Experimental Test of a New Equality: Measuring Heat Dissipation in an Optically Driven Colloidal System
Measurement of energy dissipation in small nonequilibrium systems is
generally a difficult task. Recently, Harada and Sasa [Phys.Rev.Lett. 95,
130602(2005)] derived an equality relating the energy dissipation rate to
experimentally accessible quantities in nonequilibrium steady states described
by the Langevin equation. Here, we show the first experimental test of this new
relation in an optically driven colloidal system. We find that this equality is
validated to a fairly good extent, thus the irreversible work of a small system
is estimated from readily obtainable quantities.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
An experimental test of the Jarzynski equality in a mechanical experiment
We have experimentally checked the Jarzynski equality and the Crooks relation
on the thermal fluctuations of a macroscopic mechanical oscillator in contact
with a heat reservoir. We found that, independently of the time scale and
amplitude of the driving force, both relations are satisfied. These results
give credit, at least in the case of Gaussian fluctuations, to the use of these
relations in biological and chemical systems to estimate the free energy
difference between two equilibrium states. An alternative method to estimate of
the free nergy difference in isothermal process is proposed too.Comment: submitted to Europhysics Letter
Work fluctuation theorems for harmonic oscillators
The work fluctuations of an oscillator in contact with a thermostat and
driven out of equilibrium by an external force are studied experimentally and
theoretically within the context of Fluctuation Theorems (FTs). The oscillator
dynamics is modeled by a second order Langevin equation. Both the transient and
stationary state fluctuation theorems hold and the finite time corrections are
very different from those of a first order Langevin equation. The periodic
forcing of the oscillator is also studied; it presents new and unexpected short
time convergences. Analytical expressions are given in all cases
Probability distributions of the work in the 2D-Ising model
Probability distributions of the magnetic work are computed for the 2D Ising
model by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The system is first prepared at
equilibrium for three temperatures below, at and above the critical point. A
magnetic field is then applied and grown linearly at different rates.
Probability distributions of the work are stored and free energy differences
computed using the Jarzynski equality. Consistency is checked and the dynamics
of the system is analyzed. Free energies and dissipated works are reproduced
with simple models. The critical exponent is estimated in an usual
manner.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. Comments are welcom
Fluctuation theorems for harmonic oscillators
We study experimentally the thermal fluctuations of energy input and
dissipation in a harmonic oscillator driven out of equilibrium, and search for
Fluctuation Relations. We study transient evolution from the equilibrium state,
together with non equilibrium steady states. Fluctuations Relations are
obtained experimentally for both the work and the heat, for the stationary and
transient evolutions. A Stationary State Fluctuation Theorem is verified for
the two time prescriptions of the torque. But a Transient Fluctuation Theorem
is satisfied for the work given to the system but not for the heat dissipated
by the system in the case of linear forcing. Experimental observations on the
statistical and dynamical properties of the fluctuation of the angle, we derive
analytical expressions for the probability density function of the work and the
heat. We obtain for the first time an analytic expression of the probability
density function of the heat. Agreement between experiments and our modeling is
excellent
Estimate of the free energy difference in mechanical systems from work fluctuations: experiments and models
The work fluctuations of an oscillator in contact with a heat reservoir and
driven out of equilibrium by an external force are studied experimentally. The
oscillator dynamics is modeled by a Langevin equation. We find both
experimentally and theoretically that, if the driving force does not change the
equilibrium properties of the thermal fluctuations of this mechanical system,
the free energy difference between two equilibrium states can be
exactly computed using the Jarzynski equality (JE) and the Crooks relation (CR)
\cite{jarzynski1, crooks1, jarzynski2}, independently of the time scale and
amplitude of the driving force. The applicability limits for the JE and CR at
very large driving forces are discussed. Finally, when the work fluctuations
are Gaussian, we propose an alternative empirical method to compute
which can be safely applied, even in cases where the JE and CR might not hold.
The results of this paper are useful to compute in complex systems
such as the biological ones.Comment: submitted to Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and experimen
Thermodynamic time asymmetry in nonequilibrium fluctuations
We here present the complete analysis of experiments on driven Brownian
motion and electric noise in a circuit, showing that thermodynamic entropy
production can be related to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in the
statistical description of these nonequilibrium systems. The symmetry breaking
can be expressed in terms of dynamical entropies per unit time, one for the
forward process and the other for the time-reversed process. These entropies
per unit time characterize dynamical randomness, i.e., temporal disorder, in
time series of the nonequilibrium fluctuations. Their difference gives the
well-known thermodynamic entropy production, which thus finds its origin in the
time asymmetry of dynamical randomness, alias temporal disorder, in systems
driven out of equilibrium.Comment: to be published in : Journal of Statistical Mechanics: theory and

Non-equilibrium work relations
This is a brief review of recently derived relations describing the behaviour
of systems far from equilibrium. They include the Fluctuation Theorem,
Jarzynski's and Crooks' equalities, and an extended form of the Second
Principle for general steady states. They are very general and their proofs
are, in most cases, disconcertingly simple.Comment: Brief Summer School Lecture Note
Path-integral analysis of fluctuation theorems for general Langevin processes
We examine classical, transient fluctuation theorems within the unifying
framework of Langevin dynamics. We explicitly distinguish between the effects
of non-conservative forces that violate detailed balance, and non-autonomous
dynamics arising from the variation of an external parameter. When both these
sources of nonequilibrium behavior are present, there naturally arise two
distinct fluctuation theorems.Comment: 24 pages, one figur
Thermal noise properties of two aging materials
In this lecture we review several aspects of the thermal noise properties in
two aging materials: a polymer and a colloidal glass.
The measurements have been performed after a quench for the polymer and
during the transition from a fluid-like to a solid-like state for the gel. Two
kind of noise has been measured: the electrical noise and the mechanical noise.
For both materials we have observed that the electric noise is characterized
by a strong intermittency, which induces a large violation of the Fluctuation
Dissipation Theorem (FDT) during the aging time, and may persist for several
hours at low frequency. The statistics of these intermittent signals and their
dependance on the quench speed for the polymer or on sample concentration for
the gel are studied. The results are in a qualitative agreement with recent
models of aging, that predict an intermittent dynamics. For the mechanical
noise the results are unclear. In the polymer the mechanical thermal noise is
still intermittent whereas for the gel the violation of FDT, if it exists, is
extremely small.Comment: to be published in the Proceedings of the XIX Sitges Conference on
