    Listening to Emerson's "England" at Clinton Hall, 22 January 1850

    Ralph Waldo Emerson's delivery of his essay “England” at Manhattan’s Clinton Hall on 22 January 1850 was one of the highest-profile of his performance career. He had recently returned from his triumphant British speaking tour with a radically revised view of transatlantic relations. In a New York still in shock from the Anglophobic urban riots of the previous winter, media observers were prepared to find a great deal of symbolism in both Emerson's new message and his idiosyncratic style of performance. This essay provides a detailed account of the context, delivery and conflicting newspaper readings of this Emerson appearance. Considering the lecture circuit as part of broader performance culture and debates over Anglo-American physicality and manners, it reveals how the press seized on both the “England” talk itself and aspects of Emerson's lecturing style as a means of shoring up civic order and Anglo-American kinship. I argue for a reexamination of the textual interchanges of nineteenth-century oratorical culture, and demonstrate how lecture reports reconnect us to forgotten means of listening through texts and discursive contests over the meaning of public speech

    A generalized characterization of algorithmic probability

    An a priori semimeasure (also known as "algorithmic probability" or "the Solomonoff prior" in the context of inductive inference) is defined as the transformation, by a given universal monotone Turing machine, of the uniform measure on the infinite strings. It is shown in this paper that the class of a priori semimeasures can equivalently be defined as the class of transformations, by all compatible universal monotone Turing machines, of any continuous computable measure in place of the uniform measure. Some consideration is given to possible implications for the prevalent association of algorithmic probability with certain foundational statistical principles

    The Results of Locomotion: Bayard Taylor and the Travel Lecture in Nineteenth-Century America

    During the mid-nineteenth century, appearances by returning travellers were a ubiquitous feature of the American popular lecture circuit. Attending such talks was one of the few means by which the majority of citizens acquired an insight into distant cultures. These ‘travel lectures’ became an idiom of an emerging mass entertainment culture, one of the period’s more under-appreciated and idiosyn- cratic cultural practices. Drawing upon a range of archival materials, this essay explores the scope of the phenomenon during the period 1840–70, and argues that these oratorical events represented interpretive performances or ‘dramas of appraisal’ through which performers brought reformist themes to the platform. Focusing on the career of the poet, writer and diplomat Bayard Taylor – the archetypal ‘travel lecturer’ of the period – it reveals the ways in which he used the form to advance a moral vision of mid-century American cosmopolitanism

    Quitting and labor turnover : microeconomic evidence and macroeconomic consequences

    Combining microeconomic evidence with macroeconomic theory, the authors present an integrated approach to wage and employment determination in an economy where firms pay above market"efficiency wages"to prevent trained workers from quitting. The model offers predictions about the behavior of formal employment, labor turnover, and segmentation in response to formal sector productivity shocks (including economic growth and tax reductions), changes in the desirability of self-employment (formal sector tax rates), and the cost of training a new worker. They use panel data from Mexican labor surveys to estimate the quit function derived fromthe model and the results support their view that transitions from formal salaried work to informal self-employment are quits rather than fires. (Quitting is positively related to the mean self-employment income and the probability of being rehired and negatively related to the mean formal salaried wage.)     Enhancement of charged macromolecule capture by nanopores in a salt gradient

    Nanopores spanning synthetic membranes have been used as key components in proof-of-principle nanofluidic applications, particularly those involving manipulation of biomolecules or sequencing of DNA. The only practical way of manipulating charged macromolecules near nanopores is through a voltage difference applied across the nanopore-spanning membrane. However, recent experiments have shown that salt concentration gradients applied across nanopores can also dramatically enhance charged particle capture from a low concentration reservoir of charged molecules at one end of the nanopore. This puzzling effect has hitherto eluded a physically consistent theoretical explanation. Here, we propose an electrokinetic mechanism of this enhanced capture that relies on the electrostatic potential near the pore mouth. For long pores with diameter much greater than the local screening length, we obtain accurate analytic expressions showing how salt gradients control the local conductivity which can lead to increased local electrostatic potentials and charged analyte capture rates. We also find that the attractive electrostatic potential may be balanced by an outward, repulsive electroosmotic flow (EOF) that can in certain cases conspire with the salt gradient to further enhance the analyte capture rate.Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figure

    Asymptotic safety with Majorana fermions and new large N equivalences

    Using Majorana fermions and elementary mesons we find new massless quantum field theories with weakly interacting ultraviolet fixed points. We also find new classes of large N equivalences among SU, SO, and Sp gauge theories with different types of matter fields and Yukawa interactions. Results include a triality of asymptotically safe theories and dualities between asymptotically free matter-gauge theories with identical fixed points, phase diagrams, and scaling exponents. Implications for conformal field theory and orbifold reductions are indicated
