline samples of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.325Pr0.3Ca0.375MnO3. An increase of the resistivity and a decrease of the magnetization at different temperature ranges after cycling is obtained in the temperature range between 300 K and 30 K. Both compounds are known to exhibit intrinsic submicrometric coexistence of phases and undergo a sequence of phase transitions related to structural changes. Changes induced by thermal cycling can be partially inhibited by applying magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure. Our results suggest that the growth and coexistence of phases with different structures gives rise to microstructural tracks and strain accommodation, producing the observed irreversibility. Irrespective of the actual ground state of each compound, the effect of thermal cycling is towards an increase of the amount of the insulating phase in both compounds.Comment: to appear in Journal of Alloys and Compounds (2003

    Magnetoresistive memory in phase separated La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3}

    We have studied a non volatile memory effect in the mixed valent compound La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} induced by magnetic field (H). In a previous work [R.S. Freitas et al., Phys. Rev. B 65 (2002) 104403], it has been shown that the response of this system upon application of H strongly depends on the temperature range, related to three well differentiated regimes of phase separation occurring below 220 K. In this work we compare memory capabilities of the compound, determined following two different experimental procedures for applying H, namely zero field cooling and field cooling the sample. These results are analyzed and discussed within the scenario of phase separation.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Twisted Split Fermions

    The observed flavor structure of the standard model arises naturally in "split fermion" models which localize fermions at different places in an extra dimension. It has, until now, been assumed that the bulk masses for such fermions can be chosen to be flavor diagonal simultaneously at every point in the extra dimension, with all the flavor violation coming from the Yukawa couplings to the Higgs. We consider the more natural possibility in which the bulk masses cannot be simultaneously diagonalized, that is, that they are twisted in flavor space. We show that, in general, this does not disturb the natural generation of hierarchies in the flavor parameters. Moreover, it is conceivable that all the flavor mixing and CP-violation in the standard model may come only from twisting, with the five-dimensional Yukawa couplings taken to be universal.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

    Scaling Properties of Antiferromagnetic Transition in Coupled Spin Ladder Systems Doped with Nonmagnetic Impurities

    We study effects of interladder coupling on critical magnetic properties of spin ladder systems doped with small concentrations of nonmagnetic impurities, using the scaling theory together with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. Scaling properties in a wide region in the parameter space of the impurity concentration x and the interladder coupling are governed by the quantum critical point (QCP) of the undoped system for the transition between antiferromagnetically ordered and spin-gapped phases. This multi-dimensional and strong-coupling region has characteristic power-law dependences on x for magnetic properties such as the N\'eel temperature. The relevance of this criticality for understanding experimental results of ladder compounds is stressed.Comment: 4 pages LaTeX including 3 PS figure
