    Monte-Carlo simulations of the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in domain growth processes

    Numerical simulations of various domain growth systems are reported, in order to compute the parameter describing the violation of fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) in aging phenomena. We compute two-times correlation and response functions and find that, as expected from the exact solution of a certain mean-field model (equivalent to the O(N) model in three dimensions, in the limit of N going to infinity), this parameter is equal to one (no violation of FDT) in the quasi-equilibrium regime (short separation of times), and zero in the aging regime.Comment: 5 pages, 5 eps figure

    An antibuckling fatigue test assembly is described for holding a metal specimen which is subjected to compression and to rapid cyclical heating and cooling while permitting visual observation. In an illustrative embodiment of this invention, the anti-buckling fatigue test apparatus includes first and second guide members between which the metal specimen is disposed and held, a heating assembly comprising a suitable heating source such as a quartz lamp and a reflecting assembly directing the heat onto the specimen, and a cooling assembly for directing a suitable cooling fluid such as air onto the specimen. The guide members each have a passage to permit the heat to be directed onto the specimen. An opening is provided in the reflecting assembly to permit visual inspection of that region of the specimen adjacent to the opening onto which the heat is directed

    A solar cell shingle was made of an array of solar cells on a lower portion of a substantially rectangular shingle substrate made of fiberglass cloth or the like. The solar cells may be encapsulated in flourinated ethylene propylene or some other weatherproof translucent or transparent encapsulant to form a combined electrical module and a roof shingle. The interconnected solar cells were connected to connectors at the edge of the substrate through a connection to a common electrical bus or busses. An overlap area was arranged to receive the overlap of a cooperating similar shingle so that the cell portion of the cooperating shingle may overlie the overlap area of the roof shingle. Accordingly, the same shingle serves the double function of an ordinary roof shingle which may be applied in the usual way and an array of cooperating solar cells from which electrical energy may be collected

    A sharp vanishing theorem for line bundles on K3 or Enriques surfaces

    Let LL be a line bundle on a K3 or Enriques surface. We give a vanishing theorem for H1(L)H^1(L) that, unlike most vanishing theorems, gives necessary and sufficient geometrical conditions for the vanishing. This result is essential in our study of Brill-Noether theory of curves on Enriques surfaces (reference [KL1]) and of Enriques-Fano threefolds (reference [KLM]).Comment: 4 pages, latex.     Dixmier traces and some applications to noncommutative geometry

    This is a survey of some recent advances in the theory of singular traces in which the authors have played some part and which were inspired by questions raised by the book of Alain Connes (Noncommutative Geometry, Academic Press 1994). There are some original proofs and ideas but most of the results have appeared elsewhere.
