    Scaling Properties of Antiferromagnetic Transition in Coupled Spin Ladder Systems Doped with Nonmagnetic Impurities

    We study effects of interladder coupling on critical magnetic properties of spin ladder systems doped with small concentrations of nonmagnetic impurities, using the scaling theory together with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. Scaling properties in a wide region in the parameter space of the impurity concentration x and the interladder coupling are governed by the quantum critical point (QCP) of the undoped system for the transition between antiferromagnetically ordered and spin-gapped phases. This multi-dimensional and strong-coupling region has characteristic power-law dependences on x for magnetic properties such as the N\'eel temperature. The relevance of this criticality for understanding experimental results of ladder compounds is stressed.Comment: 4 pages LaTeX including 3 PS figure

    The free surface of superfluid 4He at zero temperature

    The structure and energetics of the free surface of superfluid 4^4He are studied using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. Extending a previous calculation by Vall\'es and Schmidt, which used the Green's function Monte Carlo method, we study the surface of liquid 4^4He within a slab geometry using a larger number of particles in the slab and an updated interatomic potential. The surface tension is accurately estimated from the energy of slabs of increasing surface density and its value is close to one of the two existing experimental values. Results for the density profiles allow for the calculation of the surface width which shows an overall agreement with recent experimental data. The dependence on the transverse direction to the surface of other properties such as the two-body radial distribution function, structure factor, and one-body density matrix is also studied. The condensate fraction, extracted from the asymptotic behavior of the one-body density matrix, shows an unambiguous enhancement when approaching the surface.Comment: RevTex, 11 pages, accepted in Phys.     Cavitation of Electrons Bubbles in Liquid Helium Below saturation Pressure

    We have used a Hartree-type electron-helium potential together with a density functional description of liquid 4^4He and 3^3He to study the explosion of electron bubbles submitted to a negative pressure. The critical pressure at which bubbles explode has been determined as a function of temperature. It has been found that this critical pressure is very close to the pressure at which liquid helium becomes globally unstable in the presence of electrons. It is shown that at high temperatures the capillary model overestimates the critical pressures. We have checked that a commonly used and rather simple electron-helium interaction yields results very similar to those obtained using the more accurate Hartree-type interaction. We have estimated that the crossover temperature for thermal to quantum nucleation of electron bubbles is very low, of the order of 6 mK for 4^4He.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure

    Curvature effects on the surface thickness and tension at the free interface of 4^4He systems

    The thickness WW and the surface energy σA\sigma_A at the free interface of superfluid 4^4He are studied. Results of calculations carried out by using density functionals for cylindrical and spherical systems are presented in a unified way, including a comparison with the behavior of planar slabs. It is found that for large species WW is independent of the geometry. The obtained values of WW are compared with prior theoretical results and experimental data. Experimental data favor results evaluated by adopting finite range approaches. The behavior of σA\sigma_A and WσAW \sigma_A exhibit overshoots similar to that found previously for the central density, the trend of these observables towards their asymptotic values is examined.Comment: 35 pages, TeX, 5 figures, definitive versio

    Bond-Dilution-Induced Quantum Phase Transitions in Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

    Bond-dilution effects on the ground state of the square-lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, consisting of coupled bond-alternating chains, are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that, when the ground state of the non-diluted system is a non-magnetic state with a finite spin gap, a sufficiently weak bond dilution induces a disordered state with a mid gap in the original spin gap, and under a further stronger bond dilution an antiferromagnetic long-range order emerges. While the site-dilution-induced long-range order is induced by an infinitesimal concentration of dilution, there exists a finite critical concentration in the case of bond dilution. We argue that this essential difference is due to the occurrence of two types of effective interactions between induced magnetic moments in the case of bond dilution, and that the antiferromagnetic long-range-ordered phase does not appear until the magnitudes of the two interactions become comparable.Comment: 7 pages, 13 figure

    Structural and dynamical properties of superfluid helium: a density functional approach

    We present a novel density functional for liquid 4He, properly accounting for the static response function and the phonon-roton dispersion in the uniform liquid. The functional is used to study both structural and dynamical properties of superfluid helium in various geometries. The equilibrium properties of the free surface, droplets and films at zero temperature are calculated. Our predictions agree closely to the results of ab initio Monte Carlo calculations, when available. The introduction of a phenomenological velocity dependent interaction, which accounts for backflow effects, is discussed.     Advanced colorectal polyps with the molecular and morphological features of serrated polyps and adenomas: concept of a ‘fusion’ pathway to colorectal cancer

METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty-two sessile serrated adenomas (SSA), 10 mixed polyps (MP), 15 traditional serrated adenomas (SA), 49 hyperplastic polyps (HP) and 84 adenomas were assessed for mutation of KRAS and BRAF and aberrant expression of p53. The findings were correlated with loss of expression of O-6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT). KRAS mutation occurred more frequently (26.5%) than BRAF mutation (4.8%) in adenomas (P < 0.001) and particularly in adenomas with villous architecture (50%). Loss of expression of MGMT correlated with KRAS mutation in small tubular adenomas (P < 0.04). BRAF mutation was frequent in HPs (67%) and SSAs (81%), while KRAS mutation was infrequent (4% and 3%, respectively). Of MPs and SAs, 72% had either BRAF or KRAS mutation. Aberrant expression of p53 was uncommon overall, but occurred more frequently in MPs and SAs (12%) than adenomas (1%) (P < 0.04) and there was concordant loss of expression of MGMT. CONCLUSIONS: Molecular alterations that are characteristic of the serrated pathway and adenoma–carcinoma sequence can co-occur in a minority of advanced colorectal polyps that then show morphological features of both pathways. These lesions account for only 2% of colorectal polyps, but may be relatively aggressive

    A fresh look at the evolution and diversification of photochemical reaction centers

    In this review, I reexamine the origin and diversification of photochemical reaction centers based on the known phylogenetic relations of the core subunits, and with the aid of sequence and structural alignments. I show, for example, that the protein folds at the C-terminus of the D1 and D2 subunits of Photosystem II, which are essential for the coordination of the water-oxidizing complex, were already in place in the most ancestral Type II reaction center subunit. I then evaluate the evolution of reaction centers in the context of the rise and expansion of the different groups of bacteria based on recent large-scale phylogenetic analyses. I find that the Heliobacteriaceae family of Firmicutes appears to be the earliest branching of the known groups of phototrophic bacteria; however, the origin of photochemical reaction centers and chlorophyll synthesis cannot be placed in this group. Moreover, it becomes evident that the Acidobacteria and the Proteobacteria shared a more recent common phototrophic ancestor, and this is also likely for the Chloroflexi and the Cyanobacteria. Finally, I argue that the discrepancies among the phylogenies of the reaction center proteins, chlorophyll synthesis enzymes, and the species tree of bacteria are best explained if both types of photochemical reaction centers evolved before the diversification of the known phyla of phototrophic bacteria.     Probing helium interfaces with light scattering : from fluid mechanics to statistical physics

    We have investigated the formation of helium droplets in two physical situations. In the first one, droplets are atomised from superfluid or normal liquid by a fast helium vapour flow. In the second, droplets of normal liquid are formed inside porous glasses during the process of helium condensation. The context, aims, and results of these experiments are reviewed, with focus on the specificity of light scattering by helium. In particular, we discuss how, for different reasons, the closeness to unity of the index of refraction of helium allows in both cases to minimise the problem of multiple scattering and obtain results which it would not be possible to get using other fluids.Comment: 21 page
