A Toy Model for Gauge-Mediation in Intersecting Brane Models

We discuss the phenomenology of a toy intersecting brane model where supersymmetry is dynamically broken in an open string hidden sector and gauge-mediated to the visible sector. Scalar masses ~ TeV are easily realizable, and R-symmetry is broken. These ideas are easily generalizable to other intersecting brane models.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX, references added, some discussion clarifie

MOST Space Telescope Photometry of the 2010 January Transit of Extrasolar Planet HD80606b

We present observations of the full January 2010 transit of HD80606b from the Canadian microsatellite, Microvariability and Oscillations of Stars (MOST). By employing a space-based telescope, we monitor the entire transit thus limiting systematic errors that result from ground observations. We determine measurements for the planetary radius (R_{p}=0.987\pm0.061R_{Jup}) and inclination (i=89.283^{o}\pm0.024) by constraining our fits with the observed parameters of different groups. Our measured mid-transit time of 2455210.6449\pm0.0034 HJD is consistant with the 2010 Spitzer results and is 20 minutes earlier than predicted by groups who observed the June 2009 transit.Comment: 3 figure

DO ALL THE RESOURCE PROBLEMS IN THE WEST BEGIN IN THE EAST?

Economics can make good policy better and bad policy go away- a message often constrained by the political realities surrounding federal resource policy toward the West. This essay responds to these challenges to economic reasoning based on the lessons learned after a stay at the Council of Economic Advisers. My goal is to help make apolitical economists more effective advocates of efficiency.Agricultural and Food Policy,

    EXPERIMENTAL MARKETS AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Experimental markets can be a useful tool to guide and evaluate environmental policy. This paper reviews four experiments to illustrate. Two institutional experiments are considered-Coasian bargaining with positive transaction costs, and a gaming experiment of dynamic choice in a conflict. Two valuation experiments are also discussed-the impact of sequential reduction mechanisms on the value of risk, and experimental auction markets to elicit the value of safer food.Environmental Economics and Policy,

When Does a Mixture of Products Contain a Product of Mixtures?

We derive relations between theoretical properties of restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs), popular machine learning models which form the building blocks of deep learning models, and several natural notions from discrete mathematics and convex geometry. We give implications and equivalences relating RBM-representable probability distributions, perfectly reconstructible inputs, Hamming modes, zonotopes and zonosets, point configurations in hyperplane arrangements, linear threshold codes, and multi-covering numbers of hypercubes. As a motivating application, we prove results on the relative representational power of mixtures of product distributions and products of mixtures of pairs of product distributions (RBMs) that formally justify widely held intuitions about distributed representations. In particular, we show that a mixture of products requiring an exponentially larger number of parameters is needed to represent the probability distributions which can be obtained as products of mixtures.Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    Hyperbolic groups acting improperly

In this paper we study hyperbolic groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes. The first main result (Theorem A) is a structural result about the Sageev construction, in which we relate quasi-convexity of hyperplane stabilizers with quasi-convexity of cell stabilizers. The second main result (Theorem D) generalizes both Agol's theorem on cubulated hyperbolic groups and Wise's Quasi-convex Hierarchy Theorem.Comment: 52pp. In v3, some unnecessary assumptions are dropped from some technical results, especially in Section 5 and Corollary 6.5. The main results are unchanged, but the improved technical results are expected to be useful in future work. Several other small improvements to the exposition have been mad
