    Bottom-Up Approach to Moduli Dynamics in Heavy Gravitino Scenario : Superpotential, Soft Terms and Sparticle Mass Spectrum

    The physics of moduli fields is examined in the scenario where the gravitino is relatively heavy with mass of order 10 TeV, which is favored in view of the severe gravitino problem. The form of the moduli superpotential is shown to be determined, if one imposes a phenomenological requirement that no physical CP phase arise in gaugino masses from conformal anomaly mediation. This bottom-up approach allows only two types of superpotential, each of which can have its origins in a fundamental underlying theory such as superstring. One superpotential is the sum of an exponential and a constant, which is identical to that obtained by Kachru et al (KKLT), and the other is the racetrack superpotential with two exponentials. The general form of soft supersymmetry breaking masses is derived, and the pattern of the superparticle mass spectrum in the minimal supersymmetric standard model is discussed with the KKLT-type superpotential. It is shown that the moduli mediation and the anomaly mediation make comparable contributions to the soft masses. At the weak scale, the gaugino masses are rather degenerate compared to the minimal supergravity, which bring characteristic features on the superparticle masses. In particular, the lightest neutralino, which often constitutes the lightest superparticle and thus a dark matter candidate, is a considerable admixture of gauginos and higgsinos. We also find a small mass hierarchy among the moduli, gravitino, and superpartners of the standard-model fields.     Phaseâ amplitude coupling between interictal highâ frequency activity and slow waves in epilepsy surgery

    ObjectiveWe hypothesized that the modulation index (MI), a summary measure of the strength of phaseâ amplitude coupling between highâ frequency activity (>150 Hz) and the phase of slow waves (3â 4 Hz), would serve as a useful interictal biomarker for epilepsy presurgical evaluation.MethodsWe investigated 123 patients who underwent focal cortical resection following extraoperative electrocorticography recording and had at least 1 year of postoperative followâ up. We examined whether consideration of MI would improve the prediction of postoperative seizure outcome. MI was measured at each intracranial electrode site during interictal slowâ wave sleep. We compared the accuracy of prediction of patients achieving International League Against Epilepsy class 1 outcome between the full multivariate logistic regression model incorporating MI in addition to conventional clinical, seizure onset zone (SOZ), and neuroimaging variables, and the reduced logistic regression model incorporating all variables other than MI.ResultsNinety patients had class 1 outcome at the time of most recent followâ up (mean followâ up = 5.7 years). The full model had a noteworthy outcome predictive ability, as reflected by regression model fit R2 of 0.409 and area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic plot of 0.838. Incomplete resection of SOZ (P < 0.001), larger number of antiepileptic drugs at the time of surgery (P = 0.007), and larger MI in nonresected tissues relative to that in resected tissue (P = 0.020) were independently associated with a reduced probability of class 1 outcome. The reduced model had a lower predictive ability as reflected by R2 of 0.266 and AUC of 0.767. Anatomical variability in MI existed among nonepileptic electrode sites, defined as those unaffected by magnetic resonance imaging lesion, SOZ, or interictal spike discharges.     Large CP Violation in B_s Meson Mixing with EDM constraint in Supersymmetry

    Motivated by the recent measurement of the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry, we investigate anomalous CP violation in the B_s- bar{B}_s mixing within the supersymmetry. We show that when gluino diagrams dominate supersymmetry contributions, it is very difficult to realize a large B_s- bar{B}_s mixing phase under the constraint from electric dipole moments barring cancellations. This constraint can be ameliorated by supposing superparticles decoupled. In this limit, we find that it is possible to achieve the large CP asymmetry, and the branching ratio of B_s -> mu^+ mu^- tends to become sizable.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

    Quantum Mechanics of Dynamical Zero Mode in QCD1+1QCD_{1+1} on the Light-Cone

    Motivated by the work of Kalloniatis, Pauli and Pinsky, we consider the theory of light-cone quantized QCD1+1QCD_{1+1} on a spatial circle with periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions on the gluon and quark fields respectively. This approach is based on Discretized Light-Cone Quantization (DLCQ). We investigate the canonical structures of the theory. We show that the traditional light-cone gauge A=0A_- = 0 is not available and the zero mode (ZM) is a dynamical field, which might contribute to the vacuum structure nontrivially. We construct the full ground state of the system and obtain the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for ZM in a certain approximation.     Seizure localization using pre ictal phase-amplitude coupling in intracranial electroencephalography

    Understanding changes in brain rhythms provides useful information to predict the onset of a seizure and to localize its onset zone in epileptic patients. Brain rhythms dynamics in general, and phaseamplitude coupling in particular, are known to be drastically altered during epileptic seizures. However, the neural processes that take place before a seizure are not well understood. We analysed the phaseamplitude coupling dynamics of stereoelectroencephalography recordings (30 seizures, 5 patients) before and after seizure onset. Electrodes near the seizure onset zone showed higher phase-amplitude coupling. Immediately before the beginning of the seizure, phase-amplitude coupling dropped to values similar to the observed in electrodes far from the seizure onset zone.     Phenomenological Aspects of Gauge Mediation with Sequestered Supersymmetry Breaking in light of Dark Matter Detection

    In a recent work, a model of gauge mediation with sequestered supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking was proposed. In this model, the mass of the gravitino is O(100) GeV without causing the flavor-changing neutral-current problem. In contrast to traditional gauge mediation, the gravitino is not the lightest SUSY particle and the neutralino is the candidate of the dark matter. In this paper, we investigate phenomenological aspects of this model and discuss the possibility of the direct detection of the dark matter.     Probing High Reheating Temperature Scenarios at the LHC with Long-Lived Staus

    We investigate the possibility of probing high reheating temperature scenarios at the LHC, in supersymmetric models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle, and the stau is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. In such scenarios, the big-bang nucleosynthesis and the gravitino abundance give a severe upper bound on the gluino mass. We find that, if the reheating temperature is \sim 10^8 GeV or higher, the scenarios can be tested at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of O(1 fb^{-1}) at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV in most of the parameter space.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, minor modification

    The comparative anatomy of the folds, fossae, and adhesions around the duodenojejunal flexure in mammals

    Background: Anatomical knowledge of the duodenojejunal flexure is necessary for abdominal surgeries, and also important for physiologic studies about the duodenum. But little is known about the anatomy of this region in mammals. Here, we examined comparative anatomy to understand the anatomical formation of the duodenojejunal flexure in mammals. Materials and methods: The areas around the duonenojejunal flexure were ob­served in mouse, rat, dog, pig, and human, and the anatomical structures around the duodenojejunal junction in the animals were compared with those in human. Results: The superior and inferior duodenal folds, and the superior and inferior duodenal fossae were identified in all examined humans. In pig, the structures were not clearly identified because the duodenum strongly adhered to the retroperitoneum and to the mesocolon. In mouse, rat, and dog, only the plica duodenocolica, which is regarded as the animal counterpart of the superior duo­denal fold in human, was identified, and other folds or fossae were not observed, probably because the duodenum was not fixed to the parietal peritoneum in those animals. Transection of the plica duodenocolica could return the normally rotated intestine back to the state of non-rotation in rat. Conclusions: This study showed the anatomical similarities and dissimilarities of the duodenojejunal flexure among the mammals. Anatomical knowledge of the area is useful for duodenal and pancreatic surgeries, and for animal studies about the duodenum. (Folia Morphol 2018; 77, 2: 286–292

    Stau Kinks at the LHC

    The kink signature of charged tracks is predicted in some SUSY models, and it is very characteristic signal at collider experiments. We study the kink signature at LHC using two models, SUSY models with a gravitino LSP and a stau NLSP, and R-parity violating SUSY models with a stau (N)LSP. We find that a large number of kink events can be discovered in a wide range of the SUSY parameters, when the decay length is O(10-10^5)mm.     Congenital Plasmodium falciparum infection in neonates in Muheza District, Tanzania

    BACKGROUND\ud \ud Although recent reports on congenital malaria suggest that the incidence is increasing, it is difficult to determine whether the clinical disease is due to parasites acquired before delivery or as a result of contamination by maternal blood at birth. Understanding of the method of parasite acquisition is important for estimating the time incidence of congenital malaria and design of preventive measures. The aim of this study was to determine whether the first Plasmodium falciparum malaria disease in infants is due to same parasites present on the placenta at birth.\ud \ud METHODS\ud \ud Babies born to mothers with P. falciparum parasites on the placenta detected by PCR were followed up to two years and observed for malaria episodes. Paired placental and infant peripheral blood samples at first malaria episode within first three months of life were genotyped (msp2) to determine genetic relatedness. Selected amplifications from nested PCR were sequenced and compared between pairs.\ud \ud RESULTS\ud \ud Eighteen (19.1%) out of 95 infants who were followed up developed clinical malaria within the first three months of age. Eight pairs (60%) out of 14 pairs of sequenced placental and cord samples were genetically related while six (40%) were genetically unrelated. One pair (14.3%) out of seven pairs of sequenced placental and infants samples were genetically related. In addition, infants born from primigravidae mothers were more likely to be infected with P. falciparum (P < 0.001) as compared to infants from secundigravidae and multigravidae mothers during the two years of follow up. Infants from multigravidae mothers got the first P. falciparum infection earlier than those from secundigravidae and primigravidae mothers (RR = 1.43).\ud \ud CONCLUSION\ud \ud Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites present on the placenta as detected by PCR are more likely to result in clinical disease (congenital malaria) in the infant during the first three months of life. However, sequencing data seem to question the validity of this likelihood. Therefore, the relationship between placental parasites and first clinical disease need to be confirmed in larger studies
