Design and construction of a Cherenkov imager for charge measurement of nuclear cosmic rays
A proximity focusing Cherenkov imager called CHERCAM, has been built for the
charge measurement of nuclear cosmic rays with the CREAM instrument. It
consists of a silica aerogel radiator plane across from a detector plane
equipped with 1,600 1" diameter photomultipliers. The two planes are separated
by a ring expansion gap. The Cherenkov light yield is proportional to the
charge squared of the incident particle. The expected relative light collection
accuracy is in the few percents range. It leads to an expected single element
separation over the range of nuclear charge Z of main interest 1 < Z < 26.
CHERCAM is designed to fly with the CREAM balloon experiment. The design of the
instrument and the implemented technical solutions allowing its safe operation
in high altitude conditions (radiations, low pressure, cold) are presented.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figure
Detection of occult carcinomatous diffusion in lymph nodes from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using real-time RTâPCR detection of cytokeratin 19 mRNA
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the occult lymph node carcinomatous diffusion in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). A total of 1328 lymph nodes from 31 patients treated between 2004 and 2005 were prospectively evaluated by routine haematoxylinâeosinâsafran (HES) staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and real-time Taqman reverseâtranscriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time RTâPCR) assay. Amplification of cytokeratin 19 (CK19) mRNA transcripts using real-time RTâPCR was used to quantify cervical micrometastatic burden. The cervical lymph node metastatic rates determined by routine HES staining and real-time RTâPCR assay were 16.3 and 36.0%, respectively (P<0.0001). A potential change in the nodal status was observed in 13 (42.0%) of the 31 patients and an atypical pattern of lymphatic spread was identified in four patients (12.9%). Moreover, CK19 mRNA expression values in histologically positive lymph nodes were significantly higher than those observed in histologically negative lymph nodes (P<0.0001). These results indicate that real-time RTâPCR assay for the detection of CK19 mRNA is a sensitive and reliable method for the detection of carcinomatous cells in lymph nodes. This type of method could be used to reassess lymph node status according to occult lymphatic spread in patients with HNSCC
Transition and Stability of Copolymer Adsorption Morphologies on the Surface of Carbon Nanotubes and Implications on Their Dispersion
In this study, the adsorption morphologies as well as stability and transitions of a commercial dispersant copolymer (BYK 9076) on the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied using Fourier transform infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and electron microscopy techniques. The results show that the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in ethanol does not increase continuously with increasing copolymer/CNT ratio, which is correlated with the adsorption morphologies of the copolymer on the CNT surface. At a ratio of copolymer/CNT below 0.5, the morphology is random, shifting to a hemimicelle structure at a ratio from 0.5 to 1.0 while at ratios above 1.0, a cylindrical pattern is seen. The hemimicelle morphology is able to prevent the agglomeration of CNTs when the CNT concentration increases to 8.7 mg/mL, while cylindrical morphology is more efficient and stable to provide dispersion of CNTs at higher concentrations of CNTs
Current strategies for treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration: substitution and regeneration possibilities
Background: Intervertebral disc degeneration has an annual worldwide socioeconomic impact masked as low back pain of over 70 billion euros. This disease has a high prevalence over the working age class, which raises the socioeconomic impact over the years. Acute physical trauma or prolonged intervertebral disc mistreatment triggers a biochemical negative tendency of catabolic-anabolic balance that progress to a chronic degeneration disease. Current biomedical treatments are not only ineffective in the long-run, but can also cause degeneration to spread to adjacent intervertebral discs. Regenerative strategies are desperately needed in the clinics, such as: minimal invasive nucleus pulposus or annulus fibrosus treatments, total disc replacement, and cartilaginous endplates decalcification.
Main Body: Herein, it is reviewed the state-of-the-art of intervertebral disc regeneration strategies from the perspective of cells, scaffolds, or constructs, including both popular and unique tissue engineering approaches. The premises for cell type and origin selection or even absence of cells is being explored. Choice of several raw materials and scaffold fabrication methods are evaluated. Extensive studies have been developed for fully regeneration of the annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus, together or separately, with a long set of different rationales already reported. Recent works show promising biomaterials and processing methods applied to intervertebral disc substitutive or regenerative strategies. Facing the abundance of studies presented in the literature aiming intervertebral disc regeneration it is interesting to observe how cartilaginous endplates have been extensively neglected, being this a major source of nutrients and water supply for the whole disc.
Conclusion: Severalinnovative avenues for tackling intervertebral disc degeneration are being reported Ăą from acellular to cellular approaches, but the cartilaginous endplates regeneration strategies remain unaddressed. Interestingly, patient-specific approaches show great promise in respecting patient anatomy and thus allow quicker translation to the clinics in the near future. The authors would like to acknowledge the support provided by the Portuguese

Barriers to Predicting the Mechanisms and Risk Factors of Non-Contact Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury
High incidences of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, frequent requirements for ACL reconstruction, and limited understanding of ACL mechanics have engendered considerable interest in quantifying the ACL loading mechanisms. Although some progress has been made to better understand non-contact ACL injuries, information on how and why non-contact ACL injuries occur is still largely unavailable. In other words, research is yet to yield consensus on injury mechanisms and risk factors. Biomechanics, video analysis, and related study approaches have elucidated to some extent how ACL injuries occur. However, these approaches are limited because they provide estimates, rather than precise measurements of knee - and more specifically ACL - kinematics at the time of injury. These study approaches are also limited in their inability to simultaneously capture many of the contributing factors to injury

Integrated Digital Image Correlation for the Identification of Mechanical Properties
International audienceDigital Image Correlation (DIC) is a powerful technique to provide full-field displacement measurements for mechanical tests of materials and structures. The displacement fields may be further processed as an entry for identification procedures giving access to parameters of constitutive laws. A new implementation of a Finite Element based Integrated Digital Image Correlation (I-DIC) method is presented, where the two stages (image correlation and mechanical identification) are coupled. This coupling allows one to minimize information losses, even in case of low signal-to-noise ratios. A case study for elastic properties of a composite material illustrates the approach, and highlights the accuracy of the results. Implementations on GPUs (using CUDA) leads to high speed performance while preserving the versatility of the methodology
