    Extending the Synoptics of Things (SoT) Framework to Manage ISoS Technology Landscapes

    Managing and monitoring the software and hardware artifacts of an industrial organization are fundamental efforts that can often be challenging endeavors to achieve, especially when such technological landscapes are composed of multiple heterogeneous systems. Usually, Internet of Things (IoT) devices are provided by different suppliers and may use different protocols and interfaces. Thus, the integration of these devices results in complex development and maintenance cycles. The Synoptics of Things (SoT) framework can address these problems, in conjunction with the Informatics System of Systems (ISoS) platform by promoting an open market competitive tech nology landscape for organizations. The purpose of the research presented in this paper was to extend the SoT framework in order to manage and monitor the different elements of an ISoS enabled organization, namely the ISystems (Informatics Systems), CES (Cooperation Enabled Services), and Services. We argue that the SoT framework can be essential in a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system in today’s modern web, by adopting the concept of Web Components as a standard to enable the development of custom and reusable components. We present and discuss such issues in the context of the HORUS system, an informatic system responsible for payment enforcement in fueling stations.     Mimo : a non-pharmacological comforting solution for preterm neonates

    Preterm neonates often suffer from pain, distress and discomfort during the first weeks of their lives. While residing in special Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) that are designed for optimal care, they are subject to numerous interventions ranging from a simple diaper change to surgery. Although pharmacological pain treatment often is available, it cannot always be applied to relieve a neonate from pain or discomfort. Therefore, new non-pharmacological solutions are required to reduce the discomfort experienced by these babies during the first weeks of their lives. This paper describes a novel solution, called Mimo, that provides comfort through mediation of a parent’s physiological features to the distressed neonate. We discuss the design and the implementation and pilot-evaluation of a first prototype. Results show that the concept is promising enough to pursue a full-scale clinical trial

    Oxidative Stress Is Associated with Overgrowth in Drosophila l(3)mbt Mutant Imaginal Discs

    The loss-of-function conditions for an l(3)malignant brain tumour (l(3)mbt) in larvae reared at 29 degrees C results in malignant brain tumours and hyperplastic imaginal discs. Unlike the former that have been extensively characterised, little is known about the latter. Here we report the results of a study of the hyperplastic l(3)mbt mutant wing imaginal discs. We identify the l(3)mbt wing disc tumour transcriptome and find it to include genes involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism. Furthermore, we show the presence of oxidative stress in l(3)mbt hyperplastic discs, even in apoptosis-blocked conditions, but not in l(3)mbt brain tumours. We also find that chemically blocking oxidative stress in l(3)mbt wing discs reduces the incidence of wing disc overgrowths. Our results reveal the involvement of oxidative stress in l(3)mbt wing discs hyperplastic growth

    Mimo pillow : an intelligent cushion designed with maternal heart beat vibrations for comforting newborn infants

    Premature infants are subject to numerous interventions ranging from a simple diaper change to surgery while residing in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). These neonates often suffer from pain, distress and discomfort during the first weeks of their lives. Although pharmacological pain treatment often is available, it cannot always be applied to relieve a neonate from pain or discomfort. This paper describes a non-pharmacological solution, called Mimo, which provides comfort through mediation of a parent's physiological features to the distressed neonate via an intelligent pillow system embedded with sensing and actuating functions. We present the design, the implementation and the evaluation of the prototype. Clinical tests at Máxima Medical Centre in the Netherlands show that among the 9 of 10 infants who showed discomfort following diaper change, a shorter recovery time to baseline Skin Conductance Analgesimeter (SCA) values could be measured when the maternal heartbeat vibration in the Mimo was switched on and in 7 of these 10 a shorter crying time was measure

    Inhibition of dye-coupling in Patella (mollusca) embryos by microinjection of antiserum against Nephrops (arthropoda) gap junctions

    Antiserum raised against Nephrops gap junctions was injected into single cells of the 2-, 4-, 8-, 16-, and 32-cell stage of the Patella vulgata embryos. The pattern of junctional communication by iontophoresis of Lucifer Yellow CH was tested at the 32-cell stage. The results show that the normal pattern of dye-coupling at the 32-cell stage is disrupted in greater than 65% of embryos previously injected with antisera. In contrast, less than 15% of embryos injected with preimmune serum exhibited disrupted patterns of dye-coupling. Up to the late 32-cell stage no effect of the antiserum on the pattern of cleavage was detected. This antiserum may provide a powerful tool to investigate the role of junctional communication in later stages of development of Patella embryos
