Tire abrasion particles negatively affect plant growth even at low concentrations and alter soil biogeochemical cycling
Tire particles (TPs) are a major source of microplastic on land, and considering their chemical composition, they represent a potential hazard for the terrestrial environment. We studied the effects of TPs at environmentally relevant concentrations along a wide concentration gradient (0–160 mg g−1) and tested the effects on plant growth, soil pH and the key ecosystem process of litter decomposition and soil respiration. The addition of TPs negatively affected shoot and root growth already at low concentrations. Tea litter decomposition slightly increased with lower additions of TPs but decreased later on. Soil pH increased until a TP concentration of 80 mg g−1 and leveled off afterwards. Soil respiration clearly increased with increasing concentration of added TPs. Plant growth was likely reduced with starting contamination and stopped when contamination reached a certain level in the soil. The presence of TPs altered a number of biogeochemical soil parameters that can have further effects on plant performance. Considering the quantities of yearly produced TPs, their persistence, and toxic potential, we assume that these particles will eventually have a significant impact on terrestrial ecosystems
A modified surgical approach to women with obstetric anal sphincter tears by separate suturing of external and internal anal sphincter. A modified approach to obstetric anal sphincter injury

Abstract

Background

Long-term results after obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) are poor. We aimed to improve the long-term outcome after OASI by lessening symptoms of anal incontinence.

Methods

In a prospective study at Malmö University Hospital, twenty-six women with at least grade 3B OASI were classified and sutured in a systematic way, including separate suturing of the internal and external sphincter muscles with monofilament absorbable sutures. The principal outcome assessed by answers given to six questions, was a difference in anal incontinence score, between the study group and two control groups (women with prior OASI [n = 180] and primiparous women delivered vaginally without a diagnose of OASI [n = 100]).

Results

An anal incontinence score of zero (i.e., no symptoms) was found in 74% of the study group, 47% of the OASI control group, and 66% of the vaginal control group (<it>p </it>= 0.02 and 0.5, as compared to the study group).

Conclusions

A modified suturing technique was followed by significant improved one-year symptoms of anal incontinence as compared to historical cases.</p
Ten Misconceptions from the History of Analysis and Their Debunking
The widespread idea that infinitesimals were "eliminated" by the "great
triumvirate" of Cantor, Dedekind, and Weierstrass is refuted by an
uninterrupted chain of work on infinitesimal-enriched number systems. The
elimination claim is an oversimplification created by triumvirate followers,
who tend to view the history of analysis as a pre-ordained march toward the
radiant future of Weierstrassian epsilontics. In the present text, we document
distortions of the history of analysis stemming from the triumvirate ideology
of ontological minimalism, which identified the continuum with a single number
system. Such anachronistic distortions characterize the received interpretation
of Stevin, Leibniz, d'Alembert, Cauchy, and others.Comment: 46 pages, 4 figures; Foundations of Science (2012). arXiv admin note:

Abrasive waterjet turning of titanium alluminides
In this paper the effects of parameter settings of abrasive waterjet turning (AWJT) on the titanium aluminide alloy TNB-V5 are investigated. Three setting parameters are varied and verified on five levels with regard to the depth of cut dc, the volume removal rate (VRR) and the maximum height of profile Rz. Additionally, the relationship to the absolute and specific feed rate is analysed and the ranges of the setting parameters for the empirical models are defined. Regression analysis and experimental validation completed the model-based optimisation of the abrasive waterjet turning process on titanium aluminide TNB-V5
BAYESIAN DESIGN OF ACCELERATED LIFE TESTS 1
In this article we present the Bayesian decision theoretic setup for design of accelerated life tests. We review some of the key contributions to the Bayesian design of accelerated life tests. In so doing, we discuss approximate Bayesian designs based on linear Bayesian methods and Monte Carlo based methods. We consider computational issues regarding the evaluation of expectation and optimization steps in the solution of the decision problem and discuss some recent Monte Carlo approaches that can reduce the computational effort in the design problem
