The Circumnuclear Ring of Ionized Gas in NGC3593

We present the results of narrow-band Halpha+NII imaging of the early-type spiral NGC3593 in combination with a study of the flux radial profiles of the NII (lambda: 654.80, 658.34 nm), Halpha, and SII (lambda: 671.65, 673.08 nm) emission lines along its major axis. The galaxy is known to contain two counterrotating stellar discs of different size and luminosity. We find that the Halpha emission mainly derives from a small central region of 57 arcsec x 25 arcsec. It consists of a filamentary pattern with a central ring. This has a diameter of about 17 arcsec (~ 0.6/h kpc) and it contributes about half of the total Halpha flux. The ring is interpreted as the result of the interaction between the acquired retrograde gas which later formed the smaller counterrotating stellar disc and the pre-existing prograde gas of the galaxy.Comment: Accepted for pubblication in Astronomy and Astrophysics; one latex file (corsini.tex), and 2 encapsulated postscript figures (corsini_fig1.ps,corsini_fig2.ps). Economic Methodology for Pasture Grass and Legume Seed Production

    Get PDF
The importance and complexity of the industrial process of seed production is known. Thus, conditions should be established for achieving and efficiently controlling the activity in order to know production costs, selling prices and to guarantee economic efficiency. The objective of this paper was to evaluate from an economic point of view, seed production of species of tropical grasses and legumes based on a preliminary methodology facilitating the control of the whole activity

The bulge-disk orthogonal decoupling in galaxies: NGC 4698 and NGC 4672

    Get PDF
We report the case of the geometrical and kinematical decoupling between the bulge and the disk of the Sa galaxy NGC 4698. The R-band isophotal map of this spiral shows that the bulge structure is elongated perpendicularly to the major axis of the disk. At the same time a central stellar velocity gradient is found along the major axis of the bulge. We also present the Sa NGC 4672 as good candidate of a spiral hosting a bulge and a disk orthogonally decoupled with respect to one other. This decoupling of the two fundamental components of a visible galaxy suggests that the disk could represent a second event in the history of early-type spirals.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures (LaTeX, cupconf.sty). Mixed Early and Late-Type Properties in the Bar of NGC 6221: Evidence for Evolution along the Hubble Sequence?

    Get PDF
Rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles are presented for both the stellar and gaseous components along five different position angles (P.A.=5, 50, 95, 125 and 155 degrees) of the nearby barred spiral NGC 6221. The observed kinematics extends out to about 80" from the nucleus. Narrow and broad-band imaging is also presented. The radial profiles of the fluxes ratio [NII]/Halpha reveal the presence of a ring-like structure of ionized gas, with a radius of about 9" and a deprojected circular velocity of about 280 km/s. The analysis of the dynamics of the bar indicates this ring is related to the presence of an inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) at 1.3 kpc. NGC6221 is found to exhibit intermediate properties between those of the early-type barred galaxies: the presence of a gaseous ring at an ILR, the bar edge located between the ILR's and the corotation radius beyond the steep rising portion of the rotation curve, the dust-lane pattern, and those of the late-type galaxies: an almost exponential surface brightness profile, the presence of Halpha regions along all the bar, the spiral-arm pattern. It is consistent with scenarios of bar-induced evolution from later to earlier-type galaxies.Comment: 1 File ds7406.tar.gz which contains: one latex file (ds7406.tex), and 10 encsulated postscript figures (ds7406f**.eps). The Use of Multivariate Analysis in Tropical Grass and Legume Seed Production in Cuban Regions

    Get PDF
Seed production is an important activity in developing countries where pastures are the main source for animal feeding (Febles et al. 2003). Another outstanding aspect is the mathematical analysis used when a large number of species, varieties and ecotypes are used in the same study. The objective of this paper was to examine the use of multivariate analysis in studies on the effects of edaphoclimatic factors on seed production from tropical grasses and legumes

Portable diagnostic platform for detection of microorganisms Coliforms and E. coli.

Portable diagnostic devices are a viable and low-cost alternative for the detection of pathogens, since they reduce the time of analysis of results availability. Ease of sample collection and quick diagnosis allow this new input to be applied in the diagnosis of the main contaminating microorganisms present in the water. Laboratory tests evaluated the technical viability of the diagnostic device, using commercial strains which were inoculated and optimized in the devices and their growth compared to the conventional method in Petri dishes. Samples of 100 μL bacterial suspension were tested and compared with the traditional sample inoculation method. The device viability was determined by detecting characteristic bacterial colonies in a specific culture medium through the colorimetric development of the obtained colonies. The feasibility assessments allow us to affirm that the device enables both qualitative and quantitative detection of the target bacteria present in liquid samples, and is promising to be applied to assess the quality of water, food and environmental surfaces

A NOVEL FUSION 5'AFF3/3'BCL2 ORIGINATED FROM A t(2;18)(Q11.2-Q21.33) TRANSLOCATION IN FOLLICULAR LYMPHOMA

    Get PDF
Follicular lymphoma is the second most frequent type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in adults. The basic molecular defect consists of the t(14;18)(q32;q21) translocation, juxtaposing the B-cell lymphoma protein 2 gene BCL2 to the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus IGH@, and leading to the antiapoptotic BCL2 protein overproduction. Variations in the t(14;18) are rare and can be classified into two categories: (i) simple variants, involving chromosomes 18 and 2, or 22, in which the fusion partner of BCL2 is the light-chain IGK@ or IGL@; (ii) complex variant translocations occurring among chromosomes 14, 18 and other chromosomes. We report a follicular lymphoma case showing BCL2 overexpression, detected by immunohistochemistry and real-time quantitative PCR, consequently to the formation of a novel fusion gene between the 5' of the lymphoid nuclear transcriptional activator gene AFF3 at 2q11.2, and the 3' of BCL2. This case shows evidence, for the first time, of BCL2 overexpression consequently to the fusion of BCL2 to a non-IG partner locus

Impact of the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals on Neglected Tropical Diseases

    Get PDF
Vector-borne diseases and infectious diseases in, general, affect the health of human and animal populations. By implementing the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in neglected populations, the level of living conditions is improved thus providing better housing, improving environments in cities and other populated sites, and developing better sanitary infrastructures altogether leading to higher-quality health conditions for the said populations. Transdisciplinary approaches can make successful implementation of the SDGs to tackle simultaneously the preservation and improvement of the environment, monitoring the health of human and animal populations, and studying in-depth those interactions in nature; those components are included in the One Health approach. Non-medicalized approaches can impact the roots of health problems, reducing the vulnerability of populations to disease, poverty, and malnutrition. Different initiatives of the SDGs can be effective in educating neglected populations to prevent exposure to vector arthropods, infectious agents, and undesired encounters with snakes and their disabling and life-threatening toxins. It will be important to actualize the implementation of the SDGs as a global strategy while also prioritizing each component

The Bulge-Disk Orthogonal Decoupling in Galaxies: NGC 4698

    Get PDF
The R-band isophotal map of the Sa galaxy NGC 4698 shows that the inner region of the bulge structure is elongated perpendicularly to the major axis of the disk, this is also true for the outer parts of the bulge if a parametric photometric decomposition is adopted. At the same time the stellar component is characterized by an inner velocity gradient and a central zero-velocity plateau along the minor and major axis of the disk respectively. This remarkable geometric and kinematic decoupling suggests that a second event occurred in the formation history of this galaxy.Comment: 12 pages, LaTex, with 4 PostScript figures.
